M5 New BMW M5 in 2011 to get 550bhp

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
An increase of 5.5liters, Direct Injection technology, + Twin-Turbos..
with only a 50hp increase?

It should be nothing under 80hp with those advancements.

I just think it is far to early to speculate on hp for the next M5. Right now though 550hp does sound a little tame, but I don't expect the next E63 to have more than 550hp either. Then again who knows.

Yep I agree, one thing that concerns me is the weight factor of the next M5
with these improvements. More than likely the car will be heavier.

Than again it`s way too earily for predictions like you say..

And now we are talking about fuel economy in one of these exotic sports cars..
but yea, if the weight goes down, even the current spec of the V10 will do the job, but if the weight goes down, i would guess they probably need to reduce the weight of the V10 as well, i doubt the engine can be pushed back any further to achieve their 50:50 distribution. And to get 550horses, they dont' even need a 5L engine to do it with turbos and other new techs right?
Wonder if there will ever be diesel M models, REAL efficient dynamics... let's do 8L/100km fuel consumption with 500hp and 800Nm! :D

But it is too early, it won't hit showrooms until sth like early 2012.

These predictions can be made now, it's not too early for that. F10 will focus much more on weightsaving techniques than they did when developing E60. The new M5 will: 1) be lighter than current model 2) be more efficient/fuel saving 3) have more hp than the current one

Scott said in another thread that the next version of the V10 will have 625 hp.....but we don't know for what car that will be of course (or if it's true)

strange is'nt it?? about a decade ago if someone were to mention ///M and turbo charging in the same sentence it would be considered a taboo yet here we are speculating the next generation M5's aspiration. From the current success of the N54 and future potential of the N64, I have braced myself for TT offering from ///M. Looking forward to it.

Oh yeah, one of the biggest complaints with the current gen M5 has been fuel tank capacity. Most owners have complained about refuelling after very short intervals. Hopefully the next gen will be more economical and sport a bigger fuel tank.

Not that strange if you look at what rock age technology was used in turbo configurations 10-15 years ago... had there been todays and maybe tomorrows know-how back then M GmbH would have gone that way from the start...

lOl, thanks for the responce klier

You believe that man.. I mean come on. BMW has never been that power hungry in the past. 600 plus hp is pretty extreme when thay just broke the 500 mark with the current model.

On top of that with the addition of a bigger displacement, turbo chargers and other toys the car should be a bit heavier. If it`s going to be lighter the M boys have some work to do.

There was an 100+ Hp jump from the previous M5 to the present one, so I won't be surprised if the next one makes 600+ HP. But in the end it will be competition that will determine how much the next M5 makes. RS6 already makes 580 HP (more out of necessity I believe) but if the next AMG E responds with 600HP, I doubt BMW will hesitate in putting it's 600 HP foot forward. All pretty silly though imo. For the first time, I am actually turned off by these HP numbers.

I'd go for both and really knock the competition on their arse. That is what I expect BMW to do.

A lighterweight M5 with 600hp would force Audi to come up with a 700hp just to keep up, unless Audi focuses on their weight problem. Mercedes-Benz too.

Not only was the jump from 400 to 500 in the M5's, the M3's new engine is lighter than the old straight six. So they have shown that it's possible to accomplish all these targets.

Also, if the only thing they do is bore out the engine, it's not going to add weight since the block is still essentially the same. I doubt this is all they are going to do though.

M GmbH outlined weight reduction as their priority with the upcoming models. So I'd expect the M5 to be more focused on low weight rather than insane power output.

Agree. This would simply lower the weight ratio which should be the focus of the German super sedans. At some point the this hp war in Germany will soften. I really can`t see them breaking the 600hp mark with the next generation. Thats just my personl opinion. Efficiency should be the focus.

Lets see who gets there first.

That's only if the block can handle being bored out.

Agreed. However, Dinan already have a stroke kit that you can buy for your M5/6 albeit at a ridiculous price of $40k. It increases the capacity from 5.0 to 5.7 liters to get 628hp. If they can do that, then BMW can do something along that line with a 5.5 liter to get 550 hp.

However, that's just not going to fly I don't think. The engine will need more technology when the new M5 comes out.

Are you kidding me? $40k? Thats like nothing! No one would have said anything about that type of tuning costing €25k... cheap as hell! Im guessing the same kit would have been something like €50k ($80k) here.

Report: New BMW M5 to drop V10 in favor of turbo V8

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has revealed in the past that future BMW powertrains will be downsizedin an effort to improve fuel-efficiency and reduce emissions, and that even the hallowed ‘M’ division could also be affected by the new wave of environmental consciousness sweeping the carmaker. BMW has always stood by the high-rev philosophy for delivering power from its M engines but that may be about to change.

Inside sources have revealed that the next-generation M5, due in 2011, will be powered by a high-performance twin-turbo V8 engine instead of a naturally aspirated V10. The source also revealed that initial tests of variations of the 400hp (298kW) turbocharged 4.4L V8 found in the X6 crossover is showing promising results, reports Automotive News.
Additionally, BMW’s M engineers are also finding good results from the award-winning 3.0L straight-six turbo. It comes “very close to a large-displacement, naturally aspirated engine,” the source told reporters.
Prototypes of the current M5 have been seen sporting front-mount intercoolers and additional air-intakes, confirming that a high-performance turbocharged powertrain is being developed. And, while purists may scoff at the idea of a turbocharged M car, the decision by rivals to launch forced-induction competitors such as the new twin-turbo RS6 and upcoming SL Black-Series, which is expected to get a twin-turbo V12, may leave BMW with little choice.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
