NSX [Official] Acura NSX (NC1)

The Honda NSX, marketed in North America as the Acura NSX, is a two-seater, rear mid-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car manufactured by Honda. The origins of the NSX trace back to 1984, with the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina eXperimental) concept, for a 3.0 L (180 cu in) V6 rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car. Honda, with the intention of meeting or exceeding the performance of the then V8 engine Ferrari range, committed to the project, aiming at both reliability and a lower price. The concept evolved and had its name changed to NS-X, which stood for "New", "Sportscar" "eXperimental", although the production model launched as the NSX.

Features 9-speed dual-clutch gearbox
After a rather lengthy development process, Acura has finally unveiled the production-ready NSX.

The second generation Acura NSX draws most of its styling cues from previous concept but everything else has changed as Acura has decided to ditch the naturally aspirated V6 of the 2013 concept in favor of a longitudinally-mounted twin-turbocharged V6 developing “north of 550 horsepower.” The conventional engine works together with three electric motors sending all power to both axles to form what Acura calls the Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive.

Two of the electric motors are mounted up front for torque vectoring while the third direct-drive motor sits at the back between the combustion engine and the newly developed dual clutch nine-speed gearbox. The Acura NSX sits on 19-inch front & 20-inch rear wheels shod in 245/35Z R19 front and 295/30Z R20 rear tires and stops efficiently thanks to six-piston front & four-piston rear calipers coupled to carbon ceramic brake discs.

Compared to the 2013 concept, the production-ready NSX has grown in length by 1.8 inches to 176 inches (4470mm); in width by 5.1 inches to 76.4 inches (1940mm); in height by 1.8 inches to 47.8 inches (1215mm) while the wheelbase is now 0.8 inches longer at 103.5 inches (2630mm).

The production-ready Acura NSX comes with a dial-operated Integrated Dynamic System with Quiet, Sport, Sport+ and Track modes which depending on choice adjust the settings of the engine, electric motors, gearbox and chassis, as well as the engine sound level. There’s also a launch function which uses the combustion engine and all three electric motors for a “zero delay” launch performance.

Full technical specifications and performance details are (still) not available at this point while pricing is estimated to kick off at $150,000.

Further details can be found in the attached press release.

Wow, they are serious with engine output here......twin turbo V6 making >550 HP, along with 3 electric motors in an AWD platform. Maybe this really will rival/outperform the next Ferrari 458 Turbo at a much lower price point!!

According to the press release, the NSX will be made exclusively in a new plant in Ohio. I ponder whether there will be a right-hand drive version... Imagine that, a pinnacle Honda not available in RHD for Japan.

Honda will be dead in the water if they don't release a RHD for the UK, and most importantly Japanese market. It's a perfect halo car for getting people, other than Type R boy racers excited about the brand.

It's a really innovative car and I'll be interested to find out whether they price it lower than an R8 V10 which I doubt given the R&D that must have gone into this car over the years. Hopefully price won't be inflated by it being over-developed like the Lexus LFA that risked ending up as vaporware.

I'm confused here.. 55ohp is the total combined output of the TT V6 and three electric motors or that the petrol engine alone?

It's a very attractive car, I like it. I wonder how far north of 550hp it has, I think it really needs 600hp, with a Type R later on with closer to 700hp.

What I like about the NSX is it's taken the technology from the 3 hybrid hypercars and brought it down to a more affordable price point.

As they did with the original NSX Honda have just schooled everyone in how to build a modern supercar. This is what the BMW i8 should have been like.

I am really liking this. But like Tarek, I am confused if the output quoted is for the total or just for the petrol. I am hoping it's the latter, and if it is, that is rather impressive then.

Clearly with a twin-turbo V6 + 3 electric motors, total power output ought to be significantly higher than 550 Hp which I reckon is a conservative figure taking into account the 530+ output from Nissan's VR38DETT twin-turbo V6.

Looks like Ford have gone and rained on Honda's parade with their own mid-engine twin-turbo'd supercar.

I am so excited to see this car finally been launched.

It looks so fantastic, love the interior as well. I also love to hear the immense amount of meticulous design and engineering gone into the powertrain (550+bhp WOW), 9 speed dual clutch gearbox, aluminium and carbon fibre chassis.

It certainly will shake up the establishment and in my opinion makes a BMW i8 look too fussy and underpowered!
