Enjoy seeing what the track-focused coupe can do before it goes on sale.

With 577 horsepower (430 kilowatts) and 516 pound-feet (699 Newton meter) of torque from its biturbo 4.0-liter V8 there’s little doubt that the Mercedes-AMG GT R is an impressive machine, but European customers don’t get to experience the power until November. There’s an even longer wait for those in the United States. If you want to get a better look at the race-inspired coupe's capabilities now check out this clip of the R lapping the Nürburgring. This is also an opportunity to see how it handles more sedate driving while commuting back from the famous racecourse.

This black GT R looks fantastic on the track. It appears to handle the ‘Rings famous corners with ease. We wish the exhaust note were a little more bombastic, but getting a stirring sound out of a turbocharged engine can be a challenge.

Despite race-inspired parts like the big diffuser and road-hugging front splitter, the GT R looks fairly docile off the road. Like on the track, it doesn’t make much sound. The track-ready coupe appears to be able to give drivers a somewhat comfortable ride home after a day at the circuit.

While the GT R appears easy to drive, getting one might be a challenge. According to a recent rumor, the company might limit production to just 2,000 examples as a strategy to make the model more exclusive.

I wonder if the top speed of 318km/h on the GT R is limited just as the GT S is limited to 310km/h as Mercedes mentions the GT R has a better aero CD factor and its got much more power (75PS increase) which surely will increase the top speed by more than just 8km/h. I reckon it should do 325 to 330km/h true max. speed.

Hi,

In my opinion this poor sound will be the sound for AMG GT R´s with EU specification. As you can see there are no pipes in the rear diffusor beside the main exhaust anymore, like the Goodwood AMG GT R had! This is why this car sounds like that, even with full throttle. In the EU there is a new law since 01. july 2016. And this law means that it´s not allowed anymore to produce all new cars with more than 75 dB, even no sportscars like AMG GT R, Ferrari, Lamborghini as well...so each car that has to be homologized after 01. July 2016 won´t be allowed to sound louder than 75dB...AMG GT R´s sound of Goodwood and USA will be the sound for the rest of the world...

Best regards
Filou

P.S. I hope it´s just a mule of a more hardcore version using the GT R body, like a Black Series version which has to be that quiet because it will release some time in the future.

Best regards
Filou

Hamilton wants in on Mercedes supercar development

Lewis Hamilton has said he wants to work with Mercedes-AMG on a future version of the GT sports car and joked about calling it the GT LH Edition. “I’ve already told [head of AMG] Tobias [Moers], ‘You’ve got the world champion and all of this F1 tech. Let’s make this work’,” he said.

I have seen the car during a private presentation for the customers. It really is a beast.

In race mode exhaust gases don´t go into the central silencer/exhaust, but actually around it into side pipes. It is the loudest AMG yet and I got a headache from the noise and all the shooting, while I was standing right behind. :D

THE 3-FLOW AMG GT R AMG PERFORMANCE EXHAUST

Specially for the new Mercedes-AMG GT R, a 3-flute AMG performance exhaust system was developed, which is included as standard. For the unique, low-frequency sound, the titanium rear silencer contributes significantly. The sound can be adjusted by means of stepless exhaust gas flaps - using AMG DYNAMIC SELECT or a separate button.

Together with pipework made of thin-walled stainless steel, the titanium rear silencer provides a weight savings of around 6 kg.

The very large and centrally placed tailpipe trim adds a breathtaking racing flair to the GT R of the R190 range. The two additional, not directly visible tailpipes are located on the outside and are enclosed by a heat protection made of carbon.

Sound image adjustable

The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT and / or the separate button are equipped with continuously variable exhaust flues, which give you a consciously restrained sound or a spectacular sound.

When you adjust Comfort or Sport, the driver enjoys a more comfort-oriented sound for long-distance journeys. On the other hand, the clear specification for Sport+ or Race is now a pure racing sound with AMG-specific low-frequency sound and also the intermediate gas when gear shifting becomes an even more emotional - exclusive - sound, also including the driving experience.

The AMG GT R from Mercedes-AMG is currently the top model of the 190 series and is currently available - and probably only as a closed coupe variant. The order release for the model has already taken place, even if production for Germany is limited in terms of capacity. A first delivery to customers of the sports car will take place in spring 2017.
