Seems to like everything except the price and the iPad. Which to be honest is fair enough. £20k off the top and I think it would be perfect.
At the moment it's just an alternative choice to other GTs.

is It just me, or does that flippy rear wing just look “wrong” when fully deployed?
I say fixed wing or nothing.

It comes with both.

But for the same price as the new Aston Martin Vantage, for me it's a no brainer. I would go for the Aston.
The facelift is a real stunner .

I'd go also for the Aston , even if I love the GT. The interior is pretty dull in comparison

And its alot more powerful. Own goal by benz. They got rid of its only USP, that long bonnet
Nobody would have bought one for the long bknnety anyway. As evidenced by the sales of the prior GT.

People forget that despite having a cult following online, the GT didn't actually sell particularly well. The 911 just ate it's lunch every time.

I quite enjoyed Harry's review and was surprised about his verdict. He didnt fault anything really about how the car drives and even said the suspension is comfortable over challenging roads, with sharp responsive steering that reminded him of a Ferrari but without been nervous. The car has bucket loads of character with that bonkers V8, sounds fantastic and the 9 speed auto he also enjoyed. The powertrain is one of the strengths of this car. The interior is the weakness. Actually it doesnt take much to fix, the major issues are the screen and the steering wheel spoke capacitive controls. If they fit a screen that could be a 12inch horizontal instead of vertical and fit a steering wheel with proper buttons on the spokes then this would be close to perfect.

I will note that the Aston's new looks and power came with a substantial price increase - it is more expensive than the AMG GT. In the U.S., the Vantage starts at a price over $15k more than the AMG GT 63. I personally don't think the Vantage looks better exterior wise personally, although I love the new interior.

It's also just a 2 seater and is far less practical as a daily driver, which is the original complaint of the GT.

I think it's a personal preference, as both look excellent from the outside. Interior wise, all MB has to do is get rid of that fugly screen and the interior becomes a high quality stunner.

Can't get over the weight though. Absolutely ridiculous and a big fail for a sportscar like this. I don't think it'll be that popular on the Ring, which the previous gen very much was.

This just demonstrates how dangerous it is to mindlessly follow what the customer wants. There is no car anyone has ever sat in that they wanted to be less comfortable, less practical or with less space inside. Literally none. Even if someone got into a Caterham, they sure wouldn't mind if it was more comfortable, more practical and had more space inside. Listen to this feedback and soon any sportscar becomes a bloated GT barge - same all the other ones.

This is also something that the 911 has been struggling with, but Porsche has only given in a little bit. MB, on the other hand, straight up deleted the AMG GT and instead gave us a replacement for the S-Coupe with AMG GT badging. Which, for all purposes, is just another SL anyway. Now, I am sure that this is great for all those that wanted a car like this, but where is the car for those that wanted an AMG GT?

The new AMG GT is far from a strict S-class coupe replacement, but I can appreciate the hyperbole because it's less focused than the previous-gen AMG GT. I doubt they were mindlessly following what the customer wants because they also have sales data and investment cost projections to compliment what they're learning.

The AMG GT was running on a platform inherited by the SLS which had reached end of life. The similarly priced G-wagen got to keep its bespoke platform because of its icon status and higher sales. MB clearly wanted to leverage a platform that could share parts with other Benzes throughout the lineup (less investment costs) and widen the potential appeal to buyers who did not want to deal with the cramped cabin and harsh ride of the previous generation.

Folks like you got left in the wind, and perhaps you won't ever accept the myriad special additions that will come out in the future. It's all a play for profit though, so if this + SL end up a better combo for MB then it was all worth it for them in the long run. You can say Porsche only gave in a little bit, but the 911 was more hospitable than the first gen AMG GT to start with.

It's not the same price though. The Aston is considerably more expensive in most markets. More than AUD$130k more than the esitimated price of a fully specced AMG GT.

That's what I am saying, you widen the appeal enough, and soon every car is an SUV. The previous gen did suffer from what you describe, but it's not like those were unfixable, or expensive to fix, problems.

That MB wants to save money by platform sharing is great, really great. I am sure that when the Daimler-Benz board heard all about this plan, it sounded like a dream. But, as customers, I think it's our job to shit all over that dream and make sure they don't get away with charging this much money for a non-unique experience. For their long term sake too - if you were inclined to care about such a thing.

Really, it's the price of the car that is the problem. If it was 60k cheaper, it's great. As for how it is now, I can't see how this is bought by anyone, with the exception of those who only have one dealer number on their phone, and it's their local MB dealer - where their legs carry them automatically any time they feel like buying the latest toy, and nothing but that. (No offense to anyone who does that... but, actually, yes, a big offense! The biggest! :bored: )

It seems as though it was too expensive to fix, from what I can see. There was no evolution of this platform to move to and given they didn't address the cockpit space/ride issues from the SLS it seems as though this was a platform limitation issue. There was always the strong rumor the SLS and Viper came from the same starting point and cockpit space and ride were critcisms they shared.

Shifting customer bases always cause complaints. I'm sure they're hoping the hotter versions recapture at least a few of you, but if they modeled things correctly they knew they were going to lose previous-gen customers from the get go.

As far as pricing is concerned, $60k cheaper is a nonstarter. That would be $117k for an AMG GT63. Cheaper than a BMW M8 or Audi RS6. That's just a nonstarter. $150k would make more sense imo.

All of this is well and good, but everyone who's driven the new GT seems to love it.

Not many people have complained about a loss in sporting character compared to the first generation of GT, and nobody has complained about it's increased compliance on bad pavements.
It's less extreme than the prior GT and SLS, and the worst complaint is of course the weight gain. But people have found it to be a better car overall.

If there are lighter, hotter variants coming in future, what's the harm in having a base model that's a bit softer and forgiving for people who don't want a raw sports car experience?

I suppose this is the perennial conundrum.
