No diesel for USA 1er Coupe/Cabrio . It is nothing to do with state compliance, More image and economics in which it would not be advisable to import the car to the USA. It is an engine the car is more focusing on but is petrol powered not diesel powered.

Well 2K, there's your answer. Just to throw a wrench into the works, and continue the speculation (even tho it looks like Scott has settled the matter),
how 'bout an e88 platform and rubber-suit to disguise testing for this...

BMW Z2
Actually, it could be going both ways, ie, Scott is right...a new engine being tested (and my speculation) in a very disguised Z2. :D
Just kidding but it's fun to think about and maybe provoke someone to add to the scant info we have on a Z2 or if it's even in the pipe anymore.

Re: New 1er spy pic

Hey Scott, do you know yet if its an ''all new motor'' or did BMW possibly crank the boost on an already perfect motor? Its a bit interesting that they were in a conv and not a coupe. Its pretty confusing.

Brookside, your nuts!! That would be some pretty heavy camou.

2lt turbo?? :eusa_thin

FYI...some people just can't wait for a motor like this from BMW  (including myself).

Haha Mr. B...no, they don't put the body on...too early for that...it's what's under the skin! BMW has tested new models with the "wrong" body a couple times in the earliest phases of testing.
Anyway- just speculation on my part.

Re: New 1er spy pic

I just sold the 135i. Turbo is not my thing. There is always throttle lag. I rather drive my 130i than the 135i. 130i has less power then the 135i but the engine of 130i sings on high revs. I really miss that on turbo engine. 130i lacks grunt on low revs. But with a better throttle response i easily forget that.

I really think you should go for an engine swap... put the S54 in that cute little bay ;-)

So there was noticeable lag, was your 135i tuned?

Re: New 1er spy pic

Today turbo lag is inevitable on a turbo engine, the 35i is great in this respect but the technique is not yet completely lag-free... so if you are a N/A purist there is simply no turbo alternative that will do.

I guess if BMW decided to put the updated 3 liter engine with 272 hp in the coupe... and cut out the rear seat.... E46 CSL type seats... Oh, well, one may dream....

But I wonder why they don't use the 272 hp inline six in the 1-series.

Re: New 1er spy pic

^ In the 1-series coupé you mean?

What BMW needs is a high revving NA I6 alu/magnesium M powerhouse. There is a huge empty void now since the new M3 has a V8 and there is no M model for the 1er.

I agree. They need a high revving I6. Give us a modern version of the E46 M3's motor. Have it crank out 350hp and rev to the high heavens!!

Re: New 1er spy pic

Hi-rev NA engines are dead! That's a cruel fact.
In a few years petrol turbos will completely dominate the field. Diesels are already turbocharged.

Only some super-sporty brands will still offer high-rev engines - but even that's not sure: perhaps only in combination with KERS or hybrid system.

Exhaust gas emissions regulation is the reason.

Want a hi-rev I6? Buy E46 M3.

From what I have heard, that is the way Ferrari is planning to go - just like BMW M.

Yes, in the 1-series coupé. I guess that is the closest thing we are going to get to what we are looking for...

Today there is the not so inspiring 25i engine (which I like less than the 20i) and the 35i in the 1-series coupé. I think the 30i with 272 hp would have filled that gap rather well.

I dont quite buy that. Wouldnt a modern version of the E46 M3 engine be lower in gas emissions that the E92 and V10 M's?

Please keep in mind that this is marketing speaking. Marketing tells you what management tells them to.

The only real reason why we will not get real enthusiast spec engines is that it cost too much... of course they are able to build them but they do not care enough about the purist enthusiasts to build them. The gain (or should i say loss) in £, $ and € simply does not justify it...

Re: New 1er spy pic

No more Turbo s for me.

High rev engines are so much more sheer driving fun.

I would buy a turbo but only diesel for driving daily.

For getting youre hair on fire an high atmo please. That s awesome.

give me 130i over an 135i turbo anyday. If turbo s is the only choice at bmw i only buy second hand.
