X1 [Official] BMW X1 (F48)

The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by BMW since 2009. A subcompact luxury crossover class, the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman.
When will the X1 23e be available...?

A pre-production Concept will be shown at the IAA in September. Bar a few cosmetic conceptual areas it will be identical to the car on sale in late 2016.
But we will see 223e Active Tourer soon, not long in fact.

I think it is good news we talk about a few tiny things of the interior, and the gear level. They are trully the only negatives of the car.

But this is so much better looking than the CLA and the Q3 that only a bad pricing could make a customer go for them.

The only difficulty with X1 E84 was when the rivals arrived to offer more interior room, especially in the rear.
But the X1 had complete dominance of the market since 2009 but you cannot ignore that it has sold around 730,000 units and is still Europe's most popular compact SUV with sales reaching 100,000 units within the first year alone.
The new one will transition perfectly but will make sure that its increase in interior space is noted and marketed well. BMW hopes to reach the 1 millionth sale of the X1 series within two years of the on sale date in October to stand alongside the X3 and X5 which both have reached over 1 million units comfortably in their combined generations.

Agree with many that the exterior looks a lot better than expected. But I'm not too impressed with the interior.

We currently love our X3 as my wife's car and "family" vehicle.

Scott, how did BMW manage to sneak into Sydney at such a iconic location?

I have a '14 X5 so I do not necessarily need a 4 -wheel drive car and I like the smaller BMWs since they drive so well. I particularly like the N20 based 3er's so the B58 seems to be a logical step up. That said, I would not mind the new G30 if it had all the bells and whistles of the G11.
Well, it depends on what you need your car for. If your annual mileage is high and mostly driven on highways (Autobahn) the 5er would be your choice. If you're driving mostly on roads and in cities and if you don't need the extra space, the 3er would be the one. I do think, that the new 5er will have most of the 7er highlights, if not all: gesture control, adaptive cruise control 2.0, carbon core etc.

2. The interior looks nice as well. I am almost sure that the central tunnel plastics will be the new inside joke at KIA's HQ, but I have made my peace with it.

It wouldn't surprise me. In my F30 the plastic on the side of the transmission tunnel that faces the front passenger feel as cheap and hollow as the textured plastic kiddy car.

Hold on there @Centurion, you've got to save all your best BMW criticisms .....the new 7er is only days away! ;)

He'll have no need for those. Don't you know the new 7 Series is perfect? And it will remain so until the LCI in three and a half years, when it will become even more perfect.

Great design, typical BMW SAV and CONGRATS BMW! You actually listened ;) The cabin materials and perceived quality looks REAL Premium for a change!(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)+(y)

Hell, the current generation X1's cabin was poor crappy "made in China" shite.

Calvin Luk, the designer of the new BMW X1

Calvin Luk is on a roll. The new 2016 BMW X1 is visual hit that comes on the heels of his LCI design of the 1 Series – which was more than welcome. Calvin has done a masterful job with the new X1 and that comes from years and years of designing.

His path to BMW started when, as a child, he sent a series of drawings to BMW’s then Chief of Design, Chris Bangle. The response he received from BMW was a roadmap on how to become an automotive designer. He followed it to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. That led to internships with some gig name auto makers and eventually to a job with BMW.

Calvin has managed to give a muscular, X worthy, look to the new X1 – which in reality is based on BMW’s new FWD architecture. With the additional height and a shorter grille to firewall dimension of the new X1 versus the old X1 great care had to be taken with the design to ensure that the new X1 became something more than just another ‘cute ute’.

Calvin’s hard work and determination has paid off for BMW. If you view the new X1 against the old – in particular ¾ views – you can see that there is a more three dimensional feel to the new X1. In addition the front fascia is spot on – much better than the old, especially the lower fascia which helps ‘plant’ the car. Out back the surfaces on the rear are significantly different than the old X1. This is a winning design.

In addition, the LED headlamps and kidney grilles are really well integrated. One of the features of the old X1 we are not sorry to see disappear is the set back hood opening – the new X1’s hood opening extends down to the upper edge of the kidneys. Perfect!

And Calvin’s design is proportionally spot on when viewed from the side. This is really good design and it’s nice to see BMW recognized this. Calvin Luk has a bright future with BMW in front of him judging by his body of his work to date. And we’ve heard he might have another homerun design in the near future.

That's a great story about how he got the job. I'm glad BMW have allowed him to gift the car an adventurous design that doesn't make it look entry level.

I'm afraid that the M-packet, which looks great from the presented angles will not look so good in straight profile.

The body cladding on the standard model, between the wheel wells, hides how tall the doors are, so you don't see how relatively short the glass in the windows is. I hope with the M-packet, and the commendably well integrated door sill, the car will still look handsome. Other than that fear, the M-packet looks enticing.

Wow I am pleasantly surprised how good looking this new X1 is, the styling is a nice evolution of current model, but it is better executed. I would go further in saying that I think this is the best looking X series BMW produces. I like the front light and grill design much better than the not so nice headlight meets/joins grill found on the other X models. It's rear lights also look very nice. The overall balance of styling and proportions are spot on with this model. The interior is a big improvement on the current model which had the worst interior of any BMW, crap build quality. This new model interior is still not fantastic especially the gear lever and center console design.

I like this X1 much more than the Audi Q3.
