iX [Official] BMW iX (i20) [2021-

The BMW iX is a battery-electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer BMW. It was unveiled in concept form as the Vision iNext at the 2018 LA Auto Show, and then in its production form in November 2020. The iX is BMW's second fully electric vehicle after the i3 in 2013, and the fourth BMW i sub-brand model.
Well developing a standalone platform for just the iX seems to be a leftover from the Krüger era, now they must've changed the strategy with developing a platform fit for every drivetrain but engineered around BEV's. Announcing it as the flagship for autonomous driving and then releasing it with level 2 capabilities without a clear timeframe for level 3 doesn't look good either.

Looking just at the iX I've got to say though that I quite like it already. I'm not aware of any production car that looks more like a futuristic concept than this. Those slim ligths, especially the ones on the rear are fantastic too. In my opinion they took a great approach on the interior which is unlike anything else, very airy, premium and comfy. I wouldn't be surprised if others replicate some of these ideas.
The electric drivetrain seems to deliver some great performance too from what is known till now. Maybe a little early too properly judge that.
When I see an i3 I still think it looks futuristic and that car has gone into production in 2013! Now I think the iX will do even better at still looking futuristic in some years time. I appreciate that, not sure if that bold approach is helpful for sales numbers though.

I like it with that (i guess) M-Sport like package. But why are they showing the car when it wont be on the market for another whole year? On bmw.ch it says "by the end of 2021"...

this will sell like hot cakes in the executive SUV segment.

It's rumoured to start at £85,000 here. That's 50% more than the X5 starts at, and about £10k more than the X7. I'm not saying the iX wouldn't have its advantages against both, but I think pricing will stop it being as popular, even if nothing else did.

iX tech at iX3 prices, in a package that looked like the X5 would do very well. But, at this point I can't imagine BMW are expecting this to be a big a volume seller.

I dont know why but the red one looks 10x better than the other one.Btw i find the front of the red one very aggressive and bold and i like the rear of the car as well.the only criticism about the car is the side at some angles it looks like a van and that is not a good thing at all.

Despite the negative statements of some here (who would have thought...) this will sell like hot cakes in the executive SUV segment. Much more advanced than MB and Audi's offerings, great range and a bold statement in terms of exterior and interior design. Can imagine the reference to some French cars as the iX breathes a similar joie de vivre.

Not trying to offend, but what are these 'much more advanced' features you refer to?

Also the range will be pretty mediocre by the end of 2021, no?

600 km is not bad at all. But the idea that this approach is already abandoned at BMW makes it like a band with only one hit, that has disappeared after it.

Hope this design never sees the production. I'm all for the battery tech making it into production.

But how can BMW have fans for these cars? The M4, M3 and now this big kidney face? What the f#ck.

So disappointing: the entire campaign to end-product reveal.
Why not use the opportunity to build an absolutely beautiful electric vehicle? Make people sit up and take notice and say "Wow - look at that - if the future is electric then count me in!"
Instead, we get this. A van. An ugly van. With an interior that doesn't resonate with anyone - neither BMW loyalists nor fresh-thinking, early adopters.
And why - why, why, why - must they persist with those blue accents? That message is old and tired now.

Ever since I was a young kid growing up through my twenties, thirties... BMW always made exciting cars. Even a boggo 5er was exciting! E39? Forget the magnificent M5 - even the 528i was a sensation. And yes, I'm not saying that all current BMWs lack excitement either, but this, this is not exciting. It's boring. I don't want to look at it and I certainly don't yearn for one because I absolutely have to have its achingly beautiful presence on my driveway.

A new generation of electric BMW, the first NEXT car, surely should evoke other emotions in order to set the tone? I guess, "it's practical and it's electric" is good enough for BMW now...

I feel the same way. I told myself it was going to look better revealed but...no it's about what I feared. It could've been more ugly I suppose but it's definitely lacking the "gotta have it" factor for me. Worse, my fears that I expressed in the spy thread about it looking like a bit like a van have come true. I wish they could've built some of the X5's muscularity into this.

Right, my negative misgivings aside, there are things that I like and appreciate...

The carbon fibre tub is cool AF. Delighted to see that BMW have leveraged the momentum gained from the original BMW i program.
I'm very pleased with the overall thinking behind the interior. I can even tolerate that vast curved display panel, hooded and cowled traditionalist I may still be. I like the fresh approach to interior materials and touch interfaces. The mount-your-own-tablet concept in the back is great - strike that unnecessary expense off the options list. Textures, surfacing and use of recycled materials is commendable and long overdue.

Mixed feelings overall.

Nah, not my cup of tea. Indifferent, borderline wrong design language, totally uninspiring interior, missed chance as far as the general shape and proportions are concerned. They could have done better. A lot better.

I'm not happy for saying this, but with debuts like this one, Tesla seems to be the only ones who get "it".

As I said, it is an unusual style for the brand nowadays , it greatly weighs the airy interior and greenhouse over the claustrophobic little windows that give a more sporty line, that is already in the X5 and they could have done it here easily, but they chose not to.

Conceptually it is something else, it opens the range of the market to a new public in addition to part of the captive and according to what I see on the streets from other brands, many people will want it.

I like the interior, but at least as seen, between the gold and the jewel buttons, is too effeminate. Maybe there are alternative options.

Exterior, less said the better. That f#cking grill is the horse head from the Horsey Horseless.

What I still don't get is the strategy of leading with a SUV. Yes, SUVs sell, but at the price speculated this will never be a big seller, so why not make your flagship an attractive car that will be good for PR like Taycan/etron GT?

Certainly more technically advanced than current M-B (EQC) and VAG (Audi eTron + Sportback) competitors. However, the EQE/EQS SUVs' and PPE-based VAG offerings (beginning with the Macan E onwards) will firmly anchor both M-B and VAG as formidable forces in this particular segment.

Precisely my sentiments as well.

Hate the screens on MBs products, hate it even more here..and the fact that the center console doesn’t connect to the front panel bothers me at great length. Really gives it a van feel, which is what this is in the end. The interior isn’t something that looks cohesive with the brand..which was supposed to be something sporting in essence, calibrated to the market focus of the product..in short, it should look like a bmw and few like one, even if it needs to be more utilitarian. That being said, I really like the materials, that wood touch panel next to the idrive looks and probably feel great to use, much better than piano black. Something that i like about MB is the seat controls on the door panel and i think it looks great in this application here, there is alot to like in this interior if it wasn’t for its design tbh.

Strong MPV feelings on the exterior as i said, dont know where they brought that DRL pattern from, has absolutely nothing to do with BMW, pretty much “change for the sake of change” when there wasn’t anything wrong with it to begin with (much like the new layout on this forum).

To summarize, it could have been a great product, lots of nice ideas thrown out of context or executed the wrong way (imo). BMW bringing its ”i” weirdo lineup up to date.

Maybe they don't want to compete directly with Porsche. Its competitors will be the Model X, which is not a great seller and the EQS SUV, so maybe it is easier to make a good impression exactly in this segment.

Windscreen washer bottle is hidden beneath the front badge. Clamshell hood is sealed and can not be opened. I.e. no frunk
