G-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz G-Class Facelift (W463)

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.
The only thing temporary on those prototype are the camo, the body is production ready and it will looks like the current generation.

Which makes me extremely happy. A 40 year old car with cutting edge interior or the highest quality. This really is a dream.

Wait, have I just read the old exterior is just temporal? If so I am glad they are going after a more forward looking exterior. The concept they showed a few years ago could be a noce base.

Tough thing to do replacing this car. So many years looking the same.

They are not going to change the looks other than the new proportions. +10 cm wider is huge. It will be instantly visible.

Assuming the body is indeed production ready, I am a bit surprised that they have kept the windscreen perfectly flat. I would have thought that they would introduce a bit of curvature because flat screens can be prone to mildly distracting full-width reflections in certain light conditions.

But those flat surfaces and strong chiseled sillouette are what make the G Class unique, and timeless.

Big news...cant believe theyre actually going ahead with this after years of speculation. It would surely be a sizeable task to develop this new G since the old one has a huge legacy.

Normally I couldn't care less about SUV's but the G has left a lasting impact on almost all of us car nuts. Would be great to see what they come out with given these mules are merely masked versions of todays model.

I just wet my pants.

Excellent news, and it looks like they haven't wrecked it.

jesmb is reporting 10cm wider and extensive use of aluminium to cut down on weight. Led lights.

I bet they'll also improve the turning circle (needed)

Next-gen G-Class spied outside the gates, looks wider

The iconic off-roader will live to see another generation and will remain as boxy as ever.

Mercedes-Benz is smart enough to know it has a winning recipe with the legendary G-Class which is why for the next installment of the G-wagen the shape will remain just about the same. All the camouflage in the world can’t hide the boxy shape of the vehicle which is set to receive a considerably wider body. That may not be as obvious in the attached pics, but our spies are estimating an increase in width of around 10 centimeters (almost 4 inches).

While in the previous batch of spy images the prototype was seen behind a fence on a private property, now we bring pics of the vehicle while it was undergoing testing on public roads. Some would be tempted to say the new version will only be a facelift for the nearly 40-year-old G-Class, but in reality it’s pretty much going to be a new car. The switch to a different, more modern platform is estimated to shave off up to 900 pounds (408 kilograms), even though the new model will have a larger footprint.

In order to keep the tradition alive, the iconic SUV will continue to be assembled by Magna in Graz, Austria and it is expected one of the engines on offer will be Mercedes-AMG’s biturbo 4.0-liter V8. The new unit corroborated with a significantly lower curb weight will allow the new G-Class to be considerably more efficient, but at the end of the day that won’t really matter for prospect buyers.

It’s too soon to say when Mercedes will launch it, but taking into account there was no sign of a G-Class in the recently published 2017 roadmap, it means we should not expect it before the first half of 2018. It will definitely be well worth the wait and the Geländewagen will likely be out around the time when Land Rover will bring back the Defender, another off-roader with a lot of history behind it.

Fantastic. These new proportions look good on it.

Can't wait to see more of the interior though! That's going to be something!

Looks a good deal wider and somewhat shorter. That should ease but not eliminate that "it will tip over feeling" of the current one. The interior will finally be much closer to new Mercedes' also. This wasn't mentioned in the leaked product offensive, but it is clearly coming in 2017.

It looks like they decided to go with independent front suspension. They got rid of one of the major things that made the G-class stand out. Now it will just be another Escalade...

That's more than a bit dramatic. Even if they did ditch the live front axle, this will be dramatically more capable than the Escalade.

I highly doubt it's any shorter.

I believe it's both wider and longer as they wanted more legroom in the interior and width.
