SLK/SLC [Official] Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a compact executive roadster, produced by Mercedes-Benz. It was released in 1996 and was built at the Mercedes plant in Bremen, Germany, until the end of production in 2020. The former name "SLK" was derived from sportlich (sporty), leicht (lightweight), and kurz (short). With the release of the facelift R172 in 2016, the SLK-Class was renamed to SLC-Class in accordance with the revised nomenclature adopted by Mercedes. Under this scheme, roadsters use the base name "SL", followed by the model's placement in Mercedes-Benz hierarchy, the letter "C", being the roadster equivalent to the C-Class.

Looks like they elected to forgo the widebody treatment we've seen on recent AMGs. Very unfortunate considering the premium you pay. I think for the $$ you ought to have wider front and rear track with flared sheet metal to say, this is one bad SOB.

The new SLK is improved in so many areas, yet the front is still a huge mistake. We are seeing little movement, while the new CLS sales are off the charts.

Yeah thats true, the CLS is in hot demand and not just shipments, but in real time. Every CLS incoming my dealer showed me had a deposit down except 1. WOW. Mercedes has a hit on their hands. I agree about the SLK grille, it is just too big and doesn't fit on the small body. Other than that the SLK is nearly perfect. Its a really well built car with no excuses anywhere else.

The large grill you see on the new generation of Mercedes is to make they look flatter and lower to the ground. it works.

My question is: Will the SLK55 come close to matching the handling and grip levels of the BMW Z and Porsche Boxster? I am very doubtful.

That may be the technical reason why the grilles are the way they are, but they don't "work" to my eye. It looks like a large car styling trait carelessly applied to a smaller car. Either way it doesn't ruin the car so I'm indifferent about it.

Matching the BMW Z4 will be easy, it has already been universally derided for its un-BMW like ways when it comes to handling and what not. Porsche Boxster, not a chance IMO.

Really? Haven´t read anything of that.

True, it is arguably the best looking BMW on the road today. Only the 5-Series comes close IMO.

An Z4 M would cure the problem.

The standard Z4 BMW has softened, but the standard SLK is still notably softer. I believe both are fighting for a shrinking market of middle aged females. The SLK has proven to be more refined and comfortable in reviews.

The Porsche continues to earn praise for its handling and is undoubtedly the ethusiastic drivers choice.

I'm certain the SLK55 will be very different from the standard variant and in keeping with the excellent range of AMG's.

Sadly, reviews so far have the Z4 bettering the SLK in almost all dynamics criteria.
Dynamics ?. if you want to take the streets to go to work in a Yo-Yo then buy a bimmer. but is you want confort, safety and quality among others go with Benz.

I think Mercedes Benz gets it wrong again and again with the SLK55, because they do not want to make this car a SL beater (?) oh plsssssss. Weight is just plain stupid/crazy, little talk about handling (which can only mean one thing...you figure that out). It makes no sense to put a great motor in such a heavy car, and on top of that pay hardly any attention to handling/dynamics. Mercedes Benz seems to forget that this car should be brutal and it should be at a much higher level than a PorscheBoxter, in both weight and handling---but no no no--back to the same old SLK55, slow gear changes, floating handling and heavy as hell. MB, prove me wrong. More of the same---
You make an excellent point "mclarenftw":usa7uh:

ps: this car for lurkers and fanboys I am sure it is the best thing that could ever happened. For someone like me is like a kick in my stomach. It will take more than just COSMETICS and a NEW MOTOR with features that do not help car performance. What is the SLK55 AMG, really?? Is it really necessary in the MB line?? Does it matter?
My two cents:t-drive:

Well, the 2005 SLK55 AMG was 1465 kg---so it got fatter...? damn. Not sure what to make of this car--- cant wait for the reviews and a test to make my next move. So, far its quite disappointing. Of course, must wait for final numbers to come in. oh well......
Thanks for pointing that out Wolfgang:usa7uh:

The facts have been lost here I see. Why on earth would anyone think a SLK55 would weigh as much as the E63?
