The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class produced from 2013 to 2020, serving as the successor to the W221 S-Class and predecessor to the W223 S-Class. The W222 has a similar design theme to the C-Class (W205) and E-Class (W213).

Clearly it is the best S-Class since the legendary W126 of the 80's. I can't wait to see what 2020 will bring for it's replacement.

I just hope they don't mess up the next generation immediately after a very successful iteration. MB has done this on number of occasions over the decades throughout the lineup. Most recently with the R231 and W218 CLS.

I suspect that M-B, with its' design department headed by Gordon Wagener, has a "better grip" on what is eye-appealing versus what we witnessed during the calamitous "Pfeiffer Era". Should the 2015 Vision IAA Concept be a relatively accurate indication of what we can expect in the medium-term future with regard to M-Bs' larger cars, there should be no reason for concern.

How can you even beat that thing ? This car pack it all, performance, luxury, techs, and damn it looks astonishing.

Until I see a real M7 in the market, this car has no competitor. Bentely and RR suppose to be in a differnet league so no comparision here.
 
The facelift has taken the S to another level. With no major challenger on the horizon except for the new A8, the W222 will remain undefeated until it's replaced. Can't wait for the I6 mild hybrid reviews.

There are no belts. The M256 employs a 48-volt electrical system, so the AC compressor and water pump are electric. The alternator is integrated into the starter motor, both of which actually compromise a part called the Integrated Starter Generator, or ISG. It’s an electric motor wrapped around the crankshaft, sandwiched between the engine block and the transmission. There’s also an electric supercharger, as well as a conventional turbocharger. From a dead stop, and because electric motors provide 100 percent of their torque at zero rpm, the ISG instantly spins the crankshaft, giving the S500 a quick jump off the line. Even with the traction control fully enabled, you can chirp the rear tires.

At the same time, the electric supercharger is boosting the engine. The handoff between initial electric propulsion and gasoline power is seamless. It’s also not really a handoff because the ISG continues to do some work. Once engine revs are high enough and enough exhaust pressure has been built up to spin the turbocharger, a valve in the engine’s plumbing closes and starves the supercharger. However, during certain mid-rev duties, the electric supercharger assists the turbo, and the ISG is always there, lending a helping hand. Power is great—especially as this is the non-AMG version—rated at 435 horsepower and 384 lb-ft or torque.



Frankly that feels underrated, likely due to the tsunami of torque the 48-volt system enables. Remember, there’s no way to accurately state the combined torque from a hybrid. Electric motors make peak torque at 0 rpm, whereas twisting force for an internal combustion engine peaks at higher engine speeds. There’s also a weaker iteration of this engine found in the S450, which produces 367 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Also, there’s at least one AMG tune of the M256 coming. Also cool: Unlike almost every V-6 ever built, inline-sixes sound great, and AMG has a sound department. Mercedes says the S500 can hit 62 mph in 4.8 seconds, meaning 60 mph in 4.7-ish seconds, which is exactly what the old V-8 powered S550 did when we tested it.


When the engine turns off, the ISG keeps the transmission spinning or “sailing,” maintaining speed until the nearly 1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery needs to be juiced or propulsion power is needed, and the engine is silently switches back on. Remember, the ISG is also the starter motor, and it’s already at work. Calling me impressed is an understatement. There is no shaking, no vibration, no nothing. I couldn’t believe it.

Right, so Mercedes-Benz has just breathed electric life into the internal combustion engine. Excited? Want to polka on down to your friendly neighborhood Mercedes-Benz dealer and buy one? Well guess what—you can’t! Mercedes is not giving the U.S. this car with this engine. Why not? A crowd of annoyed German engineers blamed it on “a stupid decision from the sales guys in the U.S.” Daimler board member Ola Källenius said Americans are much more interested in V-8s. Given the expense of launching a model—any model—Mercedes has decided to follow the money and stick with the V-8 S560 for now, and if price-conscious American S-Class buyers do exist, Mercedes will sell them an S450 with last year’s V-6 technology. You can’t necessarily fault the company for that. But I think it’s the wrong decision.

Mercedes-Benz’s slogan is “the best or nothing.” The M256 engine is one of the best six-cylinder engines in the world. This is what the three-pointed star is supposed to be selling us Americans, the brand’s largest market. Not yesterday’s fish. We want the best. Am I being harsh? Hey, it’s the company’s slogan. “Or nothing” it is then. At least for a year because odds are pretty good that the U.S. will get a 2019 S500. Of course, we’re going to be seeing a great deal of this engine and its variants. Vollrath explained to me that all current Mercedes model lines were designed with this engine in mind, meaning that every current car that has a V-6 can accept this game-changing new inline-six. This will begin happening sooner than later. Expect to first experience the M256 on American soil when the new CLS shows up later this fall. Also, it’s gonna be called a CLS53. Yup, Mercedes-AMG vehicles that are E-Class size and up will no longer be called 43s. They will be 53s. Meaning that the C-Class with the AMG version of the inline-six will be a C43, but the E-Class version will be an E53. Confusing?

What I’m really saying is, Mercedes, give us the good stuff! Speaking of good stuff, you had better believe that the 48-volt technology will propagate throughout the Mercedes lineup. The most logical variant will be an inline-four, and that’s definitely coming. There will eventually be a 48-volt mild-hybridized V-8, too. Much more interesting, to me at least, will be the new 6.0-liter V-12, which will essentially be two M256s joined at the crank. If one M256 is 435 horsepower, we’re talking an easy 800 horsepower here, if not more, and that’s in the non-AMG state of tune. 1,000 horsepower electrically assisted beltless 12-cylinder? Me want now. Me bet you want now, too.

I'm still not sure which one I should take. AMG line isn't quite elegant enough and the standardversion looks great from the side and rear, but the front is a bit strange, with the wide chromestrip. I'll be driving a S400d 4Matic soon, but don't know yet in which guise it comes: AMG line or standard. Maybe I know what I want after the testdrive...
 
The S-class after the facelift, looks ludicrous, but the new A8, came out ahead of Mercedes. I have to see live both cars to say their feelings.
 
That was probably the best read from Motor Trend in the last 2-3 years. They're telling it like it is. Why on earth would you sell a damn V6 S450 in the U.S. when the new S500 has an I6 that sounds like the perfect engine? A 435hp S500, probably rebadged S450 in the U.S. would have been the PERFECT car to combat the new 415hp LS500. Sales guys made a decision not to sell it here? WTF??? Stupid decision. The V6 S450 is going to get beat left and right by the new LS500 in every test, watch and see. Yes a 435hp S500/S450 would be too close the 463hp S560 in our market, so they could have easily detuned the S450/S500 to 390hp or just gave us a higher tuned version of the euro market S450. DUMB move by MBUSA.

According to the reviews from some Chinese automobile media,S500's I6 engine is noisier,S560's V8 engine is quieter,S500 is not as powerful as the S560,but with more agility and less consumption.
