Hi all

These two cars cost the same. The Panamera is more exclusive and has all wheel drive. But the M5 is just manic and loaded with standard kit.

Which one would you choose?

^you do realize that the man is asking for your pick of these 2 .. meaning that he must be past the looks of both cars, and could actually see owning BOTH of them?
So if you think its ugly has very little relevance here?

My choice remain the same.

It all comes down to what kind of person are you: do you buy cars for the love of the cars (M5), or buy cars to express your luxury lifestyle (Panamera). M5 is institution, it is THE performance sedan. Many have tried to copy it, but only one is the first and original. The King. On the other hand, Panamera is a lot more of a niche car, very unusual and different. Also very powerful in its stance (and very FUGLY). It's a 4 door Porsche, and that in itself says something about its uniqueness. It is one of those cars you buy to express your lifestyle (which is on the thin border of being ostentatious).

Personally, I would opt for the Panamera (albeit, Turbo S model only).

@JLBM

a) Why do you ask - are you considering a sporting saloon to replace or supplement existing vehicles?
b) What are looking to get from the ownership experience?

If this is merely posing the question as a result of another discussion held with mates then my contribution to the discussion would be:

BMW M5. Sure, it's a bit heavy now - but then nothing else in its class is a paragon of lightweight construction - but what ought one expect from a 5m long luxury saloon? For the rest of it, it actually is a special machine; it's got that M badge on it after all. The Panamera has lost a bit of character now that the naturally aspirated, sonorous V8 is gone. The V6 revs lower and is less characterful, I'm led to believe. And, in spite of the recent facelift and a not-too-shabby on road presence it still is the Hunchback of Notre Zuffenhausen. The M5 is a fantastic proponent of the Q-Car genre - it is recognisable only to the afficionado.

Then there's the V8 engine - bereft of ultimate melodic appeal due to the unique, sound-suppressing turbocharger arrangement (still miles better than a V6, mind) - with masses more oomph and across-the-rpm-range capability. Couple this with a great DCT transmssion, big fat brakes and M-fettled suspension and the M5 does look to be, overall, the more desirable machine. It's only in the cabin-finishings stakes that the Porsche is objectively superior.

Some guy owned both

M5 no doubt. Porsche is special but feels heavy. M5 drives better, more adjustable and better seats. Looks like a normal 5er I know but u forget that quickly once you floor it.

Panny is much wider on the road.

Thanks for the views guys.

@martinbo I definitely don't want to buy at the monent. But I long for the M5.. I'm starting to gather my thoughts for the next gen. Or the Boxster will go next ear for a current gen M5. But that would be irresponsible! :)

Hmmm. Your comments tell me the car you drove was optioned poorly. Better seats? Just so you know there are several seat options in the Panamera and the 18-way sport seats are the best I have sat in. Panny is more sportscarlike, M5 is just a fast saloon. Panny with PDCC and active steering feels half its size. I dont know about prices in the US, but why not RS7 or E63 AMG AWD (S)? From the choices you gave I would take the M5 if speed matters, Panny if luxury and sportscarlike handling is what you are looking for. Myself Id be looking at a GTS, RS7 or E/CLS63 AMG AWD... WOnderful cars ALL!

M5
You live in joburg, you don't need AWD with a 420hp car. The M5 looks better, has more kit and is in a different performance league. The Porsche is only more exclusive. You would need a good spec Panny turbo to compete with the M5 and that will cost a lot more than an M5.

You know, I spent a couple of hours driving the M5 in Joburg. It's brutal.

But I reckon it does need AWD. Flooring it from a standing start, it could never put the power down without ESP cutting it back, thereby reducing the acceleration and sense of fun.

Many feel this should be a RWD car, but the truth is they have become far too powerful to rely on the traction from one set of tyres alone.

I drove the Panny in V8 form a long time ago and whilst it truly is an amazing thing to drive it felt extremely wide compared to the 5 series, ok if your roads are equally wide but on our UK back roads it would be my least favourite choice.

Another thing, it's been a while since I looked at one but if you ever need five seats the Panny isn't for you.

I said that the 420hp car (panny) doesn't need AWD in Joburg, I didn't say anything about 560hp cars like the M5 and Turbo S ;)

The M5 will still be faster than the 4S from standstill even if it can only put 3/4 of the power down from launch. And there is no contest from a rolling start between the M5 and 4S. I repeat my vote for this poll, M5 over 4S!
