G-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz G-Class (W464)

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.

Yeah it's just too difficult to understand the flawed logic of a modified ICE. But go ahead talking about the boxy shape, which is the least of the problems this car has.
Like I said the original response went right over your head so you're in the weeds now. Plot lost.

You can make a car look modern , yet , timeless , at the same time.

There are examples , like 992.

Its design has nothing to do with it. They could have come with a bespoke class leading EV platform and put the exact G visual shape on top of it. It would then weigh 2000 kg instead of 3000 kg, and it would be competitive with actual EVs on all fronts.
Sunny is talking about the whole technical part of the endeavor, not the design of the shell.

I like the G Wagon more than the average MB fanboy in this thread, just to be clear.
And I also have no problem with this new EV tank at all, other than a few visuals which seem easy to swap out for ICE parts (grille/headlight casing)
G class has never had a competition problem.

If you make a 2000 kg electric G class, it will not be a G class. It's a small car.

There are comments full of nonsense. Approaching the G class with an EV efficiency philosophy is nonsense. It's an iconic car and a rich man's toy. Nobody is interested in its efficiency or performance. Has anyone seen such comments about Rolls Royce Spectre? Does it have an EV platform? When a Mercedes at a level that BMW cannot reach is released, this type of smear actions begin. It's illogical.

Yeah normally I wouldn’t agree but the G seems to bring out a lot of ridiculous comments.

I could care less about how much BMW sucks ass, so cut that crap.

The G class offered unrivaled off road capability for a SUV. It build it's reputation on that capability and became a status symbol. This electric G, on the other hand, is a half assed effort. It is no different from BMW screwing a battery to 5er and calling it i5.

And it is not about just efficiency or performance. There is not a single objective measure I could find it betters a Rivian - I can rat it off again - it weighs the same, but it seats less, it carries less, it tows zero!, it's way slower, has way less range, has less ground clearance, has less wading depth...

As a fan of the brand, how the f#ck are you guys okay with this? It is not some preordained thing. It is people being f#cking lazy and and making a sub par vehicle and slapping your favorite brand's name on it. You should be mad at them, not me. If Porsche made an electric 911 by screwing a battery to a ICE 911, I would be so disappointed.

But that is the sad part, I am sure everyone here knows this, but rather just blindly cheer a shitty product and make silly excuses about how it is okay to be shitty, cause of some stupid sense of misplaced brand loyalty.

You can get better off roading ability, wading depth, efficiency in a Wrangler or Bronco right now compared to a base G550. Why isn't this logic applied to the gas G models vs the competition? A G has always been more of a subjective purchase and I'm pretty sure you know this. Who buys a G for it's spec sheet?

The only reason you are applying this logic to the EV version is because of your bias for EVs. So the G now needs more seats? Since when? It never sat more than 5 people. Who was using a G550 or G63 to tow anything? Rivian doesn't call the shots.

The G-class doesn't need to strive to be a true EV. It's not an ordinary car. No market concerns, no high sales volume. It is enough to maintain its off-road capabilities and not lose its identity. Nobody wants to compare it to Rivian. Those who will buy it do not have such an expectation.

I gave the Rolls Royce example above. Who cares if it's an EV platform? This is not a 5 series.

Your point seems to be "It will be successful cause it is a G, so it is okay it is sub par". Right? My counter point is,
a. as a fan, you should still expect better. I am sure you would have been proud and cheering if the electric G bettered other electric SUVs in range/power/off road/towing ability etc.
b. there is no guarantee it will continue to enjoy success once the pattern of mediocrity is established.

b. there is no guarantee, it will continue to enjoy success once the pattern of mediocrity is established.

Because its range sucks we might see this G having same fate of EQS, Taycan, etc. depreciating like a rock, so in 3 years is half price.
But I understand Mercedes thinking, this is a niche car so developing a new G platform is not profitable or it will make this thing cost from 200k.

Why does class g have to be efficient? To prove what? The G class has never been the most efficient, most technological, most performing off-road vehicle. He's in a league of his own. He doesn't have such problems. Don't criticize without knowing his philosophy. Nobody cares if it offers a range of 1000 km or accelerates to 100 km/h in 3 seconds.

The gasoline G doesn't better every other gasoline SUV in range/power/off road/towing now, so again why should the EV version?

Because electric cars especially during winter (when G owners go to St. Moritz/Courchevel) lose 30% of range. Waiting 30 minutes to charge a big battery at low speed is not nice.
The only advantage of the electric G is in high tax for countries like Netherlands, Denmark.
