AMG ONE [Official] Mercedes-AMG Project ONE

The Mercedes-AMG One (R50, previously known as Project One) is a limited-production plug-in dual hybrid sports car manufactured by Mercedes-AMG, featuring Formula One-derived technology. Production: August 2022 – 2025 (275 units planned).
Do ppl remember when MB released the specs and they said ring in under 6:30, 100/200 kph in under 2.5/6 seconds?. It comes out 3800 pounds. Misses every acceleration target by a lot (7 to 200!), Isn’t going to be registered in the US. Requires a $850k euro engine rebuild every so often thousand miles. Am I also correct in that it only revs to 9k RPM? A 458 did that over a decade ago. The three hybrids would run with this thing and be more reliable, cheaper to run and be US registerable a decade ago. Where’s the progress? And think about the amount of money MB spent for this stupid project that has zero carryover to their other programs. They aren’t using an F1 engine in anything else. It’s just bad all the way around.

I do not agree at all. For what it sought to be, this is a great success. It is a hyper car among hypercars from the looks and sound, and I have the feeling we will see this car put some excellent numbers. It’s 1.6L v6 is no more ridiculous to me than an 8.0L W16 Bugatti.

I would hope Mercedes-AMG uses this car as a lab of sorts to make a second generation mid-engine hyper car that perhaps has a more sensible engine like a 4L v8 with between 730 and 800 hp, with maybe next generation electric assistance.

There is nothing like this on the road currently, at least to these eyes. For the owners who will get one, this will be exactly what they sought, a sound investment that will quadruple in value every 10 or so years.

this post is quite confusing to me.

paragraph by paragraph,

1. I have a feeling we won’t see the cars putting down any numbers with how fragile it appears to be and the cost of the rebuild

2. MB didn’t need this car to figure out how to do a mild hybrid with 800 hp. Certainly not at its tremendous expense.

3. just because something exists, doesn’t mean it’s existence is necessarily a good thing. I’d take any of the holy trinity over this car and they’re 10 years old. This thing didn’t move the performance needle forward. It’s just a novelty item.

Well, this topic misses the whole idea of the AMG ONE/AMG1.

F1 cars don’t have the fastest acceleration at all, its much easier to have rapid acceleration with only electrical powertrain.

Although AMG1 numbers are not that impressive, but the car promised to introduce the latest F1 tech in a street legal car, while it was almost impossible for them to achieve it (yes they were excited about their 5/6 years of victory) and obviously they over promised, they struggled to make this car legal and useable on daily basis. I'm sure that the 275 buyers were well aware about that.

@Matski Formula 1 V10 and V8 engines were much more interesting and ultimately more powerful than the 1.6 V6 which needs a lot of assistance to deliver close numbers to its predecessors. But this is not what F1 objective in the modern days, they continuously developed these cars to be the most efficient ICE configuration ( I read its about 50% in efficiency).

I hate hybrid configuration overall, they are heavy and prone to many mechanical/electrical failures, but the fact is they do save a lot in overall energy consumption/waste/recovery.

I love how unique this car looks, and the power train is interesting. Performance numbers don’t bother me, but weight bothers me a lot honestly.

11k rpm

They kinda do... 100-200km/h in about 2s. Electrical motors have a slight traction advantage because you can modulate their power much faster, but this is worth only maybe 0.1-0.2s. Apart from that, if you are looking at the best power to weight ratio, ICE engines will have the advantage, apart from disciplines where the race duration is minimal (drag race, hill climb). Go longer than that and the battery will have to become very large and heavy, bringing the PS/t far below an ICE powered car.
Not the slightest chance. This is a one-off and Mercedes is extremely happy they're done with it. The tech will never ever go to any other car.
Well, apart from the engine, there really is no other tech that is unique to the AMG One. The battery they are using, for example, is the exact same one they developed for all their other hybrid cars. The brakes and calipers are the same as in the AMG GTs. It does have an automated manual that is unique to the car, but they have no reason to use that on any other car. Maybe they could use some of the pre-heated catalyst technology to meet future emission standards, but that's about it.

Some potential owners dissapointed.

Totally understandable. I myself have not ordered the car, and I will probably never even seeing the car, but I also feel pissed off.

Maybe some ideas that sound great in a beer garden after a few pitchers may not sound so great the next day. ;)

Trust me, I should know. I have garage full of "hot dog phones" since the mid-Aughts! :D

How can an owner not be disappointed? The original brief was for a wild looking car with an F1 wail and potentially the greatest performance ever. The result was still wild looking but mediocre sound (I think poor) and slower performance than cars that cost 20% as much (and sound better). The interior is a mess. It was always a mess. The running costs are astronomical. It was years late to the market. It's just a fail. but, oh well. I guess I'm glad it exists. I don't play in the hypercar realm but they're all cool in their special way. Even the crap ones....

it was rumoured to have 1200hp, it got delivered with only 1063hp, i guess going with more powerful electrical engines would've drained the battery quicker so it wasn't an option, the speedtail for comparison is a hyperGT with the singleminded goal of being as slippery as possible and produces 1036hp

it was rumoured to be 1100kg-1300kg, it ended up being 1700+kg, underselling the weight is very common in hybrid supercars but this was a lot of weight and if there's one thing F1 teams know it's how to save weight

it was said to do 0-200 in less than 6 seconds, being realistic i would expect a low 6, it ended up equal to other hypercars before it, by no means slow, but an overpromise and underdelivery (realistic possibly low 7)
