After accidentally leaking a preview on its home-market configuration website last week, Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled its revised flagship luxo-muscle sedans, the S63 AMG and S65 AMG, at the 2009 Shanghai Motor Show today. Both are treated to the same updates given to the entire S-Class range, but these two big beasts pack one seriously mean punch.

Engines carry over largely unchanged from the outgoing models, which is good news because they're some of the most powerful units on the market. The S63 packs AMG's 6.2-liter V8 offering up 525 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, while the top-of-the-line, have-to-have-the-best S65 AMG (above) features an enormous 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 pumping out 612 horsepower and a gravity-altering 738 lb-ft of torque. That's a lot of power, but at nearly $200k, the $130k S63 seems like a relative bargain, especially when you consider that the bi-turbo V12 model only gains 0.2 seconds off the V8's 0-60 time.

Although the engines are ostensibly the same, they've been tweaked to improve fuel consumption and carbon emissions by about 3%. They're also both mated to a new Torque Vectoring system that brakes the inside rear wheel in a corner to assist handling, plus a crosswind compensation system. Visually the AMG sedans get a new chromed-up angular grille, LED daytime running lights in the air intakes, full LED tail-lights incorporating 52 LEDs apiece, and a redesigned rear bumper with an integrated diffuser, plus all the requisite special badging and wheels. The interior has also been upgraded with bells and whistles, all of which you can read in the press release after the jump and view in the galleries below. - Autoblog — We Obsessively Cover The Auto Industry

The S-Class looks like a new vehicle...that S600 is ridiculous.

Post-facelift is almost always the best time to buy a Mercedes model. Absolutely stunning.

wow, I think it needs some more bling, maybe some chrome around the windscreen.

Looks stunning, but also the S 600 needs definitely different wheels, 19' rims or AMG ones!! Then this car should be pure magic!! Especially in black - it looks fantastic!! And not even like a facelift, like a whole new car!

^Isn't the 7er has the same kind of chrome bar on the front bumper?:t-crazy2:

Ignoring for a second how that is of any relevance, no, I don't think 7er has a chrome bar on the front bumper, it is polished aluminum or something.

And it is not just the chrome bar in the S class, it is whole effect between all the chrome and the LEDs, the front end is just too bling-bling for my taste.

Really does look good. I do prefer the prefacelift rear end. Not at all convinced with the lower bumper and tailpipe design on this one.

I honestly, Cannot see some1 buying a 7 series after seeing these pics....There is currently no competition what so ever with the S CLASS....

People who doesn't like Mercedes or people who driven BMW for many years.
Members on this board are masters of making fuss about nothing. I've seen the new E-class and E-class Coupe in real life now and its nothing unique or something special like some people make it sound like. What saving the S-class is the AMG package, without it there are many out great looking cars on the market to choose between.
S-class is a fine car but so are many other cars.

LOL, Sunny :D

Yep, same with BMW. It's afterall the look they will go down into the history books with. Pre-facelift simply doesn't count anymore after a facelift.

Same with me, only opposite.

I've seen the FL S Class. I'm not cancelling my 750i order. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the core styling errors made in the S Class that can only be removed with the new model deter my taste for this vehicle. It also doesn't suit my own personality and driving habits. I for one have never been a fan of adding chrome to every bit of the interior and exterior to give the illusion of quality and luxury - to tacky for my liking...

Yes,I agree the AMG package enhances the look of the S,making it more than appealing, but without it,it still looks good in reality,i agree that in some pics the non-amg pack version looks bland but in real life it's another stroy..Personally if i had S class money..i wouldn't go for the amg pack cos i just like the understated look more and i think many would share my sentiment on this one.

Guys, lets try to keep the 7er out of the discussion. This thread is for the W221 LCI.

Internal combustion is for the S vs 7er posts :) :usa7uh:

Thats true...but the previous 7 series...I liked the pre-facelift front better, but like liked the facelift rear.

Well I personally like those wheels. Yes, their not as sporty...but that's what the AMGs are for. I do like those AMG ones though..especially the S65 rims.

Merc1, that is so true! Something about the Facelift models bring out the best. Same went for the W220. The face lift model was way better looking. Do you remember the changes they made to the W140 when it was time for it's facelift?

That's the way I like my Benz...all black

I honestly, Cannot see some1 buying a 7 series after seeing these pics....There is currently no competition what so ever with the S CLASS....

Exactly!...I got to see the new 7 series and 2008 S550 in downtown DC and the S-class still got more looks. I'm joking..but the S-class did look better IMO (and this was the Pre-Facelift model).

core styling errors made in the S Class

LLS...Are you serious?

Did you not see the usage of chrome on the previous 7 series?

Chrome looks fantastic on these types of cars. It really made the previous 7series stand out just like this S-class.

Out of the top models I think I like the S 63 best. S 65 has that tacky twin-slit grille and the S 600 has the absolutely horrible rims. The S 63 on the other hand has no such evident weaknesses.
