Dare I say that I MUCH prefer the W/V223s' interior/screen panel (running for cover in order to avoid getting pelted with raw potatoes) ? O.K., maybe the steering column screen appears a bit hamfisted ("It's too square, Daddy-O !")...but otherwise...nice.

I wonder when the configurator will be online in the US? I am curious about the price. The interiors shown including those seats are probably top of line option. The tech is nice, but does anyone really use all that stuff? I don't. I have gesture control in a vehicle and I turn it off. I mean three screens in the back for two passengers?? What do you do with the rear screens, play with the ambient lighting, play music, can the kids play videos, youtube, netflix? I would love a basic car with high quality materials in the interior, bullet proof reliability, killer suspension, V-8, same seats, minimal plastic, same head lights, real looking wood with no pinstripes, analog gauges. Does this exist? Maybe this car could come close, but the extensive use of plastic is a bit of a let down, really the center console. Are the A/C vents, interior door latch, door buttons metalized plastic? Could have made the steering wheel stalks metal. Just would have been a nice touch. I am due for a new car so where to turn? I like BMW but not the 7 series with the big grill, Porsche and Audi are out.

I really dont see you problem here. This is classic german nitpicking
Haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about, but I’m Dutch, so speak for yourself.
Your S-Class didn't even offer a HUD as standard.... and when MB released their very first HUD it was just medicore compared to the competition. What's so bad about offering different soundsystems? I don't see anyone of Daimler's rivals offering the top-of-the-line solutions as a standard kid.
As far as I know W223 isn’t offering HUD as standard as well. But now it’s offering two kind of HUD as extra. The “poor man’s“ version and the “premium“ version. Why not one HUD in the best iteration. It’s an S we‘re talking about... Reminds me of the pre FL E class: E63 and an E63s. The E63s would have been sufficient and to the point. It seems the only reason is, to have an excuse to get even more of my money.
The base trim was pi** poor. We all know that. The interior was a mix of plastic-trims that tried to look like real wood and "artico" artificial leather. That gave me taxi chills down my spine.
Obviously you never owned, driven or sat in a W222. In base trim it did have real wood (at least just as real as all the other wood options): dark brown eucalyptus wood. The standard seats did have real leather (non-nappa). I think you’re mixing up the W222 S class and the E class/W213.

John Cadogan is known for being a long time Mercedes hater.

He's also fairly objective about things, and reasonably knowledgable. Remembering that his target audience is Aussie car buyers... not internet forum fanboys, I'd trust his point of view for proper consumer advice more than most YouTubers. Yeah, his schtick might be grumpy old man, but at least he backs up with more than the feculent tropes the likes of Clarkson do.

And I’d like to ad, that what John Cadogan is actually saying in the yt video mentioned above, isn’t BS at all; on the contrary.

This guy is a flocking d_ck. Not to mention all of his videos. He is that sort of grandpa that looks dissatisfied with himself and the world. So let's do some videos and moan about everything.
Well that’s quite arrogant and disrespectful to say about someone you don’t even know.

Oh boy. You are so damn worng. I believe as a sales person, I have driven pretty much every Benz from a basic A160 to the original Maybach 57. Try again.

We all know how much the basic trim of the 222 sucks. And we all know - when being reveald - the S-Class used to have a carry over platform from the W221 and the age-old V6 diesel with an AT that was 10 years old - back then in 2013.
The base trim still comes with artico fake-leather, no matter if you hop in the facelift or the pre-facelift. And don't get me started about the base-headlamps. Funfact; they are still the same since 2013. There was no option for the Multibeam nor the UltraRange high beam unless you paid a four digit increase.
As far as I know the base sound-system used to have platic caps for the speakers.

So why are you highly strung about the base equipment, when Daimlers hasn't changed anything in it's pricing policies for S-Class in decades?

See, this is the problem. You believed that some sort of guy who hasn't have any experience in this sort of cars it talking to you.
I've been working for almost a decade for Sixt rental as a key account manager. I have to do with the big european OEMs every day. The S-Class is our business. We use this car for our management, as a rental or for VIPs.
I remember in late 2013, when the first 222's hit our HQ it recieved mixed emotions, because of the overall "cost-cutting" when you don't go with sky-high add-on option. And yes Sir, the base trim does not come with real wood. It's plastic that uses some sort of a "printed" cover that does look like wood. Ash tree, gum wood, oak tree, and so on. All wood inlets do look like the same and have the same optical marbling. That doesn't happen very often in mother nature, does it? ;)

Another developement I don’t like; offering extras in two qualities (“premium” and non-premium?):
- two types of HUD;
- two types of soundsystem (as we already know it);
- two types of light (multibeam and Digital light);
- etc.

i have to say i like it. so everybody can put together his car according to his wishes. i dont need the top level sound system. and i dont see the normal hud as a poor mans version. its the good and proven hud we all know. for many people the ar hud would surely be an overkill. with multibeam its the same.

You don’t know what I believe or not believe. But in denying W222 in base trim has leather seats and has wood but in stead plastic look-a-like as you first stated, says all to me.
Wether or not all wood options offered in all W222 are fake or not, is a completely different discussion and something you didn’t say. You where talking about W222 in base trim not having wood.
And as for “credentials” go, I’ll play along; I’ve owned 4 S class in a row in the last 14 years (W221and W222 both pre FL and FL) and driven them now for just about 830,000 Km. Full options as well as less sumptuous iterations; I know what they look like...

i can say thats not true. the leather is real and multibeam is since 2018 or 2019 standard equipment in 222. at least in germany.

I'm checking the Mercedes-Benz Deutschland website every day to see if the configurator is on for the new S.

this is not necessary. it will be online for the order release (bestellfreigabe) first. and this will be announced in advance. you will not miss it.

@S600 any idea when order release (Bestellfreigabe) is planned? Can’t take too long, now the first cars allegedly should be on the road in November.

I suppose Daimler (and all other German manufacturers) has special versions for the rental companies, that are not officially offered.
