Yeah I thought Lesnik would be a shoe in for lead designer.

What are Badstubners previous works? When did he join MB and when will we likely see the first results of his input?

He reports to Robert Lesnik. Car Design News had an article about a year ago, describing the change. :)

Achim Badstübner is leaving Audi after 13 years with the company. The 49-year-old designer will join Daimler on January 1, 2014. He will be leading Mercedes-Benz exterior design and report to Robert Lesnik, whose position he takes over.

Thanks Wolfgang. I have read that article previously. It's still very unclear about the role Robert Lesnik now has.

It's also a bit sad if Lesnik won't be penning any future designs, because what he has designed has been excellent.

Like the article points out, I imagine MB design is once again becoming one of the more lucrative design studios to join given how much freedom they have had with the newer generation of cars.

Some info about Robert Lesnik's new position. :)

He’s now overseeing a team of 65 people – including design engineers – and tasked with developing the next phase of the ‘sensual purity’ design ethos he helped create since joining the company in 2009. - See more at: http://formtrends.com/mercedes-benz-exterior-design-director-on-sensual-purity

^^very informative one Wolf(y). Would be interesting to see the next phase of this 'sensual purity'design, I suspect we will see it in the next S?

Yes, probably. And advanced design led by Steffen Köhl may have some input as well, with Sylvain Wehnert's F 015 Luxury in Motion monolithic ideas seen recently, or Bastian Baudy's Vision Gran Turismo.

Must say under Gordon Wagener MB have come a long way from the Peter Pfeiffer era

Absolutely, Mr. Wagener has taken the design to a new dimension, which is more youthful and conceptual which is the demanding factor in present day market. But during Mr. Pfeiffer era he had the best design for the time. Can't deny the fact that he also was great designer and one of the longest chief who was handling much younger and young at heart team like Mr. Wagener.

The Mercedes GLE Coupe Might Be More Rational Than You Think

The Mercedes GLE Coupe may still be the answer to a question only BMW X6 owners asked, but it does surprise in one area – space. I sort of forgot about my reservations regarding the GLE Coupe's looks and purpose in life once I stepped inside. It may not be the stylish place that is the new C and S classes, but the GLE Coupe at least has a quality interior that you can almost see out of.

The X6 is an enormous car with tiny windows and a cramped back seat that confounds logic. The GLE, on the other hand, is reasonably comfortable front and rear – and it's not as claustrophobic, even with the dark headliner and upholstery on the AMG-trimmed car.

The cargo area, though impeded because of the fastback roofline, is at least long and deep, with generous underfloor storage. It's almost practical, which defies logic if you've ever spent time with the X6 and now-dead Acura ZDX. The GLE Coupe almost makes these "four-door SUV Coupes" seem like an OK idea. Almost.

Back on the outside, though, I can't help but think the GLE Coupe could've been styled better. It looks far too much like someone over-inflated an S-Class Coupe, or just completely forgot to style the back of it. I somewhat preferred the base model GLE350 without the AMG add-ons, if only because it made it look more honest.

But I suppose the person who buys this won't be looking for subtlety. At least they can take comfort in the, well, comfortable interior for four people and a cargo area that might actually be able to hold things.

Mercedes-Benz discusses future SUV designs, and how it was inspired by BMW X6

It may be stating the obvious, but Mercedes-Benz’s global chief of design Gorden Wagener has admitted the company created the new GLE Coupe in direct response to the BMW X6.

However, while the two ‘coupe-SUVs’ are similar in conception, in many design aspects the pair couldn’t be more different. Wagener, unsurprisingly, professes to be no great fan of BMW’s styling beyond the basic proportions its cars share with his.

Simply put, says the Mercedes-Benz design director, BMW overcomplicates its designs with complex surfacing, an approach he says is in direct contrast with his direction for Mercedes.

“We invented many segments, we did not invent SUV coupe, that was the X6,” said Wagener, referring to the polarising BMW X5 spin-off that has sold in surprisingly strong numbers (more than 250,000 units globally) since 2008 and spawned an X4 offshoot.

“We in design will all say it’s a good concept, we liked it, and now of course we do it as well, but we approach it differently, as the inventor of the four-door coupe, we took kind of a CLS shape for the coupe and just put SUV genes on it.”

Wagener pointed to the challenges in making a big bulky SUV ‘sporty’ in design somehow, given the need for a high front end, and even higher tail and lines that hide the exaggerated proportions.

“[Traditionally] we don’t like the wedge shape, and there needs to be a certain weight balance, also aero and stuff… But in the end I think we managed to do a very unique car, a very clean car that is essential for our purity philosophy, it’s quite sexy and sculptured.

“There’s not a lot of stuff on it, you know,” he said, referring to the relatively uncluttered design, before contrasting this with his distaste for BMW’s approach.

“I probably see the niche models from BMW there’s a lot of ‘stuff’ happening, you see creases and lines and stuff, surfaces, cut lines and undercuts along the side and rear. But we do the opposite, completely smooth and clean.

“And I think that it looks more modern to me,” he said, later adding “it’s more difficult to approach things clean, without stuff… it’s way more difficult to take lines off.

“If you like it take a line off, if you still like it, take another line off,” he said.

Expect this approach, one that emphasis curves rather than edges, and simple surfaces rather than complex ones, to filter into all imminent Mercedes-Benz SUVs, from the new GLE (a replacement for the ML) due in April, and the vital compact GLC (replacing the GLK) due later in the year.

“I think it previews our entire SUV line-up. We’re bringing out a lot of SUVs this year, the GLE and GLS, which will benefit from what we did there. And of course there will be a new GLC, which will be a complete paradigm shift from a completely edgy car of my predecessor to something as smooth as you can see out there.

“[They’re] going to be very different from the current models,” he said.

Will we see a ‘coupe’ version of the GLC, a la the BMW X4?

“I mean [hypothetically], GLC would work great as a coupe, the new car will be much much sportier than the current, so it would fit,” Wagener said.

“[Traditionally] we don’t like the wedge shape, and there needs to be a certain weight balance, also aero and stuff

Sure you don't. That's why you @ MB have introduced an "anti-wedge" shoulder line on ALL the newest & upcoming MB models. A line that's higher at the front & lower at the end of the car. An anti-wedge line ... with some stuff.

“I probably see the niche models from BMW there’s a lot of ‘stuff’ happening, you see creases and lines and stuff, surfaces, cut lines and undercuts along the side and rear. But we do the opposite, completely smooth and clean.

Sure. But that's why BMW still has some distinctive designs in the line-up - while MB is applying same character lines & same grilles & same headlight designs to ALL models. That's the problem when you start simplifying & cleaning the lines "and stuff", Herr Wagener.

“And I think that it looks more modern to me,” he said, later adding “it’s more difficult to approach things clean, without stuff… it’s way more difficult to take lines off.

No, Herr Wagener, it's much, much harder to make complex designs appealing & tasteful & controlled. Simple lines & designs are inoffensive & more appealing per se. So, it's harder to make great design by applying new lines "and stuff" than taking them off.

And it's a BIG question whether clean designs are more modern or more timeless (classic). IMO it's more the latter than the former but ... It's just my humble opinion ... and stuff.

I finally got to see this in person this past weekend. I really like it, more than the X6. That said, I don't think it is going to light the sales charts afire in the U.S. I just hope the regular GLE looks this good in April.

Marcus, can you elaborate a bit further, please

What did you like, what you didn't, what suprised you (if anything), etc etc

Just the overall shape, less sharp/creased than the X6. The wheels are a big factor too, they're just the right size too. Interior looks better in person also, though dated vs newer MBs.
