I mention that Audi were working on performance diesels for quite a while but according to them the market wasn't ready for such machines, well all that changed with the release of the M550dx and now the program has been given to green light so watch this space.....

S6tdi anyone?

Worthless info without a source.

But they're bound to copy so you're probably right..

Where have you got this from? If Audi were working on performance diesels then surely Audi thought the market was ready so please give some more info.

Source of info added to first post. :usa7uh:

At the time I was originally told about their interest in a performance diesel (2yrs ago) it was just that with no solid info on engine capacities or outputs and this subject simmered away, never coming to a head and nor did it ever die either.

I can only imagine that it will follow a path similar to the M550dx in that it will have the same number of cylinders, capacity and probably mirror it's output but as yet I have nothing concrete to add.

Hahaha! I also heard these rumors before. I heard about an Audi DS4, not just S that stands for Sport, not RS that stands for RennSport, but DS that stands for DieselSport. However now I see a problem with "DS4" naming because it already belongs to Citroën.

Whatever, I find it really funny how "according to them the market wasn't ready for such machines". Is it ready now? The market is never ready, you have to create it. BMW had the balls to create it and Audi will follow. As usually.

^ Alas this is the advantage of having a smaller companies with less chiefs. BMW are more proactive where as VAG are more reactive.

I posted an article for the Q5 facelift were it mentioned a performance version using the 3.0 diesel. Don't know if it will carry a "S" badge or not,but it may serve as the first release for the new line. I wouldn't expect the U.S. to receive them though.

This will be the 313hp version that's been fitted to the A6, I heard that they were having issues with heat but that info was a while back.

The M550Dx might not be a proper M in the chassis department but it's still a slap in the face for Porsche with their half-arsed Panamera D. Competition will follow suit.

Always lead, never follow...

Someone always has to be first, on this occasion BMW took the lead which is great because it will make others follow and personally I think it's great to have S4 levels of performance with normal diesel levels of economy.

Especially for SUVs.

^ Twice the price here and £20k more than an X6M. It's the type of car for those who has everything and want to be unique and different.

Yap a friend of mine owns one and I think the V12 TDI is simply amazing and probably the only real exotic SUV at the moment :)

Yep..MB and Audi did the performance diesel thing before BMW that's for sure.:)

Not to this level, they haven't - not from 3 litres and 6 six cylinders. That V12 TDI is old hat by comparison. It's a big engine and its outputs are merely commensurate and hardly remarkable. Also hellish thirsty for a diesel.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
