Are there any plans for an EQG? Would make a lot of sense for a lot of buyers.

^ Yes. Expected around 2023. :)

Awesome! Love the fact that the G will remain alive. It, along with cars like the 911, Rolls-Royce Phantom etc. are the pillars of the automotive world and should be kept alive as long as possible!

It seems incredible that they do not have the courage to make a new model, although if they give themselves time to design irrational studies and concepts, even JLR, who is practically bankrupt, showed them that it can be done

^ Autocar has an update. :)

Confirmed: Ineos in talks with Daimler to build Grenadier at Smart factory
Ineos could shun Wales and Portugal and use plant in Hambach, western France, to become the manufacturing base for the new Grenadier

Britain's newest car manufacturer, Ineos Automotive, has confirmed that it is negotiating with Daimler to take over the Smart factory at Hambach, western France, as a manufacturing base for its new Grenadier range of 4x4 vehicles.

The factory would be a replacement for both its proposed chassis manufacturing plant in Portugal and its final assembly plant in Bridgend, Wales.

In a statement released this morning, Ineos says it is "reviewing its manufacturing strategy for the new Grenadier in light of the Covid-19 pandemic – which has led to some delays in our development plans, but has also presented some new opportunities in terms of existing manufacturing capacity that were not previously available to us.

“Specifically, Ineos Automotive has entered detailed discussions with Mercedes-Benz on the acquisition of its Hambach site in Moselle, France. We have therefore suspended the post-lockdown resumption of work at our sites in Wales and Portugal pending the outcome of this review. Further updates will follow in the coming weeks.”

It is understood that the possibility of doing a deal only arose over the past few days and a major attraction is the fact that Daimler has equipped the Hambach plant fairly recently to build a larger SUV model, alongside the Smart two-seat city cars that have always been its main output. This would suit the Grenadier manufacturing process, meaning the Hambach deal is the one most likely to be concluded.

Ineos cites “significant overcapacity” in the automotive production sector, made clearer during the pandemic, as being the main factor for the decision.

Ineos Automotive CEO, Dirk Heilmann, elaborated: “Of course we considered this route previously, but as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic some new options such as this one with the plant in Hambach have opened up that were simply not available to us previously. We are therefore having another look – and reviewing whether the addition of two new manufacturing facilities is the right thing to do in the current environment.”

“Covid has had an impact on our build schedules,” added Heilmann, “with ground clearing works and construction held up by the social distancing measures that have been required. Safety is of course paramount, but we also have an obligation to do what is right for the business – and so need to assess these new opportunities in order to maintain or improve on our timelines.”

Last week the first minister for Wales told BBC News that his team “remain in discussion with the company” over bringing the Grenadier manufacturing site to Bridgend, creating up to 500 jobs. However, there had been no formal announcement at that point, despite Ineos confirming last year its intention to base the 4x4’s finishing plant near the site of the soon-to-close Ford engine plant in Bridgend, going as far as rendering the finished building.

Update makes Mercedes-Benz G-Class even more desirable
Iconic off-road vehicle with more equipment and scope for greater personalisation available to order now

Stuttgart/Affalterbach. The G-Class is continuing its over 40-year success story: From the manufacturing date 1 September 2020, the standard equipment for the iconic off-road vehicle is even more extensive. At the same time, there are also more personalisation options available through the G manufaktur programme. New exterior colours and equipment packages as well as the widescreen cockpit, which now comes as standard, round out the offering. The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class is now available to order at prices from 99,446.80 to 102,694.80 euros[1], while the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 (combined fuel consumption: 14.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 330 g/km)[2] comes in at a price of 154,309.00 euros.

The most important new aspect: Previously featuring restricted availability, the G 400 d (combined fuel consumption: 8.9-8.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 235-229 g/km)1 is now freely configurable and available without restriction because the previous special model has been discontinued. The most powerful configuration level of the in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 243 kW (330 hp) and maximum torque of 700 Nm at 1200 to 3200 rpm delivers propulsion befitting its status, even under tough off-road conditions.

Functional enhancements also come courtesy of the new "Desert" drive program. It is activated via the DYNAMIC SELECT rocker switch and is designed for maximum traction on sandy terrain. The perfect interplay of late upshifting, direct throttle response and adjusted ESP® control predestines the G-Class even more to be a desert champion. What is more, the Parking Package with reversing camera is now part of the standard equipment, helping the G-Class to cut a fine figure on any terrain.

The update also includes comprehensive scope for personalisation to suit individual wishes. For example, the often-requested Night Package can now be ordered without the AMG Line and Stainless Steel Package. It comprises heat-insulating dark-tinted glass, outside mirror housings and radiator grille (including louvres with the surround of the Mercedes star) in obsidian black metallic, as well as darkened turn signal lamps, reversing lamps and headlamps. If the G-Class is ordered with a matt magno paint finish, the package can be configured as the Night Package magno. In this case, the corresponding add-on parts come in the colour night black magno. The Stainless Steel Package continues to be available with spare wheel cover, running boards, door sills and loading sill protection in stainless steel and adds a painted spare wheel ring and an exterior protective strip with trim insert in a pinstripe look to the Night Packages.

The new 20-inch 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheel available exclusively for the AMG Line has a high-sheen finish and is painted in a choice of high-gloss black or himalaya grey.

Vehicle interior now with widescreen cockpit as standard

From now on, the widescreen cockpit is part of the standard equipment in all G-Class models and sets a clear technological tone in terms of the aesthetics. The frameless inside rearview mirror, previously part of the Leather Packages, now also enhances the standard equipment specification. The interior of the G-Class undergoes further upgrading when one of the Interior Packages is selected: The switches for the window lifters then come in silver chrome and the sun visors in DINAMICA microfibre. Black floor mats are also now on board as standard. In conjunction with the AMG Line, floor mats bearing the AMG logo adorn the floor of the G-Class – the same floor mats that are also found in the Mercedes-AMG G 63.

Greater anti-theft protection is provided by the new equipment packages URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection and URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection Plus. They replace the previous break-in and anti-theft alarm system. URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection includes:

  • Anti-theft alarm system
  • Tow-away protection with visual and audible warning when a change in position is detected
  • Alarm siren
  • Interior protection (triggered when there is movement in the interior)
  • Theft and parking collision detection, can be used free of charge for three years from activation
  • URBAN GUARD label on the front side windows
In addition, URBAN GUARD Vehicle Protection Plus includes pinpointing the location of a stolen vehicle. This service is free of charge for three years from activation (only with Mercedes me connect) and is scheduled to be available from the fourth quarter of 2020.

Rich diversity: new G manufaktur offerings

The G manufaktur programme provides an almost unlimited variety of personalisation options. Here too choice has been extended. For example, three new solid paint colours G manufaktur classic grey uni, G manufaktur deep green uni and G manufaktur china blue uni evoke reminders of legendary exterior colours from 40 years of the G-Class. For the new Night Package magno, G manufaktur offers additional accents in black: a spare wheel ring painted in night black magno as well as bumpers and wheel arch extensions in the same colour. In selected countries, a body-styling bar is also available in night black magno.

The G manufaktur programme exclusively includes the Night Package II and the AMG Night Package II – each in conjunction with the Night Packages of the standard model designations. Night Package II includes:

  • Mercedes star at the front and rear in high-gloss black
  • "V8" lettering on the front wings in high-gloss black
  • Model badge at the rear in high-gloss black
The AMG Night Package II includes:

  • Mercedes star at the front and rear in high-gloss black
  • AMG lettering on the radiator grille and at the rear in high-gloss black
  • "V8 BITURBO" lettering on the front wings in high-gloss black
  • Model badge at the rear in high-gloss black
The bumpers and wheel arch extensions in obsidian black metallic as well as the roof painted in the same colour are now available separately too in conjunction with the Night Package. It continues to be the case that all personalisation with G manufaktur is embedded in the production process, meaning that vehicles can be delivered without delay.

2021 Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4×4² Spied Undisguised, Looks Every Bit As Extreme As The Original

mercedes-amg-g550-4x4-2-7.webp

Just a couple of months after our first fuzzy sighting of the new Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4×4² and our man with the long lens was finally able to get a clear shot of the wildest version of the SUV so far. Beyond concealing its front and rear logos, the muscled up G-Class has nothing else to hide providing us with an early look at the new model ahead of its expected debut later this year.

The Mercedes-Benz G500 / G550 4×4² won’t remain a one-off as these fresh spy shots suggest a successor to the extremely capable off-roader is on the way.

Mercedes-AMG plans to release a new 4×4² model based on the latest-generation G-Class and these are the first clear images of the new model. The next-generation G500 / G550 4×4² doesn’t seem like a big secret anymore as our photographers were able to shoot it from a close distance this time.

It’s pretty clear we’re looking at the new G-Class 4×4² as the undisguised prototype features portal axles and massive wheels for a huge ground clearance. In addition, it looks very similar to its predecessor minus the all-new LED headlights and taillights, and the redesigned interior.

These photos do not provide us with a look inside the cabin but they do show that Mercedes is testing accessories such as the massive roof rack with two integrated LED light bars at the front, a rear-mounted spare wheel and who knows what else.

Other changes compared to the regular 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class include the extra-wide wheel arches and side steps, as well as new front and rear bumpers – with a steel extension at the back. It remains to be seen whether the automaker will continue to badge the off-roader as the G500 4×4² in Europe and G550 4×4² in North America or switch to a Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4² designation.

There’s no official information regarding the powertrain but we all know it’s going to feature the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 unit found in most Mercedes-AMG models nowadays. The only question is the power plant’s state of tune. In the previous-generation model, the 4.0-liter V8 made 425 PS (416 HP) and 610 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque.

That’s exactly what the current G500 / G550 makes but wouldn’t it be more appropriate for the new 4×4² range-topper to get the G63’s version of the 4.0-liter V8 that makes 585 PS (577 HP) and 849 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque?
