Lexus LFA laps the Nurburgring in 7:14
The Nurburgring edition LFA has set a blistering lap time around the Nordschleife.

In a fitting tribute to its nomenclature, the Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition has set a blistering lap of seven minutes fourteen seconds around the infamous German circuit.

It comes following what many saw as a fairly tame 7:22 exhibition lap in a Nurburgring edition by Gazoo Racing Driver Akira Iida recently. This new lap serves to confirm the LFA as one of the fastest supercars to ever lap the thirteen-mile track.

It is all the more interesting when you take into account that the Nurburgring Edition is not significantly altered from the standard Lexus range-topper. The 4.8 V10 is tweaked to produce an extra 10bhp only, taking the total to 562. Along with the engine upgrades, the gearbox was reconfigured for faster shifts, the suspension was stiffened-up and made adjustable. In terms of aerodynamics, it features a fixed rear spoiler (as opposed to the speed controlled one in the regular LFA) and new aerodynamic canards at the front, in a similar vain to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0.

The OEM tyre of the Nurburgring Edition are performance-oriented Bridgestone Potenza RE70s, and it is on these that the 7.22 lap time was set. No official details have yet been released about the 7:14 lap and which tyres were used. If the time is validated, it would make the LFA the fourth fastest production car around the Nurburgring.

Twitter / Lexus EU:

7'14" - the video is coming shortly.....

Looks like the guy in that German Grip TV test really enjoyed it. I'd imagine a program like that would be fairly outrageous among children's safety groups here in the US. :D

It's pretty interesting that Lexus are allowing journalists out on unfettered laps on the Nordschleife with a near half-million euro supercar, as in that Russian TG driver's video. Autocar's Andrew Frankel had the same to say via Twitter:
"Aug 30
Still coming down from yesterday - LFA 'Ring edition, with said track to myself. No rules, no chaperones. Just enjoy they said. So I did."

Shows a lot of faith they have in the car, but you just got to think someone's going to stuff one into a guardrail.

Another video showing the extreme throttle response of the LFA, showing how quickly the revs rise and fall:

A forum member on Pistonheads ("andy665") giving his driving impression of the standard LFA:
"I have been fortunate to drive an LFA at speed and to examine it many times in very close detail, stripped down etc.
What I can say is that the driving experience is very intense - the gearbox in its most aggressive setting is like being kicked in the back but very smooth in its most relaxed setting. Very controllable but lots of fun and with an engine to die for.
Build quality is astonishing, never seen carbon so superbly crafted and painted.
No its have the badge but in all other respects its up with the very best - and being a Lexus relaibility is hardly going to be a concern"
"When I said nervous perhaps I should have meant 'no sneeze factor'. I have driven many cars over the years but the LFA amazed me in the way that it appeared to pivot at a point equal to the driver's (or passenger's hip point), took some getting used to.
Lexus are losing money on every LFA they produce, they wanted to use it as a test bed for advanced composite materials and also as a showcase for what they can do when they choose to go off in a particular direction.
I have seen an LFA being stripped down and the quality is more than just skin deep, some serious quality and engineering at work."
"I'm no expert - just lucky enough to drive decent / interesting cars as part of my job. The LFA felt more like a well sorted mid engined car than a front engined car, no understeer to speak of and certainly no feeling of a V10 engine being hung out front, mind you it is mounted behind the front suspension line.
The one thing I would have liked was more feel in the steering but I think thats an issue everyone is having with electric set-ups, lets hope Porsche have cracked it with the 991."

Thanks. Just read it and Randy Pobst's impression it:

LFA’s Ring Result Confirmed: 7:14.64

a570b53661a2b116488a1c5f13edd83f.webp

After checking the telemetry, and posing for a group shot, it’s official: The Lexus Nürburgring-enhanced LFA did the now common 20.6 kilometer “sport auto” lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in seven minutes, 14.64 seconds. That’s a hair better than the Donkervoort D8 RS, which completed the same course in 7:14.89 – 5 years ago. It is also the best time amongst the bona-fide production models. Better than the Nissan GT-R (7 min 24 sec), better than the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (7 minutes 19 sec), better than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS (7 minutes 18 seconds).

Still, it doesn’t take the Lexus all the way to the top of the production league. In front of it are three more “production” cars. Two Radicals (6:48 and 6:55) and one Gumpert Apollo that had rounded the Ring in 7:11.57. All not necessarily mass market cars, but the LFA isn’t either:

Of the plain vanilla LFA, only 500 are built. The record breaking LFA Nürburgring-Edition is produced 50 times. However, it is street legal, even under strict German rules. The red “Überführungsnummer” (dealer or temporary tag) from Cologne (denoted by the “K” in front) attests to that.

Be it as it may, it is a great win, and it will most likely lead to increased tinkering, especially in Zuffenhausen. Being passed by a car nobody ever heard of is one thing. But by a Lexus?

“Ja, was bilden die sich denn ein, die Japaner!”

PS: Bloggers, please don’t try to impress your readers with “bridge to gantry.” As the authority on the topic, bridgetogantry.com, explains:

“After exiting the carpark at ‘C’ on the map above, drive under the Bridge (Antoniusbuche) at ‘B’. From here it’s 19.1km to the Gantry.”

Bridge to gantry is for tourist days. The full lap is 20.6 kilometers.

Yikes the Corvette killed them.

M

Yeah, the cup tires were grippy as hell:

Randy's impressions:

"It was such a beast when we tested it at Willow Springs on regular street tires. Well, now it's got the grip for its capabilities. It's a whole 'nother animal."

"I'll tell you what, much easier car to drive on R-compound tires. I felt like the car was really fast. It was generating a lot of grip. The Corvette is far better on this tire. It can handle the power. It kinda felt a little bit soft, which makes you feel a little bit...dull around the edges. There's less precision in the movements than other cars here."
