It isn't unusual for a car to be seen out in public this close to its public debut. My guess is that a lot of MB execs, reps etc. have one at this point if for no other reason than to work out any kinks. Then at some point the car mags have to get one for those roadtest we'll be reading about in their Feb, March issues. The car is now what about 6-8 weeks away from being on sale?

I drove the S500 L today.. and god damn i was impressed like hell.. the interior quality is like 100 years ahead of my W220.. and the damn thing is fast as hell.. the steering is sportyish.. amazing.. and the ride is so quiet and comfy.. and the multicontour seats are a must option.. they feel so good that you want to twist and turn all the time:D

All in all i have decided that the W221 will be my next car no doubt.. :D

After finding these technical specs on the W221, I don't understand why they decided to keep the S500 badge for some markets... Following Mercedes-Benz suggested rules, the three numbers indicate engine size.
The correct nomenclature is then S550 (5461cc).

Sorry if it's a repost.

There is no rule.. if there was they had to change the 65 AMG´s to 60 amg´s.. and the S600 to S550 and so on..

So there is no rule..

I think you are right about not being a rule, but I clearly remember reading about it from Mercedes back in the late 90s when they explained the world about the new classification of their vehicles into 'classes' and moved the letters in front of the numbers.
The classification suggested to follow a 'class' and 'engine displacement' with the new AMGs dropping a number to give a closer definition to liters, as in 55=5.5 liters, etc. and to stand separate from the rest.
Of course nothing is ever written in stone so MB marketing may have bent this logical system on occations in order to follow a trendy or 'favorable' number that is more popular and/or well established in people's minds...
After all, they are just numbers and numbers cannot be trademarked or registered so they can literally use whatever they want. ;)

No they cant.. they cant for example use S60 AMG.. cause Volvo has S60 :D

The thing is that some names are legendary.. like the 500.. and i hate the fact that its gonna be called the 550 in da us.. it should be 500 like in the rest of the world..

Thank you The Artist, very good points! :usa7uh:

It's true, the S60 may cause legal problems. Companies connot trademark numbers but they can trademark combination of letters and numbers....

I agree about the 500 being a legendary badge. If they keep upgrading the engines and not the badges maybe they'll go back to the old classifications like the 1969 280SE 3.5 or the legendary 1970s 450SEL 6.9..

Thanks for the picture Tyccon but damn. MB is really killing the S-class with their small and non-fabolous looking rims.
