VW are launching the 2nd model in their new electric assault on the market, the ID4
2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Revealed:
VW shows the production version of the electric SUV. Two special models are coming to the premiere. We have all the information and pictures.
After numerous Erlkönig pictures and a first test drive in the pre-production vehicle, the curtain has now been raised and the ID.4 unveiled. The electric SUV follows the V W ID.3 in a relatively short time interval (in the test: "Drives well, fails in processing and electronics"), but is considerably more important for the brand than the compact electric vehicle. VW calls the ID.4 the "first global electric car of the brand" and with this claim makes it clear right from the start: failure is not intended, the Wolfsburg-based electric SUV must make its appearance right from the start.
Space like in the Tiguan Allspace
With an exterior length of 4.58 meters, the new VW ID.4 drives quite accurately in the middle between the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace, the width (without exterior mirrors) is 1,852 millimeters and the top reaches the end of the car at 1,612 millimeters. And one last number game: Despite the approximately 12 centimeters shorter external length, the ID.4 with a 2.77 meter wheelbase almost reaches the level of the Tiguan Allspace in this respect - the modular electric drive kit (MEB) with short overhangs makes it possible. The result is a lot of space in row two.
The design of the ID.4, with which VW would like to be successful worldwide, dispenses with futuristic adornments, but still makes the E-SUV recognizable as a modern Stromer at first glance. Above all, the smooth front, which looks like it is made of one piece, contributes to this, since a radiator grille is not necessary. The hatchback is not only designed with a large roof spoiler and transverse edges for visual reasons. The design is intended to optimize the flow separation and thus the air resistance of the ID.4, VW gives a drag coefficient of 0.28.
Limited special models at the start
While the ID.4 will start with several battery capacities and motor outputs of the MEB after the model family has been completely rolled out, sales in Germany will initially start with two edition models. The ID.4 1st and ID.4 1st Max differ in their equipment, the drive technology is identical. The variant with rear-wheel drive with a 150 kW motor (permanently excited synchronous machine) is used; the battery has a net capacity of 77 kWh (gross 82 kWh). The maximum torque of the electric motor is 310 Newton meters. The ID.4 completes the sprint from standstill to 100 km / h in 8.5 seconds and the maximum speed is limited to 160 km / h. VW specifies the maximum range in this configuration as 520 km.
The light becomes three-dimensional - at least with the ID.4 1st Max, which comes with 3D lighting as standard. Front means the new, "IQ-Light" christened LED matrix headlights with permanent high beam, which fades out oncoming road users and those driving ahead. The 3D taillights with their individual elements should have a particularly three-dimensional effect, the dynamic flashing light is also standard on the ID.4 1st Max. There are also two selectable designs for the dynamic welcome lighting that the ID.4 performs when unlocking and locking.
The interior with the basic design called "Open Space" is covered in the ID.4 1st Max with an extra-large panoramic glass roof. After the drive selector switch is located on the right behind the steering wheel, the free-standing center console does not house any controls, instead it houses plenty of storage space and two XL cup holders. The fully digital instrument is complemented by a large screen for the multimedia system, with the ID.4 1st Max with 12 inches diagonal, with the ID.4 1st with ten inches.
New operating concept without mechanical switches
There are no longer any mechanical switches and buttons in the cockpit of the new VW ID.4; instead, as in other VW models, all touch-sensitive buttons are used. In addition, the voice control called "Hello ID" is used to understand commands in everyday language. The ID.4 1st Max is accompanied by a head-up display with augmented reality technology in addition to the "ID light", an information light strip under the windshield with light effects for turning or braking. In this way, the displayed information, for example from the navigation system, is to be displayed particularly vividly in the environment.
The standard assistance systems in both edition models include an acoustic parking aid, Lane Keeping Assist, Emergency Brake Assist and distance control with traffic sign recognition (ACC Stop & Go). The system uses navigation data and accordingly reduces the speed in advance of certain driving situations (roundabouts, built-up areas). With the ID.4 1st Max, Travel Assist is also activated, with which not only the distance to the vehicle in front, but also the lane is automatically maintained.
Another equipment advantage of the ID.4 1st Max compared to the ID.4 1st is the adaptive DCC chassis with adjustable dampers. It is influenced by the drive program selection (Eco, Comfort or individual programming) and is networked with the XDS electronic differential lock via the vehicle dynamics manager. The ID.4 1st Max also has progressive steering, in which the gear ratio varies depending on the speed.
The recuperation of the ID.4 is preselected using the gear selector switch. As a standard in position D, the electric motor is "disengaged" in most situations in push mode and the ID.4 is sailing. Gear position B for "Brake" activates the forced recuperation in order to store electricity in the drive battery. DC charging at fast charging stations should be possible with a maximum of 125 kW. For charging at home, VW offers three different versions of the Wallbox ID.Charger, each with a maximum charging power of 11 kW. The cheapest ID.Charger version is already available for 388 euros (without assembly).

VW ID.4 - Sales start and prices
Just a few hours after the presentation, on September 24, 2020, according to VW, it should be possible to order the ID.4 models. The ID.4 1st comes with a base price of 49,950 euros (40,470 euros after funding), the almost fully equipped ID.4 1st Max is exactly 10,000 euros higher (59,950 euros list price, 50,470 euros after funding). VW not only wants to open the order books, but also want to start deliveries this year. This means that the ID.4 will hit the road ahead of the Skoda Enyaq , which is due to be delivered in 2021. The ID.4 1st models are "rationed" to a total of 27,000 copies; after they have been sold, preconfigured models follow with common equipment packages without customer-specific customization. That should speed up the production process.
CONCLUSION
After the debut of the ID.3, which in the test at auto motor und sport left mixed feelings with regard to the processing quality, the more expensive ID.4 as a future world model cannot afford to go wrong. The expectations are correspondingly high. By dispensing with individual configurations, VW wants to increase the speed of production and optimize the tiresome issue of delivery times for e-cars accordingly. That could be a hot e-fall.
