It is known that the Vision Iconic was not met with universal praise or enthusiasm. In fact, it was often lambasted by Europe-based professional design critics. Most common peeve: Pretentiously "neo-retro" and almost "arrogantly reactionary and a celebration of the archaic". Perhaps the Vision Iconic is indeed a design icon in the eyes of diehard, self-perceived "traditionalist" M-B brand aficionados.

I have no idea how it was received in North America or China by design professionals. But in the end, it does not matter. In essence, the Vision Iconic amounts to little more than a sort of circle jerk for an extremely limited audience.

Never read or heard such a thing maybe some links will help from what I remember reading all journos loved the concept and the people who saw it

Respectfully, the only person I've seen say this, is you.

Haggerty on the Vision Iconic:

Not overwhelmingly enthusiastic review by Motion Magazine. :
Otherwise, I would suggest researching social media a bit more thoroughly:

Continuing the Vision Iconic topic:

german-design-council.de is a source worth researching. The "Out of Shape" article pertaining, in part, to German automotive design, is enlightening.

Here, an excerpt of an article in Vision-Mobility.de:

Vision Iconic: This Mercedes divides the design world
Rarely have opinions on a design study been as divergent as those surrounding the Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic. German-language media, in particular, condemn it as a dark "Darth Vader" car, often referencing the pre-war era, while Asia and the USA, especially, celebrate its rediscovered classic appeal. The truth, as so often, lies somewhere in between. At the Car Design Event 2026 in Munich, we certainly gained some insights that offer a more nuanced perspective.*

Sorry to rain on the dedicated M-B aficionado pep rally. Or be the toxic agent that taints the automotive fantasies of some individuals.

But, I'm genuinely glad to see that touching some sensitive nerves and shaking the foundations of "fanpersonism" are getting a discussion going. That's good.

...and quoting Auto Motor und Sport:
"Conclusion
With the Vision Iconic, Mercedes proves that technological acceptance is not just a matter of function – but also of form. Familiar design makes abstract innovation tangible. Progress seems less threatening when it appears in the guise of memory." *

Pretty much the very definition of "neo-retroistic reactionism". IMHO, destined not only to be exposed to the risks of appearing caricaturesque, but also aging like fine milk. "Looking Back" does not appear a sound strategy to me. It's driving into the future with eyes fixed firmly on the rearview mirror.

I must admit, this is entertaining.

Again. With the greatest of respect. Most of the citations you've made, don't actually dislike the design of it.
The most scathing, was Hagerty, which dislikes the idea behind the design, but still thinks it's good-looking. The author claims that the Lucid Air is the most cohesively designed EV, which is certainly a unique taste, cause I think it looks ok, but entirely anonymous.

You're entitled to your opinion of course. You don't like "retro future". And that's cool.
You're not really raining on anyone's parade.

I'm sure I could go to the comment section of TopGear.com and find a bunch of miserable people who don't like the iX3s design. But who actually cares?

So you mized all 98% Positive articles about the Vision Iconic & chose 3 made by haters of Mercedes?😂

So the whole world loves it? USA & Asia are pretty Big you know?🤷‍♂️

So first comment is of someone loving the Vision Iconic to the point they wish it could turn out exactly like that?🤣

May i ask you a question sir?
DO YOU HATE MERCEDES?🤔
Give it a rest mate. It's not that serious

But who actually cares?

Stimulating discussion is what matters. Learning...hopefully contributing constructively...evoking contemplation and catching interesting different drifts, etc. That's what it's about. The rest is simply sundry, often banter with some occasional bluster added. With a laugh or two as well.

Insinuation that someone "hates" a certain brand is often simply an indication that the concepts of "hate" and "concern" are being recklessly comminged.

Being German, I would love to see Mercedes-Benz succeed in all aspects of its endeavors. To the benefit of the products, the company's employees, the consumer and my country's currently very shaky economy. The company's competence in terms of engineering and innovative technologies is immense. Sadly, IMHO much of it has not been applied optimally in more recent times, hence making M-B appear "a bit lost". IMHO, BMW has had a far better grasp of this more recently. And the Volkswagen brand, most recently, has been impressing me with it's newly found focus. It's Skoda subsidiary is, in fact, damn impressive.

Dopebouy seems to be leylandi’s newer version, lol. Just another eccentric fanatic.

It was inevitable. He wasn’t even a Mercedes fan at that point, just a lunatic. Now he’s sending me all the negative stuff about Bimmers to my personal Instagram account, lol. Weird. It’s mind boggling to me that someone can be that obsessive with a f*cking car brand.
