Origins for today's Genes : Autobild Imagines the BMW CS Hommage.

It's hard for them to go back to vertical grilles (as on the 328 hommage), with other brands making wide grilles that gives an aggressive/prominent stance.. a vertical grille doesn't work for a lot of people now but then I think for models that won't be high volume models, like the Z8 for example, why not give it a try? Maybe BMW can change the fashion again, who knows... i mean, BMW started a lot of modern designs, the basic stuff like having a clear piece of lens for headlights, character line(s), took advantage of LED lights for rear light graphics, iDrive etc. Of course risking it with a 3series is not the thing to do, but start off with something scarce won't hurt, at least all the rich die-hard fans would buy one. The 328 hommage is well loved by most actually from what i have heard, BMW fans or not. Also the F01 grille "can" go vertical, if it was made something like half an inch taller then it would be a "vertical" instead of "horizontal" already, and it works well. Trying something like this is a much much much better idea than the F20.

Honestly, very honestly, it's going to get boring if BMW doesn't so anything... i mean if the F20 is the best that they can do to evolution-ise the older designs, than seriously..:t-banghea (kill yourself?), i mean it doesn't take much for someone to determine the F20 is just plain ugly, that a E30 looks 100 times hotter. Yes every new BMW model is more refined and refined, the designs gets better and better but it's starting to give no surprises, everything is well anticipated, it's just too safe.

The BMW 1er City Compact uses classic entry BMW design cues from the original 1600. The i3 for example somewhat prologues the idea for the city compact and it's stacked headlights - Corona rings but instead of being twinned side by side you have the larger unit with the smaller stacked inside. It's all about giving the BMW FWD cars idenitity that they are still recognisable as BMW's and giving the customer something more exciting.
The BMW 1er City Compact will come in both 3dr and 5dr and it is really shaping up to be an interesting new BMW. Although it is Front wheel Drive it is very much a concept brought around BMW thinking and it will be very much the most exciting and dynamic FWD car in it's segment -It might seem alien. But It will be a BMW.

I like what you are describing and the avatar you briefly had seems to match your description. I am looking forward to seeing more of it.

A little unfinished looking since it's clearly a 1-Series with the new-fad "shark" surfacing with a retro-inspired front end tacked on, but with some little tweaks, and if this came to fruition, it would be incredible. This is the era of BMW I love, the 70's-90's era, with the lean, crisp surfacing, and distinctive front ends.

IMO BMW have it spot on with the rears of their more popular lines (I'm not gonna get into the 5 GT, et al), the F10, especially F01, and presumably F30 all have beautiful and characterized rear ends, whilst also being very simple and effortless/understated. However, I think BMW's have been a mess and very un-defined with their faces for a while now, like they can't find their stride. To me, you can almost read how difficult it is for them to incorporate the kidneys in evolutionary ways, especially now with the EU regulations (front ends look wall-flat, lots of empty flat surfaces, bulky, etc.).

If they went with this crisp, vertical kidney look again, at least on some models, I think they could revolutionize design trends again, as if it proves to have a presence on the roads (which it should, as now everyone's going wider and wider), then people will start to copy.

you realise you're part of a very small minority here right?
For the rest I pretty much agree :)

Interesting to bump this thread back up again as we will be talking about it on Friday.

So Friday was yesterday. Was "it" talked about? I guess I assumed "we" meant people on this forum, but that appears to not be the case.
