The new A5/S5 presents some interesting opportunities for discussion - particularly from an exterior design perspective.
As we've seen with the a number of new Audi designs, as whole, the car comes across as little-evolved in its exterior styling over that of it predecessor and yet there is so much in the detail design work that can be appreciated. If the overall persona hasn't moved on that much then it's the finer details which once again give credence to Audi's own prowess on the design front.
Sure the front overhang is long - potentially there are as many as four cylinders in a row ahead of that front axle - but all things considered it's commendably short for what it is:
Take note (if you're so inclined) once more about the accuracy-of-fit of Audi's clamshell bonnet (hood) design and how beautifully it integrates with the sharper, more prominent sin-wave swage line. If still unimpressed then have a look at this image:
The sharpness of the surfacing continues on the bonnet where the creases are particularly bold and prominent. And, if the headlights do come across as conservative in shape, at least appreciate the bonnet shutline intersecting with the apex of the outer headlight corner. It's a pleasingly Germanic detail so typical of their penchant for smart, succinct style.
Another very interesting body panel detail is the 90 degree edge on the trailing end of the rear fender. It's a very unusual piece of surface treatment as, ordinarily, tail-lights and bumpers serve as the interface as the bodywork turns from side to rear surfaces. Here the fender itself is stamped with the corner (which then runs for presumably 1 to 1.5cm laterally) in-built into the sheetmetal and I feel that this is a visually engaging detail.
Another really cool detail is the black sill extending from under the rocker panel on the S5. This is a styling feature reserved more for upper-end sports cars and supercars.
So, whilst the new A5/S5 may not be overtly evolved from its forebear, there's little doubt that the attention to detail results in a car that looks beautifully made and effortlessly premium.
As such, to this punter at least, this can only be viewed as: job well done Audi.
