Peugeot SR1 Hybrid Roadster Showcases New Design Language, Marks the end of Gaping-Mouth Grille Era

This here is the Peugeot SR1 hybrid 2+1 seater roadster concept that will be displayed for the first time at the upcoming 2010 Geneva Salon in March. The significance of the SR1 lies in its styling as the French automaker revealed that it foretells the stylistic design trends for its future models.

In short, this concept car showcases the firm's new design language that abandons the chunky shapes and the much criticized gaping-mouth grille of the current Peugeots in favor of more elegant and sharper looks that hark back to the Pininfarina-era Pugs.

The concept itself, which bears a passing resemblance to Aston Martin's Vantage V8, is a proposal for a low-slung roadster model with a hybrid powertrain.

The SR1's interior, is pure concept though we might see the driver-orientated center console making its way into Peugeot's future production models. The roadster can seat up to three in a 2+1 layout with the rear seat mounted centrally.

The roadster makes use of Peugeot's HYbrid4 technology, which will be available in the company's 3008 crossover from 2011. A front-mounted 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a power output of 218 bhp is combined with a rear electric motor developing 95 bhp.

When the two power trains work simultaneously, the SR1 develops a potential maximum power of 313bhp and also benefits from four-wheel drive.

Peugeot said that in electric only mode, the car becomes a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV), with a combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.9 lt/100km (48.0mpg US) and CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km.

The concept model also benefits from the adoption of 4-wheel steering with the turning angle of the rear wheels controlled as a function of the vehicle speed, via motorized links on the rear wishbones.

The car looks fantastic, both with and without the roof.

Ploue magic is immediate, finally finesse and real sense of style are back.

Some more on this new Pug and most of it deals with the end of the "wide-mouthed frog" styling theme and a pursuit of a new design direction centred on making the next generation of Peugeots more elegant.

This is the Peugeot SR1, a handsome hybrid three-seat roadster concept which showcases a new set of styling ideals to be used on all future Peugeots.

Although the car is officially described as a concept whose format was deliberately chosen to keep it clear of Peugeot’s existing line-up, group design director Jean-Pierre Ploue hints that the Peugeot SR1 could eventually be seen in showrooms itself.

But it’s SR1’s proportions and major exterior design features that really matter for the future, Ploue says: the precise shape and restrained size of the countersunk grille, the graceful proportions, the new sense of lightness of the car’s flanks, and the more sharply defined and simpler surfaces. These things, he promises, will be seen on tomorrow’s Peugeots.

The SR1's unveiling follows hard on the heels of a series of changes to PSA’s design management hierarchy.

Ploue, who impressed PSA group bosses by finding a new direction for the problematic Citroen brand, has been promoted to head of all PSA design, with Thierry Metroz, 46, replacing him at Citroen. The new Peugeot design boss is 36-year-old Gilles Vidal.

The new order doesn’t believe Peugeot needs the complete overhaul Citroen did, but that the current look has definitely progressed as far as it can go.

“We decided Peugeot needed an aesthetic car,” says Vidal, “ to show off its new trends and philosophies. Peugeot’s future will be about elegance and precision, so we thought it right to illustrate these things by making a classical GT car."

Looks like the child of a Aston and a Fisker

This concept makes sense since Ploue said a few months aho he didn´t like the current Peugeot design (with big moth and extremly agressive front-end), and said in future models the design would be more legant, ala old Peugeots.

Anyway I like the concept design, better than the current design theme.

i have the feeling that its a little overloaded with several different design themes which don't make the car look balanced. at least the design language is a lot better then the old one :)

Looks great. I hope this is an indication on what we could expect from Pug in the future. Like martinbo says, it shares a lot of design cues with the FT-86.

It's good to see signs that those big mouths all the recent Peugeots have, won't be continued. Yet, I recall an article that said that Peugeot is going to stop making hot-hatches and is concentrating on more upmarket sedan and coupes.

Looks very nice, well done job it is! Now the French car-makers can have an idea of that, their cars look better when they don't look French! :usa7uh:

French flair just got a new appeal! Looks good and the looong front overhang makes sense for the first time on a Pug:t-cheers:

The choice for Hybrid crazed Hollywood celebs are getting...sexy?:D

Peugeot

Peugeot is a French brand of automobiles owned by Stellantis. Founded in 1810, Peugeot is regarded as the oldest car company in the world. On 20 November 1858, Émile Peugeot applied for the lion trademark. Armand Peugeot (1849-1915) built the company's first car steam tricycle. They joined forces with Léon Serpollet in 1886; this was followed in 1890 by an internal combustion car with a Panhard-Daimler engine.
