I reckon that there are regional particularities that may come into play.

Where I live (southwest metro Hamburg), for example, the D5 A8 has been received well and appears to be (based on a totally unscientific "number of them seen on the road" perception) the most popular luxury segment sedan. Their numbers seem to comfortably exceed those of the W222 S-Class and especially those of the G11 7er. Why that is, I really don't have much of a clue. My region is, of course, far less "urbane" than central Hamburg. The W223 remains a rare sight and I think that more Taycans, which are actually not that rare, are cruising around here. Even a few Audi eTron GTs, one of which owned by an acquaintance whose previous car was a D4 S8.

Here is written that if the availability was on hend the sales would be much higher. Thete are too few cars available, thats why the sales don't mirror the demand and the acceptance of the car. Mercedes could eadily sell 200 k S class currently when no major competitor has a car on par with the S class.
