M5 [Official] BMW M5 (F90)


The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M

The exhaust is enough with the side mirror and side grill.

I think the last car to pull off the ///M tri colours was the E36 M3 lightweight and that was liberally applied. Leave those decals for motorsports BMW!
 
It's very overdone. A M5 doesn't need much to dress it up. The car is hot in stock form.

I get the sense that the entire M Accessories department staff is in their early 20's. Way too much cosmetic carbon fiber and M decals.

I suppose they are catering to the changing customer preference and the "instagram" generation. It is now more and more common to see cars with a bit of customization here and there, and people putting random M stripes on their standard BMWs. Mercedes-AMG is just as guilty as well with their "Editions"

those stickers look so damn tacky. My 20 year-old self would think they look like garbage. My 10 year-old self might consider it cool, but I can acknowledge that when I was 10, I had no taste.
 
Back in its' day, this car caught an abundance of flak for appearing "pretentious". More than a few owners, having felt embarrassed, had the decals removed post-delivery. My then 20 year old self appreciated the rare sight of a silver example sans the warpaint.

But fast forward 43 years later, I reckon that most collectors' would insist on the stickers.

O.K., I realize that this is a tad OT. I couldn't help myself.

When I think of that car I think of the stickers would really look plain without them.
 
In an attempt to counteract the monotony of incessant new M5 photograph postings, I have resolved to incessantly post photographs of old 2002 Turbos on the M5 thread.

Recently featured on Jay Leno's Garage program, this 2002 restomod (E30 M3 engine) would most definitely be a personal "dream garage" entry.

Now excuse me while I search the internet for Alpine White, Donington Grey, Snapper Blue and Borscht Matte examples.

One less genuine 2002 Turbo on the roads, and one less S14 engine available to keep a genuine E30 M3 on the roads. It's a shit state of affairs, and to make things worse, the Alpina rims aren't even contemporary. I'd one-inch-punch whoever did this in the windpipe ..in my mind.

I am actually ok with this. Maybe it's nostalgia or maybe it's because it isn't a blatant cash-grab by BMW or ///M, but it works for me. It gets no harsh criticism from me.

As for the whole "resto-mod with a more modern engine/internal gubbins" trend... I understand the purist's point of view, the reason you want a particular classic car is to experience the unadulterated classic car feel. But if the restoration addresses major shortcomings of cars of that era, i.e. cars of that era's propensity to rust very quickly, then I see no problem. The whole "switching out the engine" bit I am still on the fence on that. There's a part of me that would find an E9 with an E36 M3's 3.0L or 3.2L or E34 M5's 3.5L to be intriguing, and that's despite knowing that it'd would significantly alter the car's weight distribution.

As for the Borscht Matte scheme, I think I've made myself well-known on where I stand on that....:mad:

I'll readily admit often departing from the purists' path and appreciating those outrageous Alois Ruf, Magnus Walker and Mechatronic folks' (among others) creations. A company located in southeastern Bavaria named MKO GmbH underpinned BMW E9 CS/CSi models with E39 M5 engines/drivetrains several years ago. Exciting, outrageous stuff !!

Yeah, I read about this a few years ago. Initially I was fascinated, but now I even consider that too out there. @CrunchedSlaughter made a great point regarding placing a modern AMG engine into a classice MB and how the wheel/brakes of yesteryear would not be able to cope with that much power. Even though it has E39 running bits, it probably messes with what was an ideal weight balance, a crucial feature of a any performance-oriented BMW.

I know this has severely swerved way off-topic. So I'll be that guy and say that we stick to the F90 M5. Which, by the way, looks like an athlete in a perfectly fitted gray suit in Donington Gray. I'd spec in that with the Individual Plum wood trim.
