The G Wagen, especially the G63 is more popular than ever in the city it seems.

The G is the only MB model where the AMG versions (G63) is the best selling model in the lineup, at least in the U.S.

I've seen a couple outside Avenues: the world school.

Have you driven one?

I love the G to bits - the looks/presence, the sheer sense of quality, and the course the engine, but horrible steering and NVH has kept me away. A Range Rover may not be not as special, but, objectively, it does everything better.

The best solution to the ride and suspension issue is a Brabus suspension modification, which unfortunately is quite costly. Steering and NVH is much improved on the G500 4x42 & G63 6x6 (judging by some reviews), both assembled by Brabus.

What’s cooler than a G-Wagen with a 621-hp V12?
– Gateway, Colorado

The Mercedes-AMG G65 is a piece of automotive hyperbole. It’s a 30-year-old box initially intended for off-roading, with a massive V12 shoehorned under the hood, because why not? From a handling standpoint, it’s the worst thing Mercedes makes – I’m willing to bet a Toyota Camry could out-maneuver the G65 through a cone course. But to criticize the G-Wagen for its on-road prowess is to miss the point entirely. This car exists simply because it can – it lives because 65 is greater than 63, period. It is the epitome of cool, and it’s like nothing else on the road today. Glory, thy name is Geländewagen, and God bless the G65.

Pros
  • Driving the G65 is equal parts amazing and terrifying. It's got a biturbo 6.0-liter V12 with 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, recirculating ball steering, three locking differentials, and freaking side pipes. It’s engaging in the sense that you’re constantly freaking out about what your wheels are doing, because it’s not evident that the steering wheel is actually connected to anything. I list all this as a positive point, because even through all the weirdness, you’ll never stop smiling. What other V12 vehicle do you know of that could climb a mountain if asked?
  • You’ve got to love the look of the G-Wagen, even in full-on rap-video G65 spec. I’m not sold on the chrome, 21-inch wheels seen here, but picture it in matte gray with some chunky, black rollers, and you’re in business. Also, huge props to Mercedes for offering this thing in more than just monochromatic hues. It’s funny to think the G-Class has perhaps the most expansive color palette of any Mercedes vehicle today.
  • Despite the old-world nature of the G65, it’s still packed with all the latest and greatest Mercedes tech and safety features. Plus, the interior is super comfortable, with seemingly unlimited headroom, cushy seats, a commanding seating position, and the finest materials throughout. It’s downright decadent.
  • A super small detail that I adore: the specific, Germanic click the doors make when they close and lock. Seriously, if you’ve ever securely shut the door of a G-Class, you know the exact sound I’m talking about.
Cons
  • This is the slowest fast car money can buy. You’d think something with this much power could do better than a 5.2-second 0-60 sprint and a top end of 143 miles per hour. Of course, it’s also shaped like a phone booth, so there’s that...
  • My big problem with the G65 is that it’s way, way too quiet. Even the base G550 with its new, biturbo V8 has a better engine and exhaust sound. How are the blind supposed to know you’ve spent $200,000 on the greatest G-Wagen yet?
  • Oh yeah, that’s the other thing. It’s $217,900. And that’s just to start. Play around with some options and exclusive things from the Designo catalog and you can easily pass $240,000. Though I suppose if you’re Oprah rich, it doesn’t really matter. In that case, live up to the true spirit of the G65 – go big or go home.

Review: 2016 Mercedes-AMG G65

Now it's official the G 65 is to be discontinued, as MB Passion had reported earlier. This limited Final Edition of only 65 units worldwide may be very hard to get a hold of, as some rumors allege they may already all be spoken for? :)

The Mercedes-AMG G 65 Final Edition: Powerful and refined

To mark the discontinuation of the Mercedes-AMG G 65 (fuel consumption, combined: 17 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 397 g/km) AMG is offering an exclusive Final Edition, limited to just 65 examples worldwide. The particularly expressive Final Edition reflects the successful story of the world's most powerful series production off-roader. More than a third of all G‑Class vehicles sold worldwide originate from AMG. The G 65 Final Edition is available with immediate effect starting at 310,233 euros*.

The AMG 6.0-litre V12 engine generating 463 kW (630 hp) is totally self-assured. With a maximum torque of 1000 Nm at 2300-4300 rpm, the top-of-the-line V12 engine boasts a unique combination of drive dynamics and smooth running characteristics. The G 65 Final Edition accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 230 km/h (electronically limited).

The V12 biturbo engine with its superior response and powerful sound is unquestionably a highlight in the long, successful story of petrol engines and features a host of top-class technical details. Alongside twin turbochargers it boasts a multi-spark ignition with twelve twin-spark ignition units plus a particularly effective engine management system. The results are optimum combustion, accomplished comfort, maximum efficiency as well as outstanding levels of refinement and power delivery. The high-quality carbon-fibre/aluminium engine cover rounds off the package visually. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G‑TRONIC automatic transmission takes care of the transfer of power to all four wheels.

High ground clearance and long suspension travel form the basis for the excellent off-road characteristics of the Mercedes-AMG G 65. The figures speak for themselves:
  • Slope climbing ability of up to 80% on suitable surfaces
  • Maximum fording depth of 60 cm when driving through water and mud
  • Driving stability at angles of 28°
  • Angle of approach/departure: 27°
  • Breakover angle: 22°
Expressive exterior, high-quality interior

The sporty appearance of the dynamic exterior design of the G 65 Final Edition is underscored by large 21‑inch 5‑twin-spoke light-alloy wheels in bronze, silver brake callipers and AMG Sport trim strips on the sides. Additional highlights come courtesy of features retained in matt bronze such as the underride guard, the trim elements in the bumpers, the wheels and exterior mirrors plus the spare wheel cover in obsidian black with appropriately designed insert. These are complemented by the radiator grille with black mesh screen and surround painted in matt bronze. Running boards and tailpipes are retained in matt black. Inserts in the exterior protective strips in high-gloss black complete the look.

This special model also has a high-quality interior design: the scope of equipment includes the designo Exclusive package in designo black nappa leather with seat side bolsters in a carbon-fibre look and topstitching in light brown. Carbon-fibre trim elements with decorative stitching in bronze, the milled Edition lettering in the grab handle plus floor mats with leather edging in light brown and topstitching in black round off the look. The driver sits behind an AMG Performance steering wheel in black nappa leather featuring a flattened bottom section and excellent grip. Driving is particularly comfortable thanks to the Seat Comfort package including multicontour seats and climatised seats for driver and front passenger.

An off-road legend since 1979

The G-Class has been the top model among luxury off-road vehicles since 1979. It is not only by far the passenger car model series with the longest production run in the history of Mercedes-Benz, but also the forefather of all SUVs to bear the three-pointed star – this is why all Mercedes off-road models feature the upper-case G in their name. Like the entire model series, the G 65 Final Edition will be produced in Graz, primarily in the hand-finishing section of the production facility.

AMG brought a G model onto the market as early as 1979. This was followed in 1999 by the G 55 AMG. Its V8 engine produced 260 kW/354 hp. Although the eight-cylinder engine with a displacement enlarged to 5.5 litres adopted the three-valve technology and dual ignition of the series production unit, it also offered high torque of 525 Nm from 3000 rpm alongside significantly increased output. The G 55 AMG was available with closed roof in short- and long-wheelbase variants and as a cabriolet with a short wheelbase.

In 2012 the family tree was extended. As part of a very comprehensive facelift, the G‑Class was given a completely new exterior. Affalterbach also made some powerful refinements and launched the G 65 AMG into the mix. It incorporated everything the performance-hungry fans of the off-road icon had been dreaming of – such as a 6.0‑litre 12‑cylinder engine with carbon-fibre/aluminium cover. Generating 1000 Nm, the G 65 AMG became the most powerful series production off-road vehicle in the world. The G became an ultra-modern legend, which has since delighted a growing community of fans.

Wow I love it. A fully done G63 and this final edition G65 would be in my fantasy garage for sure. Then I'd head right down to the dealer and place an order for the new G. Detroit is going be something if MB introduces the new G and the AMG GT Sedan at the same time. Geneva will be the C-Class facelift and AMG 53 cars IMO.

The guy has a Point. 230.000$ for this car is just stupid and good marketing. What a bad quality interior.

Mercedes-AMG G65, recalled because it drives too fast in reverse
Elena Luchian , July 30, 2018
This is a recall that might not bother the owners after all! Mercedes is calling back the Mercedes-AMG G65 models because they drive too fast in reverse. The 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 lacks the right software for the limitation of the reverse speed.

To keep the car from speeding backwards, the premium car maker needs to install a device that sets an electronic limitation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports: “These vehicles may be equipped with the incorrect reverse speed limitation software. While in reverse, any abrupt changes in steering while exceeding 16 mph may cause the vehicle to become unstable.”

Therefore, Mercedes needs to make a recall to update the engine control software. The procedure affects all of the 20 vehicles sold in the United States of America.
The Mercedes-AMG G65 is a beast as can be. It is powered by a 6.0-liter V12, that churns out 621 horsepower and 991 Nm of torque, sent to all wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. The boxy SUV rockets from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 5.1 seconds. The monster-G weighs no less than 6,250 pounds (2,835 kilograms), which is approximately half a ton more than its’ slender sibling, the new G63.

In the United States, the starting price of the G65 is of $222,700, a price territory where only SUVs such as the Bentley Bentayga and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan dared to go. The new G though will dismiss the V12, reserved exclusively for the Maybach models from now on.

Mercedes-AMG G65, recalled because it drives too fast in reverse

Will there be a G65 of the new G-Class.

I wonder whether the old generation will receive cult status like the Land Rover defender or whether resale value will sink into the core of the earth.
