I have been waiting for this camera since it was shown on the Nikon website as a teaser.

I really like it personally, and look forward to possibly purchasing it.

I am in between this model and the Nikon D200

I am thinking of buying a new DSLR -- this is certainly a model that interests me ...but I am even more excited by the fact that Carl Zeiss are now making lenses for Nikon 35mm and Digital SLRs.

Hey, isn't Carl Zeiss the people who make the lenses for the Nokia N Series, too?

yes, zeiss makes lenses for sony too. and optics for medical equipment as well i think.

Zeiss are working with several companies now ...they make beautiful lenses -- the most notable difference is the colour rendition (I have Zeiss lenses for my Hasselblad) ..the only thing is, these new lenses for Nikon SLRs are not AF lenses.

They are expensive Mike, like all German-made lenses ...but Nikons own Nikkor lenses are pretty expensive too ...and they are also excellent quality. But in my experience, the image quality produced by Zeiss is pretty much unsurpassed -- although the Leica lenses are amazing too.

There is much debate on the issue of Japanese vs. German lenses ....it's not that one is better than the other, they are just different.

I have owned a Leica M6 for over a decade, it is a terrific little 35mm camera -- there are many people who criticize the M cameras ...but they tend to be people who have never actually used one before. One thing about the Leica M lenses that is interesting is there is sometimes a very slight (barely discernible) distortion of the image -- this would usually be considered an error and would be corrected by the manufacturer ..but sometimes it does give the image a strangely 3D effect. The thing is, the colour rendition from the Leica lenses is so outstanding, I can easily tell which photographs were taken with the Leica as opposed to my Nikon.

In some ways I miss 35mm camera technology. Someone in another forum was making a joke that 35mm will make a come back since it may not be considered 'electronic' when boarding planes. This is referring to the current issues of boarding airlines across sea's, specifically those going to and from the UK.

Getting back on the topic, I think that two other camera's that are superb right now are the:

Canon 30D

and

Nikon's D200

If there is any camera I could have it would be the Nikon D200, although I am a little worried about the vertical banding that has been caused by soem of the D200's. However, I think Nikon has fixed the problem and it should not be a problem. One thing people are waiting for is to see if the D80 suffers from the same issue, since they are similiar in some aspects.

Great cameras BMWFREAK.

As far as 35mm photography is concerned, it is all but dead -- I wonder who is actually buying the Nikon F6? -- it is a very nice camera but the market for professional 35mm SLRs is virtually non-existent now.

Nikons D2X -- I wouldn't mind one of these even though it is far more than I need .....I guess I'm just excessive sometimes.:D

 D2Xs. Never tried one, but I would really like to see what 8 fps would sound like. :icondrool

I wouldn't mind one of these:

I have read about this "vertical banding" (fine vertical lines on the image) -- if you notice this problem on your images, take the camera back and Nikon will fix the problem for free.

Also notic, that Panasonic Lumix is a really great little camera, it is virtually identical to the more expensive Leica Digilux 2 -- the Leica brand name comes at a high price.

If I was to have a DSLR, the Canon EOS 5D would be nice. 35mm film sized sensor, without the expense of the EOS 1Ds MkII. On the other hand, the EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT is a pretty good value proposition. For some reason I like Canon.

Otherwise, realistically, I'm keen on a successor to the Canon G6. Wide angle would be nice, plus the usual fast lens and swivel screen. A decent sized sensor is also a must. Still, with the way DSLRs are going, will they ever bother to make one?

Roberto, I have tried the Nikon D2X many times. My brother has two, one from work and one that he owns. We have gone to the airport to go spotting many times and all I have to say is that the camera is an incredible piece of machinery. The D2Xs is not that much different from the D2X, however, it does have some upgrades. I usually shoot at 5 fps since I use the highest setting for resolution.

The D200 is simliar in construction and that is why I love the camera. A lot of people pick certain brands for specific reasons. One may pick a brand for the sheer fact that it feels more durable than its competitor. I personally have always loved Nikon growing up. I know that Nikon at times has not been popular, but lately I feel they are making a bigger presence in the entry level photographer scene than ever before.

Like I said, I am going to either purchse a D80 or D200 soon, but I haven't decided yet. I am waiting for more information on the D80 as far as banding and reviews.

The only other camera I would consider would be a Canon 30d.

Does anyone know if professional photographers still use 35mm film cameras or has everyone pretty much gone digital? This is something that I have been wondering for a few days now.

Is your brother a press photographer Mike? ....he sure has great equipment there ...and you get to use it too :icondrool

Well that is what I was referring to earlier about the F6. I don't think very many professionals would be buying the F6 at all -- in fact Nikon only make two 35mm SLRs now! -- I think that says it all ...35mm photography is on it's last legs.

I have also noticed that the F6 does not offer the same kind of interchangeability that the older F cameras offered -- like the interchangeable viewfinders and the large system of accessories that Nikon used to offer for it's professional 35mm system cameras. Nikon obviously expect the biggest market for their top-of-the-line 35mm SLR will no longer be professional photographers.

I doubt there will ever be a Nikon F7 ....I would assume the F6 will be the last model in the F dynasty. I still own my F3, with it's massive motor-drive, it looks so old now but it is still one of my favourite cameras I have ever used -- it was designed in 1980 by Giorgio Giugiaro, the famous Italian car designer (it's so much better-looking than the F6), he also designed the Nikon F4 (launched in 1989).

The Nikon F3 was such a popular model that it continued to be produced alongside the F4 (the model that was supposed to replace it) ...not only that, it continued in production even after the F4 was replaced by the F5 in 1996. The F3 finally ceased production some time around 2001/02.

Nikon F4 (1989-1996) was Nikon's first professional AF camera -- it was also the first camera to have Nikon's Matrix metering system ...but the Auto-focus was so inferior to Canon's ...and so it was around that time Canon's EOS system gained popularity with professionals.

This is rather interesting.

To answer you question about my brother, he works for the local government in the homicide department. Yeah, it is not pretty. He is concentrated more on photographing evidence and anything related to that rather than having an artistic appeal to it. However, I am very lucky to be able to play with the D2X since it is such an incredible camera.

I grew up with Nikon, but I cannot remember at the top of my head what Nikon model my father has. It is still at home and I am considering taking pictures just to post them, but unfortunately the camera doesn't work anymore. It mechanically malfunctioned and at the time Digital was going on its way up while 35mm was going down, so my father did not attempt to repair it. Poor thing. I think it may be an F2, but I am not sure.

:eusa_doh: OMG, reading this thread tempts me with reviving my old (and also expensive) hobby of photography. I am also a Nikon fan. Still have my F2 that I used to do astrophotography with.

Interesting job your brother has Mike.

I have always loved the F2, a friend of mine had one and I would borrow it from time to time .....it really is a great old camera. There is still something special about analog (film) photography that digital does not have, it's hard to say exactly what it is -- I used to love to process my own B/W film and prints ...I had a darkroom when I was in high school, I was really crazy about photography back then. It is an expensive hobby Olli, you are right ...but that's where digital photography really wins out, it is so much cheaper than film.

I would imagine that medium-format photography is also now under threat from the digital revolution -- but most medium-format cameras are compatible with digital technology now anyway.

But I still have a secret fantasy of owning one of these one day, A Linhof Kardan Master GTL (large-format camera)

..more precisely, it would be this model.

This camera takes sheets of film measuring 18x24cm (8x10") -- you wouldn't even need to enlarge the images, just contact-print them -- this offers unbelievable image quality.

Roberto,

To be honest I agree with you. There is something about 35mm film that digital just doesn't have. I too would develop my own black and white film at school in a photography class. There is an artistic appeal about it. I guess the only way I can relate to it is like cooking. Some people view cooking as an art and putting the ingredients together is only part of it. Once the final dish is done, then you truly see what you have created. The same goes for photography, especially the classic way of black and white development.

What is contact printing Roberto?

F-A.net has alot of very good photografers and pretty much all of them have recommened the D70 so I guess this must be even better:usa7uh:

I'm quite new to photgraphy but will definatly make it a hobby. What stops me from making a hobby right now is of course money. After this summer I will change school and at that school you can take a 3 year photography class. My brother took the same class and his pictures after it really match most of the top photgrafer's pictures on F-A so I'm definatly taking it.

There are very few things that are nicer than some really beautiful pictures of cars. All I want is to take beautiful nice of cars. Like for example Drew Philips:bowdown:
