I guess so (I'm not 100 % sure but I think Goplen is still working at DWUSA, he was last year at least). But it wouldn't be anything new as the first generation X3 was also a DW project as well as eg. first generation X5 and first gen. Z4.

X3 was done in DesignWorks California , the interior was done in Munich.
The reason why the evolutionary appearence was chosen is because customers like the taut , tough styling of the E83 X3.

E83 X3 had brought customers to the BMW Brand for the first time it was also a vehicle that spread out the BMW brand as a new Lifestyle orientated segment which in turn brought a large majority of new customers to the BMW brand. A feat the recently launched X1 has now repeated.

Typically it is recognisable as an X3 , but it is underneath the surface where you will see and experience the changes, The whole second generation has come about by "reverse engineering" the E83 , we knew what the consumer liked and what they didn't like so they set about refining the plus'es whilst reworking and refining the minus'es.

Overall when you get to see the whole X line up altogether as you will soon, you will see how each demonstrate their own character , differ in dimensions and offer a choice for whatever your requirements need be.

^ Does that mean, for example that the new X3 will ride better than its predecessor? Also, what of a moderate enhancement in off-road ability? Any chance of a full size spare wheel? Daft questions to some here but for me very important because next gen X3 is high on my list for the next family car.

Daft question-not.
I think it is rather ridiculous that vehicles with such price points do not have a full size spare or worse no space to stow away a full size spare.
Believe it or not it is one of the reasons why I chose the X6 over the M3: the lack of space for a spare tyre.

But the M3 has space for a spare tyre. The reason it doesn't have a spare supplied as standard is to save weight.

And if the deal breaker for not buying an M3 is the lack of a spare tyre then I think you've done yourself a favour by buying the X6.

Yeah, I know but it's a lame tease.

This pic could very well have been a teaser for the new Daewoo Matiz, since there's absolutely nothing that connects this road with BMW, let alone the new X3 ;)
It's no biggie though, I can wait a few more days now.

LOL, you've posted that one before I believe. But yeah, much better.

I think all things offroad will be present to an even lesser extent thant in the previous generation X3. Why? I would guess the core buyers are not interested in anything but the elevated driving position and the image. In that perspective, things like a proper 4WD system will be hard to justify. Spare? No, RFT:s are just as good, if you ask BMW.
