M3/M4 [Official] BMW M4 GTS

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M
Jörg Weidinger managed an outstanding time of approximately 7min 28s on the legendary Nürburgring North Loop in a BMW M4 GTS. We spoke to him.

Jörg, you work in the vehicle dynamics department at BMW M GmbH. What is your job exactly?

Joerg Weidinger: The team I work with integrates the components that are relevant to the vehicle's dynamics, with the aim of achieving optimum overall coordination that BMW M automobiles are known for; this results in the typical M driving sensation.

But it is not just at work that you are at the wheel of fast cars.

I worked for ten years as an instructor at BMW Driving Experience. And for more than twenty years I have been developing my passion for motor sports, in hill climb racing, circuit racing, slalom and rallies – and always with BMW models. My championship titles (two each in the European Hill Climb Championship and the German Hill Climb Championship) were my greatest successes, alongside a few good 24h races.

You managed an impressive time of 7min 28s in the new BMW M4 GTS on the North Loop. What is it that makes this car so fast?

The BMW M4 GTS is indeed a thrilling overall package. This is not just because of its formidable engine but the three-way coilover suspension also plays an important role. The kinematics, tyres, aerodynamics, and the design of the 'driver's workplace' – all of these components are coordinated to work together perfectly.

We are talking about 7min 28s. What was your exact time?

We timed it to a degree of hundredths of a second. But we would like to give our fans a chance to guess what the precise time was.

OK, so as a prize we will award the winner with a drive with you in the BMW M4 GTS on the North Loop of the Nürburgring.

#### I wanted to guess 7:29 after seeing his fist pump. But then thought it's too quick. Wow, great job BMW. That's a mighty time.

That should be top 30-40 on ring times.
That has to be one of the fastest lap times by a BMW.

BMW has never shown a lap around N-ring before. Why the sudden change? Insecurity?
I hate this N-ring hysteria.

I think they just want to show that they are not ALFA about Ring times...(and this probably and finally will push Alfa to show something who knows?)

Considering the power output its really fast the time, faster than other much more powerful cars, Ferrari 458 Italia is another car with same time and its got 570PS.

The 911 GT3 RS new version has done 7:20 and GT3 in 7:25.

Ok so I stand corrected, it's as fast as a GT3 RS, but there've been tests already where the GT3 RS is 8 secs faster....This is going to be an epic battle either way, maybe some pro driver car get a better time out of the GTS too...

I hate this N-ring hysteria.

Why? You dislike the Football WorldCup and Olympics too?

Get out of my way...

Is that spoiler lip already completely scratched to the point where they added some tape to the left? Or am I seeing a bad pic or something?

This car is actually Alpine White as you can see on the wings and mirrors so it is a development car that has been removed of excess camouflage.
The scratches are indication of prototype materials so like the Christmas Turkey this car will eventually be visiting the slaughterhaus.

Somehow, I feel that this car misses the mark. It wont be remembered as the best sports car BMW has ever made. The majority of them will end up in the garages of car collectors (too rare to drive regularly or track - too valuable not to keep locked up in storage).

So what is the primary purpose of this car? I'd say profit.

It is awesome around the ring. Some of my observations about the cars behaviour. Excellent turn in and steering response around most bends with virtually no body roll. The chassis looks so neutral, no observations of understeer or any snap oversteer, excellent grip on all fours. Engine pulls like a train lower down, acceleration and traction look really good out of corners, with really nice engine sound. The car looks like it is made for the ring, so natural and unstressed around most corners. The brakes slow the car down immensely from over 200km/h to 80 to 100 km/h in quick time for most corners.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
