Well spotted. I didn't noticed. Perhaps VAG have conceded that it's the least touched part of an interior, as you would likely only touch HVAC buttons rather than the plastic surround. Either way, it's not an excuse. Interestingly, AutoBild docked off a few points for the Q5's quality because of the plastic driver side bin beneath the light switch.

Wait until you sit in the new XC60. Even the top dash is hard plastic and the glovebox door an utterly disgrace cost cutting measure.

In the Q7, the lower dash and HVAC surround is an inlay.

I just don't get it Luw. You touch the glove box lid far more than you touch the top of the dashboard. And you come into inadvertent contact with the transmission tunnel with your knees or hands often.

Like the GLCs interior or not, all of these areas are covered in spongy premium feeling plastics.

Now I'm very curious to go prod around the A4 again. Clearly Audi is ripping costs out of these cars for margins. The Q2 is atrocious overall and now the Q5 has plastics that you don't even see on an older generation A1.

Such a terrible thing to read that now Audi has also started to cut quality on its models. I was surprissed back in the day with the low quality of the F30 3er interior and then the base GLC (which is the same interior than the C) had some similar problems.

This simply discourages me to buy a mid-sized german car unless I have the money to go for the top spec versions.

I must be easy to please because I just don't get all the criticism about some interiors. I think some people are being overly fussy. I was in an A4 a few weeks ago and I thought it a great place to be. I didn't go around prodding every single piece of the interior like some demented car reviewer though.

This! Finally. Someone who thinks along the same lines I do.

From my perspective I always have to ask how much are people expecting in a certain package. There's give and take in every product's costing. No one's getting more out of less.

That being said, @Mr. Mercedes - thanks for sharing the enlightening and still surprising observation. I'm not certain if new Q5 is here yet - it ought to be very soon as our market largely tracks that of Australia for imported vehicles - but when it does arrive I will be sure to check it out soonest.

Audi South Africa seem to be battling to shift the old Q5. Their offer - buy one now and only start paying for it in March 2018! Or get R100,000 trade in assistance..

@Betty Swollocks and @martinbo, perhaps my expectations are unrealistic but there is certainly a cheapening of material quality across the board with all the major German manufacturers. I guess they face no choice if they wish to improve margins while increasing technological sophistication and controlling price movements. Somethings got to give. We can't have it all.

What gets my goat though is clueless journalist commenting on material quality and comparing between the brands so inconsistently and unfairly. Audi time and time again gets away with cheapening interiors without being called up on it. They have truly mastered the art of initial perceived (should it read deceived?) quality and Mercedes is learning quickly too.

BTW...I admit I am overly fussy and hard to please.

^I don't think you're being too critical. At least, I'm the same way, too. Maybe it's because my automotive enthusiasm was ignited by all those 50s to early 80 classics in which practically only authentic materials were used. Aluminum was aluminum, chrome was chrome, leather was leather, and plastic was plastic ... you get the point. In the last decade, forms, shapes, and spectacle became more and more important (at least in interior design), attenuating the importance of materials, finish, and associated aspects. Entertainment electronics defined the baseline, furniture design as an inspiration went out of style.
I've heard it more than once: the look dictates the finish.
