A-Class (W176) [Official] Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG

The W176 model was introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show officially as a subcompact executive / C-segment model for the first time after being a supermini / B-segment for fifteen years.

Standard version will have 381 PS

We have stumbled upon an image which apparently shows the facelifted Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG.

The styling revisions were kept down to a minimum as we only notice the additional fins on the bumper, revised vents with glossy black surrounds also applied onto the gills while the lower front grille appears to have a slightly different layout. There could be some changes to the headlight graphics and upper grille but it's hard to tell from this image which seems to be taken from a magazine.

More importantly, the person who uploaded the pic on Instagram says Mercedes-Benz will offer the A45 AMG facelift in a standard version with 381 PS (280 kW) along with a beefier S model that will pack a mighty 400 PS (294 kW) punch. We've known for quite some time Mercedes was working on a power boost for the current 360 PS A45 AMG in order to dethrone the 367 PS Audi RS3 and reclaim the power hatch crown, but we weren't aware the jump in output was this significant.

A full reveal of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class facelift should occur in the coming weeks, with a public debut set for September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

On the outside it looks pretty much like a stock A45 AMG, but hiding underneath the familiar skin is a true beast with a lot of extra power. This is in fact the pre-facelift model as the Edition 1 was available only during the first 12 months of the A45’s production.

It still has the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but POSAIDON has extracted no less than 485 horsepower and an electronically-limited 410 pound-feet of torque. This was possible by upgrading the turbocharger and optimizing the air intake, while the cooling and gearbox also required some work to handle all the power.

As a result of the added punch, the A45 AMG Edition 1 is now capable of reaching a top speed of 193 miles per hour (310 kilometers per hour). There’s no word about the 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) performance, but it could be around the four-second mark. We are making this estimation taking into account the facelifted 381-hp A45 needs 4.2 seconds before it tops out at a limited 168 mph (270 kph) when fitted with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.

A stronger engine requires additional stopping power which is why POSAIDON is willing to upgrade the original braking system or install its own custom kit. The tuner can also deactivate the start/stop system if you consider it’s annoying and don’t really care about that extra mpg it brings during city driving.

No brainer,I prefer the RS3,it looks better in my eyes, certainly sounds better. Finally it offers both a superior drivetrain and suspension set up.

It’s Official: New Mercedes-AMG A45 Getting Drift Mode, 8sp Dual Clutch Transmission

Mercedes-AMG are stepping up their game with the all-new A45 that’s currently in the development phase.

The super hot hatch will welcome a few major upgrades compared to the outgoing model, including a Drift mode, which was confirmed to journalists present at the 2018 Paris Auto Show by the AMG boss, Tobias Moers, reports CarAdvice.

“Okay, you can go sideways with it”, said the Affalterbach-based performance brand’s chief when asked about the then rumored Drift mode. The technology is expected to be controlled by a computer, just like in the larger E63, which should make drifting easy to anyone sitting behind the wheel.

Moers also revealed another novelty for the upcoming Mercedes-AMG A45: the addition of a dual-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission, unlike the current iteration and its seven-speed auto. “Yes, it’s a dual-clutch eight-speed. The A35 is a seven-speed, the 45 will have an eight-speed.”

The 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive will remain standard, and together with the tuned chassis, should make the A45 a peach around corners. “The chassis compared to today is unbelievable. We have various suspension in the car, and it’s an improvement in every perspective. There’s more comfort, more rigidity in every way, so we put a lot of effort into the body in white. There’s lots of reinforcement and it fits perfectly”, Tobias Moers added.

Power wise, the car will remain one of the kings of the segment, with more than 400 hp produced by a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. In a previous statement, the AMG boss said that every component of the powertrain is new and perfectly tuned, admitting that he’s “not a fan of over-powered cars”.

One final upgrade that will put more distance between the A45 and the regular models, in addition to the more aerodynamic exterior and extra work inside, will be the MBUX infotainment system. The feature will benefit from “a dedicated super sport kind of screen”, providing drivers with all the required performance information.

The ‘45’ moniker will make its way to the Sedan version of the new A-Class, too, which is the one coming to the United States. If recent reports turn out to be correct, then a more track-focused version of both cars, presumably named the Mercedes-AMG A45S or A50, will sit at the top of the range.

No contest. The A45S is an absolute weapon. I cannot wait for its engine to make it into a C-Class, mated to an electric motor.

Despite being an FWD hatchback, the new A45S has the respect of many journalists and car fans.

I too can't wait to see this engine in the next C-Class, just not as replacement for the V8 C63. Such a thing would be completely unacceptable. A C45, C53 and C63 would be too much, I4, I6 and V8. Maybe a C45 would take the place of the current V6 C43, that would make the V8 C63 safe, but that would leave out the I6. I just hope they get this right with a balance for people who don't want a 4-cylinder, no matter how much power it makes.

After owning several 6 cylinder BMWs I have a very hard time enjoying a four cylinder. I'm completely spoiled. When driving a six I was always hitting the rev limiter, just because the engine was so smooth and you feel you can't put strain on it. With four cylinder cars the more you push it the more you feel pity for the car.
Is there a difference in your drive style when you drive your M140i and the four cylinder X3?

4 cylinders have come along way and are very competent except if you value noise or seek refinement and muscle above 50mph.

If you are not a car enthusiast and drove M140i and X3 20i back to back around town, you wouldn't know that the M140i has beefier engine. The B58 is docile as a domestic rabbit because the programming of the ZF8 is biased towards keeping emissions and fuel consumption low. Last month I even averaged 41mpg during a 50min drive.

By default, gearshifts are programmed to keep engine revs between 1-1.5k rpm in both Comfort and Sport mode. Put the gearbox into sport mode and engine revs are just under 2k rpm.

Where the B58 shows its true character is between 4-6.5k RPM. Throttle response is sharp, noise is louder and with full torque torque still available the engine is like wild boar begging you to spank it. It an exhilarating rev band. You can hit triple 100-120mph without trying hard.

You have to take control of the engine by shifting manually in order to keep the engine above 4k rpm. When going for spirited drives I take control of the engine by shifting manually. My other half and her dad who also drive the car never bother shifting manually let alone activating sport mode. However, they still love driving the M140i because the power potential of the engine is present throughout the rev range.

Although 4 cylinder engines sound strained high up the rev range, they are powerful and well rounded if you never push the engine. A two years ago I drove a 1.4TSI DSG Skoda Octavia and was blown away by how smooth and quiet it was. On the other hand the B58 is exceptionally versatile and can be frugal, smooth as powerful Diesel engine or ferocious like a racing engine.

Basically, 4 cylinder engines are good.........but bigger engines can be more emotionally rewarding. :D

A 4-cylinder will never equal the experience, refinement of effortlessness of a good I6 or V8 doesn't matter what you do to it. It will never happen. BMW and Mercedes prove that within their own lineups.

It's possible with torque fill from an electric motor however that comes with a big weight penalty. The prospect of a 1,800kg/4,000lb C-Class makes me shrug.

Nah. You're talking about numbers, I'm talking NVH and refinement and the way the power is delivered. It will never match a V8. BMW makes the best 4-cylinder I've ever driven in their 530i, 330i etc models and then you drive a 540i and see a clear leap in refinement of their I6 which is still likely the best in the business. 4-cylinders drone and sound like they're dying when you drive them hard and they growl in protest once you're stopped. An I6 or V8 does not do that.

M

It's all about mechanical balance and harmony, which an inline 4 just doesn't have compared to a six.

I remember a friend of mine had an E46 330i in 2002 and I was literally blown away with how smooth and quiet the inline 6 was right up to the redline, yet it had a wonderful raspy sound at the same time and fantastic power. After hopping into my 4cylinder Opel Corsa GSi, the engine in my car was so much louder and no where near as smooth as the BMW even at idle it was noisier than the 330i was singing at 6000rpm. Without a doubt for noise, NVH, refinement and emotional experience a 4cylinder engine will never match a six, eight or 12 cylinder engine.
