You raise good points, but points that are not necessarily associated with a "typical" (ie Sacco-era) Mercedes. Those, recognized as some of the best MBs, are neither refined, nor elegant, nor warm inside. Nor have a dubious technic making it prone to breakdowns.
In that sense, for me, the W212 is a return to the traditional values, while the W211 was a clear departure from the tyical E-Class, a departure I never appreciated.
I prefer an interior which might look a bit too rude but seems built to last forever, than an elegant interior that doesn't really evoke strength or durability.
But that's only me.
BTW, I lived in France few months ago (where the Coupe has been available from the start), and am now living in Romania (where the E Coupe is also available). In the US however it was available quite later, wasn't it?
Yup, clearly we love the brand for different reason (mostly, I love the 80's models too).

My Dad had a 300SD and a Rolls Royce Silver Spirit when I was a little kid. I HATED the Benz, and LOVED the Rolls, and even then, appreciated that ultra fancy, coddling interior (of the Rolls). I remembered the smell, the carpeting, the fancy wool-ish material all along the interior pillars and headliner, The 211 reminded me a bit of that approach, I think the fact that my E isn't my DD, I'm not worried so much about durability, and about the fact that all those fancy carpeting (where the 212 uses more durable plastic) would stain and get ruined if I spill something, I guess I just appreciate the elegance to me when I get in it.
Exterior styling wise, although the 212 definitely embarks on entirely new lines and styling gimmicks never seen before on a Benz (some people say the 212 reminds them of the 124, however if you look at the 124's lines, etc. they are clearly far more represented and evolved/smoothed over in the 211). I do get that the 212 brings back that "spirit" of the 80's models, and M-B did do a good job of getting that point across and making it obvious that it was the direction they were going in. I love the 211 because I feel the design is as timeless as a modern M-B will get, and really the last of their "traditional" designs (in the understated sense, and following certain lines-themes). I feel the 211 represents the smoother design approach of the pre-80's Benzes, which are my personal favs, so maybe that's why I like it so much as well.
To each their (our) own, hehe.

Yeah, here the Coupe definitely came out right with the Sedan, my first few new E's I saw were all Coupes.
Interestingly, if you run a Search in the U.S AutoTrader, there are LOTS of slightly Uses Coupes for Sale, at much cheaper prices than the Sedan.
I think this is a definite sign that the Coupes will depreciate faster.

Will be fantastic - the combination of the beauty scenery and your new car!
