Fortwo/Forfour [Official] Smart ForTwo & ForFour

The Smart Fortwo (stylized as "smart fortwo") is a two-seater city car manufactured and marketed by the Smart division of the Mercedes-Benz Group for model years 1998–2024, across three generations - each using a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a one-box design. The Smart Forfour (stylized as "smart forfour") is a city car (A-segment) marketed by Smart over two generations. The first generation was marketed in Europe from 2004 to 2006 with a front-engine configuration, sharing its platform with the Mitsubishi Colt.

Mercedes designs Smart car-based train

It seems like Toyota sent a case of whatever it was drinking last week over to Mercedes UK. In a development every bit as weird as the Lexus hoverboard, Mercedes has designed a Smart Forfour-based train. That's right, a four-seat Smart mini-train. It's called the Smart Forrail, and while no one's all too sure why it exists, it does. Or at least it did briefly.

The train and the Smart car exist at absolute opposite ends of the transportation spectrum. One is a large, powerful means of transporting the masses, the other one of the world's truly diminutive commuter cars built to efficiently wheel a well-acquainted quartet to and fro. There's really no reason we can think of why anyone would want a Smart car rolling on a set of train tracks – outside of creating a bit of novelty-based publicity, we suppose.

Publicity seems to be about all Mercedes really accomplished with the Forrail, and according to its account of the project, it didn't come easy. Mercedes and company actually spent six long, hard months on the Smart train, calling the conversion from car to train "incredibly difficult." We'll add "incredibly weird," with just a touch of "oddly intriguing."

Working with British train engineering specialist Interfleet, Mercedes-Benz UK went through a rigorous CAD modeling and engineering program to transform the four-seat Smart car into a functional mini-train. The most obvious aspect of the conversion is the set of 22-in (56-cm) solid steel wheels. Each wheel weighs 176 lb (80 kg) and gives the car the traction it needs to navigate the tracks. With wheels set on railroad tracks, the Forfour's steering is entirely unnecessary, so the team disabled the steering wheel and welded the front axles in place to prevent any unwanted wheel movement.

If you're going to go through that much trouble to build a Smart train, you damn well better see if it works. Mercedes and Interfleet tested the car-train out on a 10-mile (16-km) stretch of Bluebell Railway track through Sussex. Bluebell staff closely monitored the experiment, and the train "car" drove at low speeds, managing to complete testing without derailing.

It goes without saying that the Smart Forrail won't be pulling into a train station near you. In fact, that six months of intensive work has already been reversed with the vessel converted back to street form shortly after its track tests. Mercedes also dissuades other parties from trying a similar conversion, stressing the difficulty of the endeavor. Plus, why the heck would you want to?

Brabus-tweaked Smart ForFour spied with light camo in southern Europe
Could have up to 130 PS

A thinly camouflaged 2016 Smart ForFour by Brabus was spotted testing in Spain.

The cute pocket rocket seems to be sitting lower than the regular ForFour which indicates Brabus is implementing a sportier suspension along with enlarged brakes and a dual exhaust setup. The prototype had some camouflage on the front and rear bumpers which will look a tad more aggressive than the stock ones and there could also be some other body changes that aren't visible on this near-production prototype.

We are not entirely sure what will power the Brabus-optimized ForFour, but most likely it will be an uprated specification of the three-cylinder, 0.9-liter TCe turbocharged gasoline engine upgraded from the series 90 PS (66 kW) to somewhere in the region of 120 - 130 PS (88 - 96 kW).

The Renault Twingo is about to get the same array of enhancements for the upcoming GT version which could be showed in mid-September at IAA alongside the beefier ForTwo and ForFour duo.

The Smart microcar will continue to be a niche product in the U.S. with annual sales of about 10,000.

Management has chosen to sell only one car here -- the miniscule ForTwo and not the four-seat ForFour. There's concern there wouldn't be demand for a tiny four-seater.

ForTwo: The redesigned ForTwo two-door car goes on sale in November. The 106.1-inch length stays the same.

The ForTwo has a turbocharged, three-cylinder 898cc engine with 89 hp mated to either a five-speed manual or a new six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The new front axle was adapted from the new-generation Mercedes C-class sedan from parent Daimler.

The ForTwo will be freshened in 2018.

A plug-in electric version goes on sale in 2017.

Had a ForTwo for three days as a rental. Super fun in the city, nice spacious cockpit, pretty nice features (cruise control, sunroof), and of course very small and agile.

But my god, reverse picture as soon as you leave the city. The car becomes completely useless. Even on Italian roads with a speed limit of 130 km/h the Smart is out of its element. I had the small 71hp 1L I3 manual version. Very underpowered, you basically drive full throttle at all times. I lost speed at full throttle in the hills around Florence. This leads to a very noisy cockpit, loud engine, terrible gas mileage (I averaged 7.7L over 600 km), and very unpleasant experience. The short wheelbase completely beats you up. I was shocked how uncomfortable the mix of wheels, chassis and suspension was.

Overall a let down as I expected more of a useable car not a useless city hopper. I might as well buy a Vespa then. Although still shit, a Fiat Panda is a much nicer experience. I cannot imagine how terrible the first gen car must be.

^ Was it the new 453 model ?

Having the engine inside certainly doesn't help with the noise.
Yes, it was a brand new model with 4,500 km on the clock. I was curious about the new car that's why I picked it. On the plus side, I fit two regular sized suitcase in it plus a passenger and myself.

I had the last model about 6 years back and only kept it for a year / it could do 155km/h but was still not that much use on a highway.
