CVT's do not have gears per se.
but they can be programmed to lock on to any number of ratios, or virtyual gears

The gearbox is still in testing. General development is done, now BMW engineers are tweaking the gearbox to fit BMW driving dynamics. I will come sooner than you think.

335si will definitely get it. Latest info is the car will debut after M3, not before it. Also due longer-than-planned DCT tests.

And yes, F01/02 7er will debut a new automatic transmission. But will it really have 8 gears? Khmmmm Do you realy think 8 is a right number?

No, I think 7 is more like it because it really doesn't make sense to have more than 7 foward gears in a modern car's automatic transmission.

Btw, ZF chief confirmed in a recent interview for AMS ZF has developed a new 8-speed automatic gearbox - reducing fuel consumption up to 6%, and CO2 emissions by more than 10%.

Mind that current 6-speed auto featured in E65 7er is developed by ZF, and it debuted in BMW E65 7er in 2001.

Guess what gearbox F01 7er will feature.

well if the elctronics are smart enough to shift at the needed time, and to choose the exactly needed gear, the top 2 gears will be meaningless
it's a abttle of electronics, you can ahve 4 gears with idiotic electronics, and find yourself in 4th only 1% of the time, and an 8 gear box with samrt head that will use the full spectrum exactly when needed

- Change from gear 8 to gear 2 without going through 6,5 and 4 gear like other existing 6-gears automatics does today.

I would assume that we don't see manual gearboxes with more than 6 speeds because I would imagine that it would be kind of tedious to really drive it and have to change all of those gears. The reason I'm thinking about this is because I know that in the MB 7speeder if you mash your foot to the floor it will skip as much as like 3 gears. Kind of crazy. I dunno much about trannys though so I don't know if what I'm talking about really makes any sense!

Yeh, that is the main reason I think. I was too lazy to look for more info on manual trannys with more than 6 gears with a search engine so here's a quote from Wikipedia:

Contemporary automotive manual transmissions are generally available with four to six forward gears and one reverse gear, although manual transmissions have been built with as few as two and as many as eight gears. Semi tractors have at least 13 gears and as many as 24.

You say that, but my push bike has 24 gears, sure I use mainly top gear, but still!

Interestingly MB make a push bike with an automatic gearbox, I can't imagine what that would be like to use!
