That is what I said here. They should have given A8 this front end and they would have easily had the best looking car in the class. Instead they gave A8 the retarded front end and the A7 the retarded rear end and screwed both cars up.

I REAAAALY like the external design of this Audi. I'd be torn choosing between this and the CLS providing prices and specs were similar.

Also of course in real life none of these cars will look exactly "bad", the lines and bulges and everything will make it look new and eye catching, but this doesn't mean it looks good. that rear end and the shape is just disgusting.

From the spy pics I really thought the new CLS was going to be my pick for this generation of '4 door coupes'.

As much as I think the the A7 is slightly on the understated side, having now seen the official CLS pic's I now think the CLS is way over-styled, incoherent and awkward from many angles. Needless to say I would always prefer understated to over-styled.

However, I am going to leave my final verdict until I see these and the GC IRL but have a feeling the A7 may come out surprisingly well.

The CLS is extravagant, even beautiful and I believe that the 6er GC would be even more good looking albeit not as extravagant. The A7 is a somewhat boring design...lazy effort. Though I must admit the A7 is much better looking than the A8 I can't describe the A7 as ugly, just boring....

I think A7 design was limited by the platform. and I still believe that platform is shared with the Panamera no matter what both companies say. The rear hatch not a coincedence or something audi wanted to do IMO, its just the platform coming from the Panamera forced them to have the hatch shape. Given this theory, I think audi did a good jop minimizing the hatchback or fastback effect while Panamera didn't.

The A7 is an A6 derivative and use the platform and internals of the forthcoming A6. Using the Panamera's wide garage busting platform wouldn't make much sense as it would have made the A7 as spacious or even more spacious than the more premium positioned A8.

Using a hatch-ish body shape was a concious and deliberate decision, rather than a technical limitation, paying hommage to the Audi 100S. More so the body shape sets Audi's four door coupes apart from the CLS.

Before Centurion answered - I never thought about the possibility that the A7 share the same platform as the Panamera...Would have been plausible IMO.

The two cars do share the same platform, it's well know as fact. Which I might add is a great sign as to how well the A7 should handle.

I told you guys, there is no way the A7 would be this low (1410mm) using the A6 platform unless they were willing to through some serious cash in the R&D.

I am glad it is true, since as Footie said, it would handle great (or should have the right ingredients atleast).

Isn't Audi platform still a FWD platform, while Panamera has RWD platform? I really doubt Porsche & Audi using same platforms in this case. And FYI: it's possible to have lower (or taller) cars sitting on a sedan platform. Just check BMW and their platform: 6-series measures approx. 1.40m in height, while 5-series GT stops @ 1.56m. SAME platform. If BMW can do it, I'm sure Audi can do it too.

Mercedes is be able to use the same platform but with a much lower roof line, C-class and the "E" coupe, E-class and the CLS, I am sure Audi can do the same as well? Having said that, the distance between the highest point of the roof to the ground can be changed by having a different suspension tuning.

I've never heard this! Not saying it isn't plausible but don't think A7 shares it's platform and is a derivitive of the new A6 platform. Ofcourse there is a degree of sence for them to share platforms just as the Q7 platform is shared but incase of the A7 I'm not sure

Yeah, the engine configuration for bot hcars are different. Besides that, sugin the A6 platform for the A7 means that it man be more cheaper and conviniently be put together on the same assembly line as the A6. Using the Panny platform would entail too many unneccessary modifications which would add to the platform.

It would only make sense to use the nearest and cheapest donnor car i.e A6 just like the CLS is based on the E-Class and the X6 on the X5. The Panny platform would IMO be better suited for a continental GT coupe. In that way Porsche wouldn't disscount the huge financial resources they invested into the Panny. Why spend one billion dollars and 6-7 years developing the most sophisticated platform of any four door car, to then use it for a significantly cheaper model?
