How did they go about compiling a table of competing brands against the W221 and the W220? How could they test 'driving dynamics' when everyone drives differently, or 'safety' when there's no tangible standard to work on?

Yea, the brochure is kinda old. I think it was posted in the old GCF forums.
You can also tell it’s not the US version ‘cause the S500 is renamed the S550 and we won’t get the S350. Oh and of course the new generation Smart Key, we get a “Panic” button while the rest of the world doesn’t.

Yea the comparison shows how far the W220 was behind the competition. Even in safety, that’s what MB’s are all about.

Man that new key is nice! Just makes you want hold it your hand.

Well it is of course based on their own evaluation of compeititors cars. Not even Mercedes could deny that Audis are supremely constructed, hence they placed the A8 slightly better than the W220, which still isn't the whole truth. Mercedes knows the A8 embarrases the W220 in build quality, but they'd never admit it. Now you see they returned to their old self, look at where they put the W221 on those scales..........way to the right. It ain't that much better! Mercedes obviously thinks nothing of Jaguar. Kinda like when BMW said Jaguar was nuts to offer an I6 with a displacement of 4L. BmW said that past 3.7-8L an I6 is too rough. Ouch. Gotta love that German we-know-everything arrogance.

What does panic button do? Give a nitro boost for Autobahn races against speed monsters?

Re: New S Class W221 Pics and Info *Continued thread 2*

yeah, what does the panic button do?

Re: New S Class W221 Pics and Info *Continued thread 2*

The panic button on the Smartket just activates the alarm/horns in case you need help and need to get someone's attention.

Ermhhh.........why not just use your cellphone and call 911 instead of waking up an entire city. :t-crazy2:

lol.. thats true..
volvos have this feature to.. i dont think its main reason is to drag attention during emergency.. it is pretty usefull if you parked your car in a parking house..with many similar cars..you can press it and the car flashes and sounds so that you can find it easier...
Still not a gr8 feature though..

Well its really for use in a situation in which you're being attacked or something and using a phone isn't an option. Like in a airport parking lot late at night or in a concrete parking structure with poor cell phone reception. You want to draw as much attention to the situation as possible in those instances.

I think its a great feature, one that you'll hopefully never have to use. Using it to find your car is pretty much abuse though.

And I believe TelAid calls you to make sure you're ok if you don't deactivate it.

I was wondering about that, but no the panic button on the smartkey won't call for help like telaid does. Telaid calls when a airbag goes off or a severe collision has been detected. People use that panic button all the time on their remotes to find their cars like the previous poster stated so they couldn't link that to telaid, otherwise the call center would be swamped.

Like all MB's I am sure it will for the US.

Re: New S Class W221 Pics and Info *Continued thread 2*

Well I saw my first 221 today (Silver on Black) and I liked what I saw. The fender flares are not that obtrusive and did not overpower the lines like in the pictures. Also the rear trunk lid and rear flares looked fine...seemed to blend nicely and relieved my concerns from viewing the images I had seen.

Interior was black which is a turnoff for me...but getting over that it looked pretty nice. Strangely the interior seemed smaller than my S430? Maybe it was the black color and seating positions. Not much time to see all but I will call and ask for a test ride someday soon.

Overall a pretty powerful looking machine...more a sport like sedan than the stately S Class we are used to. I still like my 220 but probably will get into a 221 in a year or two...all those technical goodies are too much to pass up :D

Yeah...a very nice car but several more looks will be necessary before I would commit to one. I like the "stately look" in an S Class and this car may be more sport sedan oriented and not stand apart from the other cars coming in it's class. Just yesterday I set up the install in the 430 of the Hands Free system with voice control...so another $2K+ will keep me in this one for a while..:D

True, I might have confused it with the alarm that goes off when you're car is towed. There's a button in the interior that has a car and hook on (can't remember the name of the feature), when you turn it on and if the car gets towed or jacked, the alarm will go off and that's when TelAid calls if you don't turn it off after a minute or so. I remember reading this in our M-Class manual.

There's a sliver one at MB of Manhattan Alex. The one at 55th and Park Avenue. Go check it out when you get a chance.

Another S500 review:

The new S500, unquestionably the best car in the class, and arguably the most complete road car in history, is the perfect riposte to the bleak news that has hounded Daimler Chrysler throughout 2005. Forget pension deficits, healthcare burdens and errant CEOs names after small crustacia, this is Mercedes showing us what it does best. Building big saloon cars to a standard that will leave rival manufacturers contemplating whether they shall ever catch-up. They have been trying –and consistently failing- for thirty years now.

To look at, let alone purchase any other car in this sector would be lunacy. Talking of which, the outcome of next week’s group test is a closely guarded secret.

S500 Review

Wow! They really feel strongly about this car!
