S-Class (W222/C217/A217) [Official] Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222)

The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class. Body styles: W222 (standard), V222 (long), X222 (limousine, Mercedes-Maybach), VV222 (pullman), C127 (coupé), A217 (convertible). Predecessor: S-Class (W221). Successor: S-Class (W223). Production: 2013–2020.
That interior color is everything.

I think you and I agree whole heartesy on this. The S or some variants of the S (née Maybach) needs desperately to move upmarket. They need a more upmarket palette and quality of interior appointments.

As over the top as the original Maybach was, I loved that they experimented with different materials like stone. The Japanese style panoramic sunroof was also an Art Deco piece.

Hopefully we see a return to form on the current and future halo products from MB to take on the likes of the Phantoms and Mulaannes of the world; especially when we all know good things always come in threes :)

That S560 is beautiful. Mercedes really needs to encourage dealers to stock more designo cars and the program needs to be available on every Mercedes model, not just the S. Imagine an C or E done up this way! The new GLE or a GLC or even an A-Class sedan. It would sell to people who want some bespoke at all levels.

I'm sure they've explored it- probably just not worth it for those cars. The high ticket interior options have a very low take rate. The designo interior on the C-class is not very common at all (bad pic but you get the idea):

That looks fantastic for a C interior!

You guys are lucky to even have the option of Designo interiors on cars as low down in the the range as the C-class. Here we have to deal with MB being treated as a mass market brand where we take them as they come.

I guess I don't understand what the shock is here, we knew the V12 was engine in the AMG models long time ago.

Come again?

The only shock is that MB didn’t wait until the end of the generation. The S73 is 2+ years out.

This is the end of the generation, the new S is being presented around this time next year. They've already dropped the SL65 and it would seem to me that the S65 sedan would be next. I read a while back that is the last model year for the S65 Coupe and Cabriolet also. So no I don't see what the shock is here.

Edit: In the original post, not sure what happened, but I meant to say that we knew the V12 was ending in the AMG models long time ago.

Wow, I’m shocked they threw in the towel earlier than expected. I mean the engine is almost 20 years old, but no engine in the future will match it’s smoothness. What about the coupé?

All V12 versions are axed, I’m sorry to say. Source: MB passion

The V12 in Maybach S650 will still be there untill the end of this generation. Why Mercedes axed the V12 in all AMG SL and AMG S so early?I thinks it's due to the slowing selling. The only V12 model sold well currently is Maybach S650,so it has a chance to survive.

Judging by the popularity of this thread (343 pages), the S class must be the most important thing in the automotive industry, at least for the fans of the GCF. Nothing else comes close to the interest towards the S class.

From next year 2020 the emissions requirements will become stricter in Europe so probably Mercedes didnt want to continue the V12 to improve the the CO2 average of its range. The new S-class is on the arisen and AMG will replace the V12 with a hybridized version of its 4.0ltr V8, which is already been shown in an AMG GT Concept a 2 years ago in 600kw (816PS) form. This will make a worthy replacement for the V12 as it will bring in valuable reduction in fuel/emissions, plus much more power/torque and in electric mode will be silent enough.

Correct. I asked the dealer here about it and they sell like 5-6 S65s a year.

If they made it with 4matic and significat power advantage over S63 then it would go better.

Technically, 4-Matic and the V12 are incompatible, so that played a big part in the car’s demise. The S63 has cannibalized it by being much quicker and cheaper.

When I bought my S65 back in 2006 it was the only S AMG on sale at the time and MBUSA sold a few hundred that year.

Back then 612 hp/1000 nm tq in a production 4 door was still unheard of and it was the quickest 4 door on sale on paper by a margin. Times have really changed in 12-13 years.

That's why the S73 AMG is planned. The V12 is ancient and cannot be squeezed any further.

I assume the S65 coupe and the S650 Maybach will remain on sale an additional year, until the W223 debuts.

@Yaz well they can continue to produce engines for them.

Why? BMW made V12 with 4WD, Audi does it with their W12 for a long time...
