X1 Next BMW X1 to go front-drive

The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by BMW since 2009. A subcompact luxury crossover class, the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman.
Now, I agree. Why buy a BMW over a VW? For badge only.

Ha! Indeed and mind you 1st: Many traditional BMW enthusiasts/owners will ask themselves the same question (like myself who - for the first time since my first car a Golf - moving up behind the wheel of BMW's and now thinking more and more about VAG's great lineup - especially the new Golf:love:)
2nd: With cars like the new M-B A-class who's perceived and tactile is below Golf standards and BMW's FWD forward thinking, it's Herr Winterkorn who's going to have the last laugh - hence my AVATAR!:sneaky:

See, the current world-economic 'situation' is unfortunately going to get worse before it gets better and VAG's (NON-premium lineup) WILL look + feel more premium and be much more affordable than BMW's or Benz's rival offerings.;) Which means that Premiums status could be lost for some Famous German brands. And last but not least: BMW's Brand i is doomed even before it began.

Sh!t, I am starting to sound like Auto Mundial's Richard Nichols - negative, negative, negative....well BMW pathed and paved the way for such comments, I feel sick:wtf:

Premium brands want so much money that they are becoming less premium, and less premium means they will have a weaker marketing argument so tougher competition as they enlargen their targeted customer group. Now, Porsche also feel less exotic, and I think they'll just end up being premium. Only Ferrari till now is able to stay faithfull to its roots, even with the FF, which in fact is has even more Ferrari DNA than the California.

Now, I agree. Why buy a BMW over a VW? For badge only.

The sum of it's parts will always be better....but on paper some models will look much alike, technically.

Seriously, I am glad you said it yourself, that's a very pessimistic outlook when you have so many variables and so many opportunities...

Hhe, that's an aweful long time buddy....hope we're still around by then :)

Haha, so true, but time passes so rapidly. I can't believe the 7 Series F01 already got facelift, and new M3 is just around the corner.

X7 is not coming. Not with this mess the economy is in. Scott didn't get the memo yet.

I did. But there is another memo. One that luxury car manufacturers are facing up to in the luxury end of the market and that is the decline of the luxury sedan and Coupe in the face of the rising luxury SUV and four door Coupe.
As far as I know at the current time it is all systems go for the X7 for post conception of course this is the auto industry and of course things change so what applies today might not tomorrow but all options are investigated.
The proposal for the X7 is to provide declining luxury sedans with market sustainability. A decision on the X7 and a further four door Coupe above the 7er (based on the 7er) will be taken in early 2013 depending on economic situations.

But the luxury SUV class is purely aimed at emerging markets and in particularly the worlds largest luxury car market China.
That is why models like the Range Rover have moved seriously upmarket and having sat in one in Paris the detailing is very much on par with a Rolls-Royce.
Bentley and Lamborghini's SUV Concepts are further evidence , but VW not wishing to be left out and be the best at everything will take both to production, industry sources show that is inevitable.

The X7 is planned to be developed with the next-gen architecture and aluminium/CFRP mix for the platform and structure. With drivetrain and suspension taken from the upcoming X5/X6 replacements. The X7 could also potentially be offered exclusively with RWD as well as xDrive. This drives down costs as it is shared via a whole range of models and is modular. The next gen architecture can be seen in development mules of the F01 and extended F15's which are undergoing internal development.

One decision which is final is that they voted for the BMW X7 over the Rolls-Royce branded SAV.

Regarding BMWi doomed to failure?
I disagree. If we look at the BMW i8 Purely because Mercedes-Benz and Audi are giving you the option amongst equivalent petrol powered models. Which 9 times out of 10 is what the customer will go for.

The BMW i8 is one model no equivalent V8 just one model. I agree it is more of a risk but the BMWi cars are all about putting the BMW stamp on a blueprint for the future of mobility.
Design , technology , dynamics and cutting edge image which oozes desirability is what will be driving the i8 once it is launched in 2014.

Someone had to be first to bring a stand alone model with no alternative to the market amongst the European premium market. It is a risk but the development is something that will benefit the next generation of BMW's.
And after having witnessed the sheer acceleration of the i8 it will be something special but it will be the customer to decide whether they want to embrace a new direction in mobility with this progressive sports car.

The i3 again is not a conventional model with a selection of petrol and diesel options.
Everything about the i3 is unique and there is nothing quite like it.
The i3 is individuality with desirability it is aimed at people who live in metropolitan areas who have to use their car for getting to work or social commitments.
For both the i cars we are looking at infrastructure which will be available by the arrival of the cars onto the market including specific parking and charging stations across the globe.
BMWi is not just about cars it is about the entire philosophy of sustainability.

And last but not least: BMW's Brand i is doomed even before it began.

Sh!t, I am starting to sound like Auto Mundial's Richard Nichols - negative, negative, negative....well BMW pathed and paved the way for such comments, I feel sick:wtf:

I am still trying to understand the logic behind the "i" brand even if the economic dynamics were buoyant especially when you consider how much they might want to price those things.

I am glad to hear that, because if MB is selling GL by the numbers that they are selling, then BMW have no excuse not to build a competitor.
I hope BMW have fired the Product/Business Analyst that told them there was no business case for the CS.

I've griped a lot about how BMW is water down it's brand image, and how I hate the direction they're taking, and how they're the next GM, so I won't say anything about that. What I will say is that a FWD BMW is just a shame. It's sad to see a brand that focused on the driver let go of what they were so good at.

You have to be careful because they drill on vacuumed plastic and mesh covers to disguise design elements as is the case here because the car is not running full electrics , hence the temporary driving lights. This car is actually wearing a false nose cone but the bonnet opening with kidney grille outline is correct.

new X1 vs. X5 silhouette..

It's great to see that the new X1 is becoming more SUV while in the other hand, it's so sad that its famous big brother, the X5, has became more a Van-SUV. I think we have to wait until the next generation X5 to bring it back to its SUV roots & leave that old boxy design from E70.
