E46 320d Touring Automatic. Still. It's still in great condition.

I'm a sucker for mini-SAVs, crossovers, GTs & SACs etc ... 5dr vehicles in general.
Right now I'm looking for something with elevated driving position.
3er GT & X3 are just too big for my needs, X4 way too expensive. 4er GC too expensive & too low.

So, I'm in market for eg. X1 but I decided to skip this generation & wait for Mk2 X1, or even X2. 2er Active Tourer also appeals to me ... So my next car will most probably be either 2er AT, X1 or X2. 20d xDrive this time.

Why I'm fighting for 5dr hatches of any kind? Because I find them appealing & definitely practical - in contrast to some others who can only bitch about such cars because the purpose of such cars does not appeal to them, or because they don't the concept at all - because it's alien to THEM. When it's obvious it has quite some (practical) appeal to others though.

Sure everybody is entitled to the OPINION - but it would be rather nice to substantiate such opinion with rational arguments & claims, and to stay open-minded ... especially when there are thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people out there who have opted for those products. It's hard to take somebody's bitching seriously when there a huge pool of people exists that completely denies that bitching.

Deriving everything from "I" perspective is not a good source for great arguments.

Your use of pejorative terms such as "bitching" when people are simply giving their opinion does you no favours. And if someone doesn't like a car or see the point of it, it doesn't need any argument, rational or otherwise.

If somebody tells only his personal opinion it's absolutely correct. Some like pork, some beef. It would be bad if we all would have the same taste. But somebody have an opinion and they means all other have to share it and all other opinions are wrong. I can see this in other automobile forums too. I don't refer this post to special members. To be honest EnI, if anybody is getting "harassed" it's me by you. I told you:

1. IT IS a poor effort and you damn well know it..it has the identical rear and front from the 4er coupe.. it just has an extra damn door and a ugly ass window along with a hatchback tailgate. Exaaactly like the A5 sportback, and i think i heard some of the BMW brigade bitch back when that A5 was released.

2. I veery well do understand that someone might like it, also i do understand that its practical, and that is easy to load your groceries and what not..
But i i do not give a rats ass about that, i hate cars with such tailgates, and bmw already has the POOORLY named GT line for their obsession of hatchbacks.

3. There has been one GRANCOUPE.. that's what GC stands for, and that's the 6er.. So is it so damn wrong to expect something like that in a smaller scale? and not something that has been BASTARDIZED by the GT range? There is already a damn 3er GT.. for those who like hatches and find them practical..

So all in all yes its an opinion, and not only that! Each and everyone on this board including those who work for BMW know im right when it comes to this.

It's a 4er derivate - what else did you expect? A complete new design?
6er GC also features identical front & rear as 6er Coupe & Cabrio.
It's not like new series or new designation.

4er being too similar to 3er (geez, even 2er is much more different to 1er!!!!), or X4 being just an X3 with different ass (same case with X6 vs X5) - ok, that would be much more valid complaint & argument.

But complaining that 4er GranCoupe is too similar to 4er Coupe ... Sigh! I haven't heard any complaint before eg. that any cabrio of the same series is too similar to the coupe ... or touring too similar to the sedan.

Tailgate ... A5 owners like it A LOT, and BMW's feedback when asking about 4er GC was the same: people wanted extra practicality in the boot. Not the case in 6er GC - where customers were indifferent & did not expect extra practicality in that segment.

Hatchbacks are practical & popular - except in some markets (eg. US).

GT is a crossover - much larger & higher than 4er GC - and aimed to older population & others who prefer higher sitting position & more comfortable ride compared even to sedan of the same series.

OK, perhaps more SAV-like crossover would be better choice, perhaps. Nissan Quashqai-like vehicle ... But BMW wanted to offer something more exotic & extravagant ... more coupeish - since such shape is sportier & "more dynamic" & more in line with BMW brand image.

3. There has been one GRANCOUPE.. that's what GC stands for, and that's the 6er.. Gran Coupe is just a sub-trademark - made my marketing people - and it designates a coupe with extra doors (4 or even 5).

It's not that there is BMW Gran Coupe - a special series of one model: a large coupe. 6er GC - it's a part of 6er family, 4er GC is a part of 4er family etc


Just an info from "the other side" ... to explain the rationale behind the product planing.

1. Is not the CLS a 4 door coupe of the E class ? why is it totally different then? Why is this Audi and BMW way the only way to do a 4 door coupe? It is cheap easy and lazy that's what it is.
But sure ile live with that approach its not like BMW or Audi differentiate between the damn ranges much, so how can one expect them to do it when its the same range eg 4er family. So im not surprised by that, but the fact remains its lazy.. And who on gods green EARTH told YOU that A5 owners love their tailgate? of the f#ck course they do.. they bought the damn thing knowing it has a hatchback tail, its not like a f#cking surprise when they open the boot?!!! .. also who again told you that BMW asked their customers what..and what they in term answered? Put up some market research proof then!

Once again.. who told you that it is so..it sounds like yeah we have this stupid name..it means nothing..it has no cohesiveness to it.. as the GT name.. if someone asks lets make up a story..
And to think Mercedes got shit for calling the CLS a coupe.. hell every fool on the block is calling their hatchbacks coupes now..

i stand by my point.. the damn car needed no hatchback solution especially when it has a cousin called the 3er GT.. and it could have done with some small extra cool visual candy atleast over the rest of the 4er line up.. God forbid something drastically different though ( someone at bmw hq might get the nervous ticks).

No, CLS is not like 4dr E-coupe.

It's obviously a separate family (4dr coupe + 5dr shooting brake). Just like 6er (coupe, cabrio, 4dr coupe) is a separate family from 5er (sedan, wagon, crossover) - with separate styling. The only difference between CLS & 6er is that BMW have positioned 6er higher than MB have done with CLS.

Regarding marketing research ... they present the main results to the sales representatives @ sales representative product launch event.

2, 3 ... PR & marketing language ... who cares ... I don't.
