Yes, you can reduce lag, but the bigger problem is the non-linear throttle response. Lag is just one symptom of that problem - the one that pops it's head first. But with turbos you are not going to get a linear throttle response, because there is a no linear relationship between the throttle position and the amount of air being fed into the engine. It is like linking your pedal to throttle body with a rubber band. Yes, sure, you can do stuff to diminish the elastic effect, but you are not going to completely remove it. At least not with turbos as they commonly exist today. May be tomorrow with help from electrical motors accelerating/decelerating the turbos they can simulate a linear response.

No, I do understand. The reason I mentioned lag was because that's like one of the first steps in dealing with such a throttle response. So far, the best I've heard is that the McLaren engine has been quite successful at it.

And I agree with you. I think an electrical solution is the way to go. That's why I think that KERS system is being underutilized in F1. That can be a true testing ground for this FI specific issue.

More power, less weight
Cavalino Design has sent us two renders depicting a potential Ferrari 488 GTB in the hotter Speciale guise.

Ferrari introduced the 458 Speciale back in August 2013 as a more powerful and lighter derivative of the 458 Italia. Output of the naturally aspirated V8 4.5-liter engine was bumped by 35 HP (26 kW) to 605 HP (445 kW) at 9,000 rpm while torque remained the same at 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) at 6,000 rpm wrapped around in a body weighing 90 kg less (at 1,290 kg).

Last week, the 1,370 kg 488 GTB made its online debut with a twin-turbo V8 3.9-liter engine unleashing 670 HP (493 kW) and 760 Nm (560 lb-ft) so a potential 488 GTB Speciale version would pack even more, possibly hitting the 700 HP (515 kW) mark. The added oomph would be matched by a more aggressive body envisioned in the attached renders with vented hood and front fenders, more aerodynamic side skirts together with a beefier rear end enhanced by additional vents, carbon fiber spoiler lip, prominent diffuser and four exhaust tips although the 458 Speciale has only two pipes.

Since the 488 GTB hasn't even made its public debut, it's safe to say it will take a couple of years until a more potent version worthy of the Speciale suffix will be out.

Special thanks go to Cavalino for sending us the renders!

^^Yeah. It looks like it was made busy just for the sake of making it busy. Not everything needs millions of fins and crap.

It should be GTO, not GTB Speciale... that doesn't make sense.

Definitely not feeling it. They should have left 458 alone and came up with a new design.

I'm with you on that one. I thought Ferrari didn't do face-lift. This model doesn't looks as new as the 360 Moderna, F430 or 458 did. It's as if all they did was ad a few vents and slants to the 458 and called it a day. Compared with the stunning F12 and jaw-droppingly awesome LaFerrari, the 488 is a bit of a downer.

I am guessing the new turbo probably needs a lot more radiator surface area for the intercoolers etc. And they just tacked on bigger nose to the old car.

I actually like it a little more in that shade of grigio, though it still doesn't get me going a like a proper mid-engined Ferrari ought to.
