Viper New Viper guarantees Blue Devil's arrival

The Dodge Viper is a sports car that was manufactured by Dodge (by SRT for 2013 and 2014), a division of American car manufacturer Chrysler from 1992 until 2017, having taken a brief hiatus in 2007 and from 2011 to 2012.

When word of a 600-hp Dodge Viper first crossed our desks, we immediately figured that the on-again, off-again super Corvette "Blue Devil" project would immediately get a green light for production. The current Z06 produces a stout 505 hp, about 5 hp shy of the current Viper's 8.3-liter V10. We knew, however, that General Motors would never let a 95-hp deficit stand. Thus, it's not much of a surprise that the Detroit Free Press is reporting none other than Bob Lutz has indicated that Blue Devil/SS/Stingray/whatever is definitely a go. Lutz's exact words were, "the Corvette vehicle line executive will not take that lying down." His comments were made at a meeting yesterday with analysts, at which he also stated, "It is very important for Corvette to be the most powerful, most capable, best handling sports car in the United States." Them sounds like fightin' words to us. Rumors about the Blue Devil peg its power at well above the 600-hp mark, which means not long after the 2008 Viper's steam-rolling rear tires hit the street, a new top-dog will arrive sometime in 2009.

That's exactly why when I learned that there would be no "Diamondback" Viper with 650 hp to take on the Blue Devil, only a standard Viper with 600 hp, I cancelled my order and got my deposit back from Dodge.

The Blue Devil/Stingray got a green light from the Corvette boss Tom Wallace a few months back. It will probably be available in 2008/09.

EDIT; Got a message from a friend in the US who have contacts at the Corvette plant. According to this message the production of the SC Corvette a.k.a Blue Devil will start during summer this year!! Time will tell if this information is correct. I keep my fingers crossed!!

Lutz Says Corvette SS Project Safe, in Final Tuning Stage

Apparently GM's "pause button" on gas-swilling, rear-drive pavement ionizers doesn't include the "Blue Devil" Corvette SS (or whatever). Vice-grip chair, Bob Lutz says that project was too late to stop. As you'll recall, an EPA proposal to increase CAFE fuel economy requirements, Lutz said earlier this week, caused GM to press the big, red stop button on its plans for cars to be built on its new global rear-drive platform. Those would be the Pontiac G8, next-gen Chevy Impala and ultra-luxe Cadillac. Lutz had said the new Camaro, which is built on the same platform, was also too late to stop. As far as the new 'Vette's engine is concerned, Lutz would only say it will be "comfortably in excess of 600 ." That's horsepower. What a little devil. – Mike Spinelli
