R-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz R-Class Facelift (W 251)

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class (W251) is a mid-size luxury MPV introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2005 for the 2006 model year. The R-Class shared its platform with the M-Class (W164) and GL-Class (X164) and was available in two wheelbase lengths: standard 2,980 mm (117.3 in) and long 3,215 mm (126.6 in).

Mercedes-Benz mulls return of R class for some markets

Mercedes-Benz is thinking about bringing the R class back to international markets, according to a report.

The R class was available from 2006 until 2013, when it was withdrawn from almost every international market due to slow sales. But it remains in production for China, where it continues to be popular.

Mercedes is transfering output of the R class from its plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to AM General, which will build it under contract starting this summer at a factory near South Bend, Ind.

The resurgence of interest in luxury SUVs and crossovers following a brief lull is the reason Mercedes is giving the R class, which mixes the attributes and styling of multi-purpose vehicles, minivans and SUVs, another look.

Wolf-Dieter Kurz, Mercedes-Benz vice president of product group SUVs and sports cars, told caradvice.com the company is interested in expanding its SUV and crossover lineup further, following the debut of the GLE Coupe and redesigns of the GLE-class and GLC-class models.

"Basically I think I feel that the SUV segment -- due to its growth, and the worldwide interest that the SUVs have -- the SUV segment will be also in future the one which sees most derivatives, let’s say, in the outskirts of the portfolio," Kurz told caradvice.com. "Because it’s getting kind of fuzzy in its outskirts, let’s say."

In an interview with Automotive News this week, Kurz said there are no plans to reintroduce the current R class in the U.S.

He said American consumers were initially confused with the R class and later decided it was too similar to a station wagon, a segment that has struggled in recent decades in the U.S.

The R class has continued to be a solid seller in China, a market predisposed toward luxury MPVs -- Buick fields two large luxury vans there. But the R class was not a major sales success in the U.S. despite the variety of models offered, including an AMG variant, and was withdrawn in 2013 after a 2010 facelift failed to maintain sufficient consumer attention.

Kurz says Mercedes-Benz is still interested in roomy touring crossovers.

"There was already one that we had in the portfolio -- maybe we were too early -- which was the R-Class, which we are still selling in China. It’s doing good, with 12,000 to 14,000 units per year," Kurz said.

The departure of the R class from the company's lineup left a hole in terms of size and utility, with only the GLE and the GLS offering similar amounts of room, though in a distinctly SUV wrapper.

The seemingly unrestrained proliferation of crossover models from Germany's luxury automakers seems to have ignored roomier MPVs, though the new Mercedes-Benz Metris, which will arrive in a matter of months, will offer van buyers an all-new option.

This article is geared to the US market. If MB was serious about an R-class replacement in the US, they would just bring over the V-class and sell it along side the Metris. The minivan market attracts a certain audience and these folks are not looking for pretend-mobiles (R-class, and whatever the Inifiniti based on the Pathfinder is called).

The V-class has an interior that puts the current SUV offerings like ML, GL to shame and enough room to offer a legitimate 7-passenger option to the Honda's, Toyota's etc. Honestly, not offering this car in the US was a missed opportunity. As someone who works at a dealership, I see so many client's visiting and asking if Mercedes-Benz makes a minivan only to tell them that we don't. These folks don't convert to GL buyers either since the interior layout is not what minivan shoppers are looking for.

Yes, agree. MBUSA seems to have tested the V-Class in focus groups but it didn't do so well for some reason, according to Bernie Glaser? :)

Mercedes made it clear they’re not interested in marketing this toward families, “but we certainly won’t stop anyone from buying one,” Daimler Vans’ VP Bernie Glaser told me with a shrug and cool accent.

Basically, the luxo-minivan (what Europe gets as the V-Class) didn’t test well with focus groups and Mercedes doesn’t think American consumers would care for the commercial-spec Metris’ interior as a daily driver.

Some kind of top secret prototypes were spotted recently in Sindelfingen? :)

Jees what's that Wolf? I can see 3 prototypes, the one one the video looks more like a high riding SUV than R class replacement, the shoulder line is slopping though (coupe ish).
G replacement perhaps;)

Last one looks like C class 4 door coupe.

You should post this in the 'What's next'thread!

Sorry, but that doesn't fly. Yes, the V-class interior is nice, and yes, Mercedes is behind in some areas. But that isn't why the R failed.
There is a stigma with minivans, which is one reason the R-class failed in the US. It wasn't a van, but it sure looked liked one. It was on the same RWD platform as the ML and GL. Consider the opposite of this.;
Currently, the Infiniti QX60 is their best seller (our dealer group owns an Infinity franchise.). It is built on the same FWD platform as the Nissan Quest minivan, and new Pathfinder, but guess what? It doesn't look like a minivan. It has the flexible seating and excellent space management. Sad to say, but Inifinit (a glamourized Nissan) did a better job with execution and quality materials. This gets back to the truth that perception is reality.

Perhaps.

Kurz did not wish to comment about the rumored massive upgrade planned for next year, but did hint that a more comprehensive update is in the works. Source: caradvice.com.au

Or a GLT mule as discussed in the What's Next thread. :)

Let's agree to disagree on this one. :) The only reason I can see this being Infiniti's best seller is because, until now, they lacked a proper SUV in their line up to compete with the likes of the ML, X5, MDX, RX etc. The QX70 is too niche a product and the QX80 is just too damn larger (larger even than the GL). So yes, I can see this being a good seller for Nissan since it is a legitimate midsize SUV offering from the brand.

That does not mean, however, that the V-class shoppers would suddenly rush to this car if the V-class was offered in the states. Minivans are still good business for the automakers that compete in this category (read: Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Chevy et al). I believe there's a business case to be made for the V-class in the US if they can keep the pricing in line with the ML range ($50-$60K).

I read about the AM General plant on NYT earlier this morning. The NYT story suggests this plant is building cars specifically for the Chinese market.

2011 Mercedes R-Class facelift

Sold exclusively in China
Following an agreement signed early this year, AM General has commenced production of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class.

Previously assembled at Mercedes-Benz's factory in Vance, Alabama, the R-Class is now being produced by AM General at their facility in Mishawaka, Indiana, This move allows the Daimler-owned marque to free up production capacity which will be utilized to boost manufacturing rate of the GLE, GLE Coupe and the GL (soon to become GLS).

AM General used to make the Hummer H2 for General Motors and now they are producing the R-Class which is exclusively being sold in China where the model has proven to be relatively popular even though it failed anywhere else. This is a multi-year deal between the two parties and without this agreement the R-Class would have been phased out.

Although the R-Class will remain a China-only product, Mercedes-Benz is analyzing the prospects of developing a second generation which would likely be a global model. However, the car hasn't received the stamp of approval yet from the top brass at Daimler, so even if green-lighted, it won't be out before the end of this decade.
