Nokia's stock plunged after the introduction of the company's two new smartphones, which run on the latest Windows 8 operating system, failed to woo investors.
The unveiling of Nokia's Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 smartphones lacked "positive surprises, carrier announcements or specific launch dates," noted Jennifer Fritzsche, senior analyst at Wells Fargo, calling the company's event Wednesday a "disappointment."
Ahead of the announcement, Fritzsche was expecting that Nokia (NOK) would announce AT&T (T) as its exclusive launch partner for the Lumia 920 model, and Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile (DT) and AT&T as partners for the 820 model. While Nokia said it expects to start selling its new phones later this year, it didn't provide any additional details or make any unexpected product announcements.

Nokia has take a big chance by partnering with Microsoft (MSFT) to run the Windows platform on its smartphones. Devices that run on Windows account for just 3.5% of the global smartphone market, according to research firm IDC, compared with Google's (GOOG) Android, which accounts for a whopping 68% share, and Apple's 17% share.
Plus, Nokia is just one company that is making phones that will operate with Windows 8. Samsung and HTC are also expected to launch new phones with the Microsoft's latest operating system.
Shares of the Finnish company slid more than 10% in afternoon trading.
Nokia's announcement comes just a week ahead of Apple's (APPL) big event on Sept. 12, at which it is widely expected to introduce the iPhone 5.

As far as the phones are concerned they're brilliant! But it's unfortunate that all their main features were leaked before the event. I don't think nokia could do more. The reason why the stock sank is because the most important information that investors look at is price and release date, both of which could not be told. That has nothing to do with nokia, its microsoft which tells OEMs if they can or cannot give the price/release date of their devices.

Lets face it, no matter what nokia released and what their mobile could do, even if it could walk your dog clean your house and do your job at the same time it would be forgotten in a space of a week when the iPhone 5 comes out. That is the only reason which I can think of as to why microsoft has not released any release date for the wp8.

the only disappointment is the missing price and release date
which can lead to problematic rumors
some news blogs in austria report an early 2013 release and 600Euro price-point. for other major european countries its said to be a mid/end october release...but it could be total bs

i need a new phone as soon as possible - timing matters - i'd buy a grey 920, but if apple is faster i probably won't resist buying my first iphone

As far as the phone is concerned the 920 seems awesome i saw the live release on the internet yesterday and the Phone looks great and very fluid and fast and from a few people who tried it they say the screen is amazing..Regarding the launch of the new Lumia i didn't see any thing to dissapoint...The one negative is it seems it could have been lighter 180g is a bit on heavy side...Some are complaining about memory card but its got 32gb for me that is more then sufficient.

It has a duel core as well as a very good battery
also those who have not used a Lumia or windows Nokia phone must note that the phones don't need as much Ram as the androids ...My current phone is s S3 i hope to try this when it comes to SA.

Hi buddy I really enjoy the galaxy...Honestly the I phone is not even close...you will enjoy the S 3.....

Love it!!! Pop colours, at last. I'm so tired of white and silver products. Let's the 60's reign again!

No kidding.. I've been complaint about this for years. Finally one thing stylish. Something that isn't black hard plastics.

Phone looks really great by the way.

I feel you Bruce. What amaze me is that Apple back in '98 reinvented theirself by using nice candy/trans colours on their computers, but then switch to white, black and silver........ soooooo boring.

Well, Apple went from the pop color thing to spice up their product line and business when Jobs came back (which worked), marketing themselves as a joyous and playful brand. Then, when they wanted to move to a more "mature" phase, capitalizing on their more juvenile approach, and pass off this new "genius phase", they went into a very minimal, monochromatic tone, and it obviously revolutionized the world of modern pop design and aesthetic to a point where everybody copied it in every way (even storied Sony just opened these minimalistic Apple-looking stores, for example), and car designers stated that hot car colors changed to white as the prevalent choice due to Apple, etc.

I do like that Nokia is keen on doing their own thing here and not making Apple clones like everybody else. The colorful products are a nice and necessary addition of variety. I don't like MS's OS though, but I hate about everything Microsoft.... I can smell a Microsoft product or creation from miles away, and to my nostrils, it always stinks. I like the 60's connection you made to the Nokia phones, not sure if that's purposeful by them, but the 60's were the most brilliant period of art and fashion.

Nokia have a great opportunity here if their MS phones take off, but I don't think it's gonna be more than "an alternative product". Nokia and Microsoft are so sloppy with their presentation and production, that they announce products, and then they shelve them until "TBA". Microsoft hasn't launched Windows 8 yet, they did this whole presentation for their new Tablet.... then.... nothing happened.

One of Apple's brilliant business points is a product of Tim Cook's MASTERY of the supply chain.

Try as they might, EVERYBODY is announcing their new phones the weeks before iPhone 5.... bad move.... why? Because nobody will care, you'll just get lost in translation as people gear up for the big show. To please investors, Nokia should have presented their phone a little after iPhone's smoke cleared.

Back to the supply chain issue.... Apple doesn't announce products then shelve them until "further notice". iPhone 5 will be announced on the 12th, and it'll most likely be available no more than the Friday after the following Friday.... in fact, I have a feeling it'll be available just two days later, being THAT Friday.

Absolutely agree. Can't deny the impact the black and white scheme has been for Apple and their products. I just hope that within time bright colours as well as traditional colors are an option for more technological devices. Makes them more organic - although Apple's white is splendid (my iPad is that color). I should mention though, I like customizing my electronics graphically.

Much agreed on the hate towards MS products. They SUCK.
A pitty, b/c I'm a huge fan of Nokia's products, which are extremely realible and nuclear bunker solid.

I understand and agree the importance of the minimalistic white/black/silver scheme, but I don't understand why they stop putting other colours. Specially, b/c silver and white mix very well with strong colours.

Regards!

PS: Apple did not revolutionized the scene, they brought back Braun's ideas ;) :p

I really hope/wish Apple would add another color or two (or more) to the iPad/iPhone design strategy as well. Like you said, they can keep the white/black/silver theme strong while mixing them strategically with stronger colors as well.

I would love to see maybe a nice blue tone, or maybe a dark red or something, in rotation with iPhone 5.

On a good note, I think we'll have a gunmetal aluminum for iPhone 5, which will keep with Apple's "ice cold" and industrial design theme, and should look cool.

Glad they brought in Braun's idea's as well. Somebody had to. :D

Too many junky products, never had a good experience with their software powering my computers, messy business model, messy execution, maybe the worst CEO one could imagine in Steve Balmer (seems better fit to be a Used Car salesman). Still stuck to an old business model, laughs off every segment that Apple innovated into the marketplace only to eat his own words years later when he finally decides to compete halfheartedly, etc. Now they even opened wanabee Apple stores and the stores can't even follow a solid execution, they're just messy and not very classy, not to mention, the ones I've walked by have seemed dead. Again, halfhearted execution.

Microsoft is basically what not to do when a business hits ultra success. Maybe if Gates stayed on board things would have shaped differently for them.

Oh, and aside from all that.... what to hate about Microsoft? One word: ZUNE. :D

.... Now, on the flipside, Microsoft have invested in many companies that have changed the world as we know it, long after Microsoft laid their own claim to do the very same thing.

their software is harder to work with to amateurs compared to apple, yes, but it gives you opportunity to shape it as you like (in a way), its like e60 m5 was vs competitors, many journalists hated it for giving you too many options, but i believe if you own that car, you appreciate that you can adjust things like you wish. Other stuff like bussiness model, exection is irrelevant to me

I'm not a fan of MS, though new MS8 is interesting. My brother has a Nokia N8 with Symbian Belle. So much better than MS Phone or Android. The system works perfectly. I'm thinking of getting the Nokia N9, but it is not on sale in my country, maybe EU. Even the N8 is no more on sale.
