The only thing I really like with the GT over the Touring is the design of the dash. Admittedly very similar, but in the GT there's no separtaion between the HVAC controls and audio. When you have that coupled with that glossy black background, it looks like a high-end stereo. But is that enough to sway me? Not a chance. Touring all the way!

It's much harder than i thought it would be as there are many good things i love in the 5er GT, the interior is just great, the front is one of the best BMW ever made and the rest is very well sculted, sure the sum of it might not be that great but i will reserve my judgment until i see it IRL.

F11 is sleek, dynamic, sporty and BMW's best attempt yet at a touring, simply beautiful!

Though, 5 GT for me - more exclusive, more space, more practicality and more versatile with good ground clearance + SAV like etc. My money will but the GT:usa7uh:

Hard choice. I have yet to see the F11 but the GT I see on a daily basis and it is really growing on me.

The wagon by a huge margin. In fact I think the wagon looks even better than the sedan.

If the vanilla looks this sporty, imagine the M5 wagaon...

more exclusive,

In price maybe but not in terms of outright elegance. The concept of elegance in a wagon shape completely eludes most South Africans so I can see where you're coming from. But, in my books the 5er Touring is far more elegant and thus exclusive, compared with the fastback* 5er GT.

*Fastback = 'ugh' for anyone who grew up in the 80's.

more space,

Really? How so? In terms of rear legroom - is that what you're referring to? Because other than that, the mono-volume of the wagon will always be more capacious than a fastback shape.

more practicality

Because of what? The way the boot opens? Wagons are known for their practicality. Even BMW will point to the Touring as being the most practical car in the 5er range; the 5er GT is seen as more niche with specific concessions made toward luxury and not practicality.

and more versatile with good ground clearance

There is probably no quantifiable difference in ground clearance between the 5er GT and the F11. So there's definitely no difference in terms of versatility arising from ground clearance.

That's not even close, IMO. The only thing I like about the 5GT is the fact that you can get the same full width black panel instrument cluster the 7 series has. Other than that, not even close, but I might have said that already. :D

Best regards,
south

5er GT = 7er. 5er Touring is 5er. GT is more exclusive without question. Elegance is in the eye of the beholder and exclusivity is not, this is a fact.

Again, 5er GT is 7er size. It has a lot more interior room than the 5er Touring. Touring has a lot of space for baggage, the GT for people. GT is 7er with X5 headspace inside.

It's highly debatable which one is more practical. It totally depends on what you're planning to do. They are different cars after all. BMW doesn't make a 5er GT and 5er Touring and think it's the same car with a different shape. It's really not.

There is probably no quantifiable difference in ground clearance between the 5er GT and the F11. So there's definitely no difference in terms of versatility arising from ground clearance.

And still, the difference between the two cars is quite big. But I agree, ground clearance is not what's going to set these two cars apart.

In the end, 5er Touring F11 for me please! Without question. The best wagon design I have ever seen in my life, EVER.

And damn, 5er GT is getting raped by the Touring indeed! Poor car!!!!

Fantastic question. F11 or F07?

My answer: I refuse to answer until I experience the new 5GT in person.

On paper, it can prove the Touring worthless, but I doubt it's the same in real life.

First of all, the 5GT is supposed to look more special than the 5 Touring. I can't say if it's right or wrong until I see both cars IRL, but until then, the 5 Touring looks better in my book.

The comes the space issue. Is the cabin of the GT more spacious and comfortable than the 5 Touring? I guess the 4 seat configuration is nice to have in the GT, but not practical. I just fail to see, where the big difference between both cars in 5 sit config is. An inch more rear legroom, is not enough to choose the GT over the Touring.

What about practicality? The rear split-door boot is a nice idea, but the execution is far from perfect. It's very clever though. It's nice to have a big and a small opening for the truck, but the Touring has more space in the trunk, which proves the GT not enough in this category. A split boot, with the ability of opening the rear glass area individually for placing small stuff inside, would prove the total concept of the rear of the GT worthless.

So, apart from the looks, interior space and trunk practicality, what are the other reasons to buy a GT over the Touring model? I guess exclucivity and more comfortable character. Oh, the semi command driving position.

About the exclusivity factor, I have nothing to say. It's up to each individual's preferences. For what I am and where I live and work, the normal 5er is exclusive enough.

Regarding the semi-command driving position, well, in a normal car it's nice to have. I find the semi-command driving position of my Volvo, practical enough for everyday use of the car, but many times I miss the driving position of a friend's E46 320Ci. I'd love to sucrifise a bit of practicality for a great driving position.

Last is the character of the car. I haven't driven the car, I haven't even see it. But doesn't the new electronic dumpers in the 5er change the character of the car, from Volvo like boaty to classic-BMW stiff?

Well, it is a difficult question. As a matter of fact, I really can't decide yet.

The 5GT does have some awkward details, but it does also have some fantastic others. For instance, I love the agressive GT's face.

Need more time to dcide.

^^ Me too....now that I've seen the 5GT on the road. The new 5 wagon though is hands down the best looking wagon in the segment, at least going by pics so far.

Tough choice.

I see at least one 5 GT everyday and I dont like it. 5er Touring is the best looking car in the segment. Stunning car :icondrool

Last Friday saw a 5er GT and definetly don´t like th overall stance, so the 5er Touring all the way, is a very very nice car.

Easily the 5 series touring; its the best looking 5 series out there!
