Interesting to see the S-Class models side by side without the sport packages.
Mercedes started to take a turn from the W220 onwards.
The W220 through the W223 are almost related in that they are one code number apart.

The W140 was launched in 1991 (not 1993); the W221 in 2005 and W222 in 2013. Are these dates from US launches?

Yes, but some of the years are incorrect for the models and might be off by a year or so. The W140 might have arrived in 1991, probably as a 92 model here in US. Not 93. I found that photo from another website.

Just like the three chimnies of the Dolomites, to me there are three peak S class.
W108 (perfect Paul Bracq design)

W116 (in those days an engineering highlight and the first official S)

W222 (one of the most aesthetic modern day S class designs)

Something about pics of Euro cars from the 1960's and 1970's that delight me...

Strange that the W126 is a 500SE in 1989! In Europe, at least, the 500SE was discontinued in the mid 80s and was replaced by the 560SE. Maybe in the US there was a 500SE at that time?

No by 1989 we had the 560SEL (1986-1991) Not sure what market that video is from. The headlights on the W124 in the video are strange looking too.

Beyond that it is one of my favorites, as fresh on the outside as it is on the inside, an underrated design, but it is so modern...
In the video of a friend who bought this S55 AMG in Argentina, (begins by saying that he went crazy so he is aware of the possible problem he got into...he says that the hydropneumatic suspension (ABC), of this and all its S W220 counterparts is technology BOUGHT from Citroen, that's a big data I didn't know

^ Look at that lovely gear selector. Compared to the current plastic gear selector in the W223 it’s almost a jewel. Last time I had exact that gear selector was in the CLS W218. After that it went downhill with the W222.
Not to end in negativity, I loved that S class. After the facelift it was a perfect car!
