GLE [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé (C292)


The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly Mercedes-Benz M-Class (designated with the "ML" nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS, the latter with which it shares platforms.
Thanks for the comparo, @Wolfgang :) The current german configurator features Palladium for the GLE and not (yet?) Selenite. The IAA picture could also be Designo Graphite. I don't know, that lighting on the floor in Frankfurt can play tricks with your eyes. In a week we know what it is.

Finally saw this one the weekend in Diamond White and Silver. Far more impressive looking in person and easily equal measure to the X6.The BMW is more macho and aggressive and detailed, the Mercedes is more elegant and simple, yet still athletic. It actually is also beautifully executed at the rear, unlike the frumpy look it appears to have in photos. Take your pick, as these are both fantastic looking SUV coupes.

Review: 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Coupe

We may not get the whole SUV/coupe thing, but Mercedes knows a good niche when it sees one.

I’ll never understand this whole SUV-as-a-coupe subsegment. (Hell, I’m still trying to wrap my head around how a four-door sedan can be classified as a coupe – thanks for opening that can of worms,Mercedes-Benz CLS.) Never mind the “exclusivity” or “personalization” or any other luxury automaker buzzword. You’re actually just paying more money for less car. In the case of the Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Coupe you see here has less passenger space, less cargo volume, and costs more money than the standard version. That swooping roofline makes it look all sorts of bad, too – it’s like a giant, puffy armadillo that you can’t get in or out of without bumping your head. Why would you pay more for that?

I know, I’m in the minority. The GLE Coupe and its key rival, the BMW X6, have carved out their little niche in the automotive landscape, and have led to the creation of similarly shaped, smaller products, like the forthcoming GLC Coupe and BMW X4. But while this weird sport-utility-coupe thing doesn’t make sense to my practical eye, there’s still a lot to like here. After all, underneath that curvy new roofline is the very-good Mercedes GLE.

Pros

I really like the 3.0-liter biturbo V6 with the AMG tune – it’s great in the C450, and I can’t wait to see it proliferate through all the new AMG 43 cars. With 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, it doesn’t make the nearly 5,000-pound GLE450 Coupe feel super quick or anything, but the power delivery is silky smooth and never laggy.
I’ve finally found a nine-speed transmission I like; the biggest compliment for the 9G-Tronic transmission is that you don’t even notice it’s there. Leave it to Mercedes to design an in-house nine-speed that bests the ZF-sourced unit found in vehicles like the Chrysler 200 or Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.
It’s a little topsy turvy at times, but I like the way the GLE450 Coupe drives. The steering has a nice weight and action and the suspension – even in Sport setting – isn’t too harsh. Overall, it moves down the road with a pleasant grace and smooth ride. That said, my test car rolls on different 20-inch wheels that Mercedes fitted for use with winter tires. I’m not sure if/how the standard 21- or optional 22-inch rollers affect the ride quality.
You can probably guess that I’m also not a fan of the weird BMW X6, but given a choice between the two, I’d take the GLE Coupe, for sure. The GLE’s interior looks and feels more special than the X6. The Merc’s a better steer, too.

Cons

I’m not going to harp on the styling again, but I will say that the compromised shape makes the GLE Coupe hard to see out of. You sit really high up, but the roofline is low. And rearward visibility out of the hatch glass is pretty poor. Plus – because it’s a coupe, remember? – there’s no rear wiper. It would’ve been nice to have that while driving on a rainy day.
The interior may be a high-lux experience, but it still feels a generation too old. The standard GLE-Class has this problem, as does the larger GLS-Class. They both have nice materials and are super comfy, but all of the switchgear looks a few years behind the rest of the Mercedes curve.
$88,035. That’s the price you pay for the GLE450 seen here. I don’t really think that’s terribly expensive, given how much luxury cars actually cost these days. I’ll just remind you that a similarly equipped, more functional, slightly less-powerful GLE400 4Matic SUV costs about $10,000 less.

Agreed.
I finally saw one in the metal, got inside (unlike most here) played with the controls and checked out the interior and space inside. It`s not bad at all. The interior, though a little dated has a classiness about it. The outward visibility from behind the wheel is not that great but the room, even in the rear seat and boot area was better than I expected.

You can add this Benz to your portfolio where photos do it no justice.

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe received a robust body and aggressive design.

BMW X6 is a car that still attracts a lot of attention to the public and that awakens emotions in the driver. A similar plan car Volkswagen and Audi, but among the first who answered the Munich giant Mercedes-Benz, whose GLE Coupe response that shoot straight to the heart.

Design

High body and coupe-like design looks really powerful from all angles. Is truly a winning combination. Lateral lines are elegant, light and end groups in the style of S-Class Coupe, which is one of the most beautiful cars of today. While the X6 through its "evolution" lost some curves, and designers have made sure that the car is not too arrogant, GLE Coupe has been designed without compromise. It has huge dimensions, large bumpers, "swollen" hood, a relatively small windows, huge grille with a big star in the middle ...

Great attention is paid to the gigantic wheels - test car was equipped with a 21 inch diameter wheels! Yeah, like pizza for two. On this car is all tremendously. When one next to each other look GLE Coupe and the BMW X6, a crossover from Munich looks somewhat small, although long by 9 millimeters. GLE Coupe is wider than the X6 by 14 millimeters and has a track width increased by 19 mm.

Interior

As is usual nowadays, the cars get the style of other models of the same brand. Such is the case for GLE Coupe, we can say that we are well-known for its interior. The concept cabin is similar to the GLE or its predecessor, the ML. Novelty is a display Command Online multimedia system, which is on top of the center console and the command Touch to control it, which is located on the central tunnel. Command system is intuitive and easy to use - it deserves all the praise. Shifters, as we expected for, is positioned on the steering column, on the right, a manual mode allows gear changes via the steering wheel controls (automated dual-clutch transmission with 9 gears!).

As you'd expect from a car with the three-pointed star in the sign, the seats are superbly designed and large in size. There is no person who will not find the optimal seating position in the car.

To be more direct, the seats are perfectly designed. Did you expect it to be different? Models marked with a star are much better seats than those in airplanes, or better to compare them with the airline business class. There is a man who will not find the optimal seating position. Every part of the body receives support and on longer journeys there is not the slightest sign of fatigue, not the driver but not from the passengers. The trunk is large and offers a large flat surface. Line loading area is flat with the edge of the bumper, making it easier to load luggage, although the level of the trunk at a slightly higher height (91 centimeters). Of course, the manipulation of the tailgate is fully electric, so in terms of driving in the rain, you do not have to tinker hands to open the trunk, it is sufficient to press the button on the "key". When folded down rear seat backrests, obtained above-average long flat surface (1.8 meters!). Base trunk volume is 650 liters, and when the rear seat backrests sets, growing at a respectable 1,720 liters.

If you need something to criticize, it is transparent to the rear of the car, but it is the fate of all SUV models who want to be compartments. The roof line is sloping towards the back, resulting in a wide C-pillars and small glass surfaces. All praise Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe deserves the space that offers rear passengers. Although this SUV with a coupé-like silhouette, rear-seat passengers enjoy all the conveniences. Even those with a height of 190 cm, in front of the knee will have a large "reserve" space, and overhead.

Engine

Mercedes-Benz for the GLE Coupe (C292) has only one diesel powertrain, unlike its more practical twin brother - GLE model (W166), which under the hood may have a four-cylinder bi-tubbo diesel with the tag 250d (150 kW). Coupe offers only 350d, behind whose mark hides the 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo diesel engine, maximum power of 190 kW and maximum torque of 620 Nm. Transmission is something special - nine-9G-Tronic, through which the torque is sent to all four wheels.

Immediately after the engine starts, we noticed its refinement. Vibrations in the neutral mode, simply do not exist, the engine works perfectly harmonious and quiet. When driving, gives the impression of a powerful ally, which will without any problems out of every situation also. The elasticity is high, thanks to a high-speed gearbox, the engine quickly responds to the throttle control. When GLE 350d Coupe is simply impossible to comment on motor without transmission, because this is a perfect blend. Transmission in the normal driving mode always chooses the highest possible gear, sometimes on the verge of 1,000 r / min. There were also comments laity, such as: "What will his nine gears? It's just for the highway?" However, the truth is quite different. Driving along the Ibar highway, with light foot on the gas, transmission is quickly reached the ninth gear and keep the engine speed at the level of about 1,100 r / min, and the speed was about 80 km / h. The objective transmission with 9 gears not achieve higher top speed, but the increased efficiency of the engine. Transmission will be in every situation to find the optimal gear. Suspension

Several basic GLE Coupe offers a two-stage shock absorbers and Agility Control system, which change depending on the characteristics of the depreciation of the compression piston. For an extra charge you can get ultra-comfortable Airmatic - air suspension. Its advantage is not only that you can increase the height of the car up to 255 mm (with standard suspension, ground clearance is 202 mm), but the ability to react faster to rely on the change of surface and reduction of body roll when cornering System (ADS).
