S-Class [Official] Mercedes-Maybach S600 (X222)

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse, is a series of full-sized luxury sedans and coupés produced by Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class is the designation for top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models and was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, and has remained in use ever since. The S-Class is the flagship vehicle for Mercedes-Benz, being positioned above the other Mercedes-Benz models.

Staff Picks Favorite Things We Saw at the Auto Show in Detroit

Bloomberg staffers covering the North American International Auto Show share their favorite things they saw at Cobo Center in Detroit.

* Hannah Elliott -- Car columnist for Bloomberg Luxury. Wrote about luxury cars for 8 years as a staff reporter at Forbes Magazine.

* FAVORITE THING I SAW: Mercedes-Maybach S600 sedan

* WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT: It’s as much about the driver as it is about the (very lucky) passenger: V-12 engine, 523 horsepower, 612 pound-feet of torque at 1,900 rpm, 0-60 mph in 5 seconds flat, plus a special Chauffeur Package footrest for longer trips on the road.

* BEST FEATURE: The Air Balance system, which filters, humidifies and scents the air inside the cabin. (The fragrance is a special strain of agarwood.)

* NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: Would love to see a more efficient diesel version of such a behemoth.

It would be great if Mercedes could bring out a 368kw (500PS)/1000nm twin turbo 4.0ltr V8 diesel engine for the S-Class and even the E-class, imagine an S400d/E400d. Would make the perfect engine for the Maybach as well.

maybach have to be extremely quiet and refined. A diesel won't be suitable

The latest 6 cylinder diesels are extremely quiet, every bit as quiet as an equivalent petrol engine. Only during cold start up will there maybe be some slight rattling but they produce a pleasant sound. The S350 BluTEC is the most popular model in Europe, so I think a V8 diesel will be even more a better choice as this will be much more refined than a V6 diesel.

Daimler expects only 2% of Maybach sales to come from Europe, though. A Europe only diesel may be in the pipeline. :)

Storp said it would take up to two years to adapt an existing product to meet Maybach standards although it would take half that time to put a new engine in the Maybach which is available in Europe with only V8 and V12 petrol power, raising the prospect of a diesel Maybach going sale in Europe within the year. I actually expected the price to be much more. I just knew it would be more expensive then the S65.

Depends on the country. In the UK the S 600 Maybach is cheaper than the S 65 AMG.

The standard S 600 L is £138,855, so at £165,700, the Maybach S 600 doesn't seem too expensive.

However, when you consider the S 500 L is £87,090, the Maybach is double the price for slightly more legroom and a bit of bling.

It also depends on the terrain and the traffic situation of the particular market. Say for most of the 1st & 2nd-tier Chinese cities and Singapore, the S400 Maybach will be perfect as there are no hills or steep terrains to climb.

Just wait till we get the S65 version!

The more I see it, the more I like it. If I were in the market for a chauffeur-driven car, this would be the one. A true "Meisterstück".
Like that Rubinschwarz/Ruby black colour very much on it.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
