M5 New BMW M5 in 2011 to get 550bhp

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
^ Interesting...I wonder what the experts have to say about this...mainly S'PIMP  He knows the M division.

a littl bit rumors nd a littl bit daydreams mixing with a few words of Reithofers speech and whats out ? " Automotive News " inside report :usa7uh:

wonder, why its not " The News of the World " (hehehe)

all 3 of the german manufacturers have said that they want to concentrate in lowering weight than continually increasing power so 550hp sounds ok to me.

V8 twin turbo?, What about the next generation V10 with + 600 hp Scott talked about a wile ago?.

That will be much better.

It's waaaaayyyyyy to early to start throwing out numbers for the next M5. There needs to be a GCF "vaporware" section for these kinds of threads.

Anybody can toss out a number that's 15 to 25% more powerful than the current M5 and they'll probably be in the ballpark. Big whoop.

Why do you need 600 hp in a sedan?! That's just pointless and non efficient. It seems like the talk about decreasing hp (or not going for more) is just going to stay on words.

I was wondering what can we expect about the new M5 when we read some of the latest new about the M department, as cancelling M3 CSL and that things... Maybe we don´t see a gret power increasment this time and only see the new V8 TT having 536hp, or something like that
.

With the way BMW is going who knows. They might come up a Hybrid M engine that runs on urea???
I will wait until they give us the official word.

That´s my principal concerning about the car, BMW should be cautelous with AMG and therir new E 63 AMG, the latest AMGs are doing very well.

I think thats a big no no!!

Has the M-division ever modified a "normal" BMW engine for the M cars?

Having in mind BMW politic nowadays, I wouldn´t expect anything bigger than a V8 TT with 530+ hp, honestly.

I agree!
I was about to point that out as well but I honestly don`t think it will come of the BMW line. It will be an M-engine with all the outstanding hardwear. AMG is already talking about downsizing so there is no question M will do the same.

If thay do its going to make the new M5 a lighter car.. It better behave better than the CTS-V though.

I wouldn´t say downsizing, but changing their views (at least BMW). What they are going to do is having a very slight increase of the hp, but with 8 cylindres instead of 10, and adding twin turbos, making the car more fuel efficient and more eco-friendly.

AMG won´t do that till 2012 or so I think, talking about E-Class of course.

Maybe current M5 is going to be the last real M. High reeving engines are more unique and more fun. Now its just going to be one of those ordinary sportscars. I'm trully going to miss the highreeving concept. :(

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
